You can type in the hostname or IP address. For an Apple TV on Mac OS X, the hostname is obtained from the Apple TV’s name (found in Settings > General > Name) by replacing spaces by hyphens and appending ".local."

So "Apple TV" would be entered as "apple-tv.local" and "Bedroom Apple TV" would be entered as "bedroom-apple-tv.local"

Great, thanks.

I keep getting an HDCP error on my Apple TV when trying to do this about the HDMI cable. I got the cable from Apple I think so that may be why.

ClickToFlash's AirPlay feature has been working great for me. After the recent update that allowed it to work again (sidestepping Apple's iOS 5 bug) in all versions of AppleTV, I updated my AppleTV to 5.0.1 and I am still enjoying AirPlay from Safari in MacOS. Now I've got the newest AppleTV features, and still get to send video to it from Safari by way of ClickToFlash.

Recently Vimeo changed their website though -- replacing all Flash with HTML5 -- and since there's no Flash displayed anymore, the ClickToFlash extension has nothing to work with. So ClickToFlash's options for "Send via AirPlay" no longer appear. Still works great with YouTube and so many other video sites out there, though.

And then, today, I came across a totally new app called HUDTube, that allows easy interactivity with YouTube and Vimeo (as well as local) videos, including the ability to send them via AirPlay to an AppleTV. And there's even a browser extension that makes it all very easy. HUDTube is $6.99 in the Mac App Store, and I'm liking it a lot. If you're interested in sending video playback from your computer directly to the AppleTV, so you can keep multitasking while the video plays... check it out!

I just learned that the same developer's extension "Media Center" allows you to AirPlay or download Vimeo videos (under the new site design) via the context menu, just like CTF used to. Works wonderfully!

Cool. Is Media Center sufficient to be able to Airplay HTML5 video from sites like youtube and vimeo?

Vimeo, yes. I mentioned this just above.

YouTube, it should, but I am not sure. You'd have to be in YouTube's HTML5 trial
http://www.youtube.com/html5
...and give it a shot.

As it stands I prefer the HTML5 UI provided by ClickToFlash over YouTube's own HTML5 UI offered via their trial, *and* it offers the extra download and AirPlay options/functionality, so I'm sticking with this combo.

I have both ClickToFlash and MediaCenter installed. They work together brilliantly (Media Center includes a "stop playback" button that's useful for both) and they make my browsing experience better overall. I see no reason why not to install both. ESPECIALLY if you have an AppleTV!

Thanks for posting this solution.

I was able to install plugins and it works like a charm on most of the website including youtube. However it does not show the airplay option on one of the website that website has flash video, do I need to do any other setup to make it
work?

It only works on sites that have HTML5 video available, and ClickToFlash is able to identify/work with it.

Here's one thing I find (sometimes) works (on some websites.)

-Install "Media Center" extension (from the same ClickToFlash developer
-In Safari, go to Preferences -> Advanced -> Show Develop menu in menu bar
-When you get to a "Flash only" site, go to the new Develop menu and change the "User Agent" to "Safari iOS 5.1 – iPad"
-Refresh the page

SOMETIMES the page will then give you an HTML5 version instead (if that page has a mobile/iOS version being offered) and then the Media Center extension will give you the AirPlay option too, just like CTF would.

Again, this only works if the web page has an HTML5 version for mobile devices. Many obviously don't. But some do.

Hope this helps! Enjoy!

Thanks,

Thanks, I followed your instruction, however when I try to change "User Agent" to "Safari iOS 5.1 – iPad" I dont see this option I see "Safari iOS 4.3.3 – iPad" option.
Even after doing that I cannot see airplay. The video I am trying airplay is from website www.biggbosskannada.com.

What version of Safari are you running? I am running 6.0.4. Seems like you have an older version, so your available User Agents are old, too.

Regardless, it won't matter for biggbosskannada.com though because I just checked and they only offer Flash, no HTML5.

You can still mirror that content to your AppleTV though, either with Mountain Lion's AirPlay Mirroring feature (if your Mac is new enough to support it) or with AirParrot.

problem with airplay with osx is it mirrors the whole computer I dont want that we want just Safari or just the video (youtube, netflix, hulu ext...) via computer

...which is precisely what the ClickToFlash extension takes care of, which is precisely why I started this thread. It lets you AirPlay just the video, not merely mirror the whole screen.

Did you even read the first post?

yeah in my previous post i said that ClickToFlash doesn't work to well either no pausing or forwarding or rewinding.

Sure there is, you just use the AppleTV's original remote, once the video's URL has been flung.

Considering there's no other Mac/Safari desktop-based alternative for this, and considering it's free... I'd say it works great. (Considering Mountain Lion's full-screen mirroring doesn't offer remote control for pausing, forwarding or rewinding at all... and monopolizes both screens... I'd say this is a better approach for videos/sites that work with it.)

Not to mention, my AppleTV's are jailbroken, so I have AirControl installed, which does let me pause, forward and rewind the videos the AppleTV is playing. From my Mac:

I thought airplay was to be an open but of kit, but seems like its iOS and Mac only. I'd like other peeps to open up to it more.

What previous post? The first one in here from you was the airplay for osx one....

AirPlay also does work from Windows, by way of iTunes. Although I do agree, the more versatility with this protocol, the better.

I did also pick up a pair of Chromecasts:
http://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/devices/chromecast/#netflix

(For $35 each, why not?)

It's a pretty simple, yet slick device. Sort of a subset of AirPlay's functionality, but it does for YouTube and Netflix (from Chrome) exactly what ClickToFlash's AirPlay feature (that this thread discusses) does for Safari. I like it!

sorry it was a different thread

yeah thats what I wanted to see if AppleTv can do!

Yes it can, and it handles a lot more than merely YouTube -- if you use ClickToFlash with Safari. That is what this thread has been discussing for almost two years now.

but!!!! you can't pause from the computer. It sends the video to the apple tv but if something happends you can't continue from were you left off. You have to start over!

Its a nice little plugin! but not something you can control like the Chromecast can! but I guess it will do for now. Might give HudTube on the applestore a try

but!!!! you can't pause from the computer.

No, but you can, with the actual AppleTV remote. Or the Apple's iOS app "Remote." Why is that such a bad thing?

(And if you're jailbroken, you can use AirControl to pause from your Mac, as I mentioned above.)

Its a nice little plugin! but not something you can control like the Chromecast can!

Right but the Chromecast doesn't even *have* a physical remote at all. Controlling from the computer (or handheld) is your only choice.

Might give HudTube on the applestore a try

HUDTube doesn't let you pause either...

I meant video and that from other than iTunes, also would be nice if i can airplay my windows desktop via airplay too.... thought someone would have come up with stuff already for this, but not much around
