Can't stand it

It should simply be a preference, either in the Preferences dialogs or just a simple preference than can be changed via the terminal or a text file.

For those of us who are advanced browser users, this autocomplete is ridiculously annoying. For us, changing a preference via the terminal isn't tough work. And the history solution, though a workaround, isn't good enough for me. I use my history. The other workaround--typing a space or two before typing the URL--isn't acceptable either, because then I still have to type in full URLs.

This thing is slowing me down a whole bunch, probably losing 20 minutes a day just in having type in full URLs to avoid being taken to the wrong place.

I really don't want to have to switch browsers, but it's nearly a deal breaker for me, too. Another week or two of this, and I think I'll have to switch.

So what's wrong with simply bookmarking the sites you go to frequently, so you don't have to type anything? Just point and click.

One day, I too hope to become an advanced browser user.

I was wondering about that, too. What does that mean? That you know about User Agent switching? That you know how to download YouTube videos via the Activity window? That you customize the shortcut for switching between tabs? What makes one an "advanced browser user"?

Surely an "advanced browser user" would know how to fix the URL auto-complete problem, right?

This is 2010

The world has been on the web for 15 years now...the address bar has been the ONLY consistent thing in the browser! I think "http:// " is understood world wide. Why mess with that?

I don't think the internet would have gotten so big if something so central was malfunctioning...if it aint broke, dont fix it!

I haven't had a problem yet

I noticed the change, but it hasn't bothered me or my wife. It seems more logical now. I will tinker around with some different approaches to see if it gets in the way. This thread reminds me of when Apple's beta for Safari 4 came out with the tabs up in the top of the window pane which I kind of liked. Then there were a bunch of complaints and Apple reverted to the old style. Chrome uses that approach and I think it works better.

I develop websites, so I end up going to hundreds of sites every day. I do have my most common ones bookmarked, but I view too many unique URLS to rely on bookmarks.

One day, I too hope to become an advanced browser user.

My point exactly...It was a sarcastic title, I'm mocking the new autocomplete feature.

Testing a workaround with a Safari extension

UPDATE: Shaun Inman has made an improved version of my original Safari extension: http://www.shauninman.com/archive/2010/08/25/smrt.

I've been trying to get around this with a Safari extension: http://bit.ly/aKgVlh

It's a horrible hack - it uses JavaScript to inject an odd UTF-8 character before each character in the page title. This means that after the second character is typed into the address bar page titles from the history will not be suggested (but URLs from the history will still be).

Note that you must clear your existing history first (else these will still be suggested).

This does not apply to other items (e.g. existing bookmarks).

It has a few quirks: short tab names are shifted to the left and in a couple of minor situations gaps appear between the title characters - when inspecting element or for the suggestions that appear based on URL in the address bar.

This is JavaScript based, so it may have issues with some sites that manipulate the page title.

Count me in...

I type in goo for google.com and I get news.google.com.

I used to just type a couple letter and hit enter. Now I have to scroll down the menu and choose and read to make sure it is correct. The print is very light so it's not even easy to see where you are going if you press Return.

Use Google Chrome ;)

I tried it and it is very buggy. A lot of Javascript issues. I want to recommend it to Windows users but it doesn't even work right on my web applications, which have the ability to go back in history. It just ignores it. Safari is by far the best browser but this little quirk in the address bar is annoying sometimes.

Wow; I don't have a solution, but I find this to be one of the best features of the new safari. I NEVER have to touch my bookmarks now. I hit "Cmd T", start to type the description or address of the site I want to go to, and I'm STILL there faster than opening a new tab and finding the spot in my bookmarks.

Put me down as one of the few who really appreciate this feature in every browser it appears in.

My god this is pissing me off! I usually press CMD+T and then type Y and YouTube.com will appear. Or, I'll press ap and Apple.com will appear.

Now, it is just an absolute mess. I press Y and I get a load of junk.

Great that some people find this useful, but give us an option to turn this crappy feature off. Does nothing but slow down my workflow.

still no solution...

this is getting very frustrating. because of the url complete issue i have experimented with a switch to chrome over the last several days.

chrome is ok, however it is frustrating that they don't give you a preference option to open with a blank page (it requires a plugin!). it also takes getting used to not having a separate text entry area for urls and search items.

maybe i'll check out opera for the first time in a few years. firefox seems too clunky. if safari changes the url thing i'm going back in a second, however until then i'm gonna be using chrome.

Same happened with Exposé. Better wait for someone to come up with a hack instead of waiting Apple for a solution.
