In the terminal type:

defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4IncludeFancyURLCompletionList -bool NO

restart safari, done. sanity is back.

Doesn't work on Safari 5, which you would know if you read the thread. See post #72.

Seems like Apple fixed this "issue" with 5.0.1 (or 5.0.2). Now auto-completition is giving more accurate results.

At one time Apple used to make things for smart people. Now they are dumbing things down. I wonder what they made Steve Jobs inhale when he was away.

Very, very annoying feature.

Even more frustrating, resetting Safari doesn't seem to delete the history in the URL auto-complete. I try to come here and once accidentally went to forums.me, and even after wiping history it, and other things I never want to visit again, keep popping up as suggestions. I HATE this feature.

"Even more frustrating, resetting Safari doesn't seem to delete the history in the URL auto-complete."

Does anyone know _where_ this information is stored?

Perhaps the file can be manually deleted....

library - caches - metadata - safari - history

Finally gave up

This had been annoying me for too long, and I've never really taken to Firefox, so I have made the jump to Opera. So far I am loving it, there is searchable history, click-to-flash functionality and there are preference settings for everything.

Oh yeah, and the auto-complete isn't nearly so annoying.

People should keep reporting this issue to Apple. I hope we can see an improved address bar soon because as it is, I as well find it kind of inconvenient to use.

Firefox's "Awesome Bar" is light ages ahead of Safari's "smart" bar.

I just upgraded from 5.0.2 to 5.0.3. The release notes mentioned "More accurate Top Hit results in the Address Field".

I haven't tried many URL's yet, but I've seen it got rid of at least one annoyance when going to craigslist.com.

I guess they listened.

It's better, but still stupid. It'll randomly remove things from the drop down list.

Solution

I had this problem with 5.0.4

Normally I hit "y" in the address field and it immediately fills in "youtube.com" - perfect.

One time I accidently typed "yout" & hit return too soon and it took me to "www.yout.com". From then on typing "y" took me to "www.yout.com" instead of "youtube.com"

Here's my solution that worked without clearing Safari's history:
Using HoudahSpot (great Spotlight replacement) I located the "yout.com" Safari History Item.*

Deleted just that history item, emptied the trash--all while Safari was still running--and Auto-complete is again working the way I need it to.

*Or navigate to ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/History to find the item manually. I like HoudahSpot because it can search inside the items--just like Spotlight but easier to handle.
