In response to an earlier comment...

I presume it does work with Flash, I've not noticed any websites that particularly havent worked or displayed correctly yet.

The only issue I've had so far is with Lloyds TSB internet banking! I couldnt sign on at all, but in Firefox and IE it all worked fine.

Stupid me - I downloaded it to my IBM laptop. It's a piece of ****. There are no menus (no text anyway). I opened it several times to make sure, rebooted (as you have to do in Windows, as we all know, when things don't work), and still, no menus. Piece of ****.

I had the same thing happen when I installed it.

But, I found someone had already stumbled on the fix on Apple Discussions:

"Got it working.

First I did the following. Open the Safari directory and found a directory called Safari.resources. I copied both Fonts that are located in that directory into windows. Closed restarted. STILL didn't work.

I then renamed the safari.resources to something else. Load the application get an Access Violation. (Clicked twice for the fun)

Then rename it back and ITS WORKING.

Just sharing my experience "

Just rename a file / folder and move a couple of fonts into the Windows Font folder.

Sure, it's not elegant. And, it's down-right embarrassing. But, the fix does work. I have Safari working just fine now.

It does reflect poorly that Apple had these glitches. It would have been far more impressive to have had it work flawlessly for everyone from the start. But, it didn't.

On another note, am I the only one who has wondered why Windows users will be able to download Safari for free and get the latest version, while Mac users have not been able to do so?

By that, consider that to go from Safari 1.x to Safari 2.x we were required to purchase a newer version of OS X.

Sure, you could copy Safari 2.0 from someone else's Tiger installation to run on your Panther system. But, there was no means to directly (and legally) download Safari 2.x for use on OS 10.3.x and older.

Apple's website and distribution model would indicate that if you wanted Safari 2.x that you were intended to purchase Tiger. That was one of Tiger's main features. They did not intend for users of OS 10.3.x to get Safari 2.x without buying Tiger.

So, Windows users get a free pass, and Mac users have to buy the right to use the latest Safari? What kind of support is that?

That's bad news for Apple because Safari isn't in beta quality at this time. It's useless on my machine and I have heard that from a lot of people. Welcome to the real world, Apple.

Apple really needs to ensure they continue providing updates, patches, etc. on a very timely basis - with so many poeple trying out the public beta already coupled with Apple's aggressive claims, Apple need to make sure its first impression on PC users is a good one - otherwise, many Windows users will trash it and never use it again if there are too many bugs, poor performance, etc.

A guy with an IBM laptop calling Safari a piece of 'stuff'.........

Websters should add that to the definition of 'incongruous'.

Personally I disagree, as the majority of my current experiences with Safari on a Vista machine have been pleasurable. The security fix has certainly improved most of the bugs I had before. For example, it hasnt crashed on me at all since the update.

Thats what I like on Microsoft: You can get a lot of features of Vista for your XP system for free (newest Mail client, Desktop Search, IE7, Windows Media Player 11, .NET 3.0 and so on).

Well, we got to download Safari 3 free... right? giving them Safari is like Jobs said "giving a giant sized glass of cool beer to someone in hell" or something like that...

Blurry Text

Why does text displayed in Safari for Windows look so darn blurry it's just painful! I tried setting anti-aliasing to all 3 levels, same problem.

Firefox, IE text looks great. What's up?

I think its just the font.

I have got used to it now, but I know what you mean about it appearing blurry.

Although now to me, it doesnt appear to be =/ maybe something changed in the update?

My friend (XP user) uses Safari and he was just telling me how much faster it is then IE7.

one million downloads, muhahahaha!!!

imagine how many downloads there are including both windows AND mac, now that is something to look up!

.. but how many of those do you think will be mac users using it as part of their dual boot? this isn't purely 'new users'

Font is same type and size as Firefox. Safari is so blurry I can't even use it more than 2 minutes.

I read somewhere some thought it was fact Apple wouldn't use ClearType for Windows?

Well, it's free except for the small detail that it's all hugely proprietary and there's no easy way to migrate your content to other apps or platforms...

Anybody know if the new update to Safari does have a capability of showing ClearType fonts? As mine appears to be completely fine now?

That's so nice of you.. I wanted to say the same thing, so I don't even have to type it myself. Only thing different, I wanted to say it about the Mac ;-)

EDIT: I love my Mac, but I don't really understand how a Mac user who's a little bit of honesty left can call Windows more proprietary than Mac OS X.. the latter is even bound to the hardware. Needless to say there's no (easy) way to transfer all that songs bought from iTunes to Windows Media player.. while there's Microsoft Office for the Mac, I haven't seen an implementation of iWork so far.. is there a way to run my Keynote presentations on Windows if my Powerbook battery is empty and I forgot my charger, and everybody in the audience just has a Windows laptop?

It works "fine" on my laptop in XP. Pageloads are ridiculously faster than Firefox or IE. I dislike the absence of Cleartype or SmoothScrolling. This program is a beta (just like they tell you), but it has the framework to be a good PC app.

Edit: After trying to upload some pics on Facebook, Safari Java is still extremely slow. I guess I like my Firefox still.

It's possible but it seems unlikely. Something like that (basically a new "feature") would not normally be included in an emergency .01 security update. Maybe you're just getting used to the Mac-style font smoothing? It's definitely an adjustment. It bothered me for quite a while, but I'm used to it now and it no longer appears overly blurry to me.
