Silverlight is on the don't use list. Netflix uses Silverlight. Does that mean that Apple wants me to use Apple TV??—No effing way!!

Like it or not, this is a Windoz World, and there ain't nothing Apple can do to change it. All they can do is make OSX users miserable. The other day I had a hard time installing Sonic Pi. an open source Midi Coding program http://sonic-pi.net because it isn't available from the Apple Store. Meh

Flash dead? Great. :)

Silverlight dead? Not so much, unless Netflix offer another way to play their content.

Not sure if people have actually read the article and realize that this is all "disabled by default", not "removed entirely"?

They...do. HTML5. Two years ago? Something like that. Even on Windows you don't need Silverlight. (Hasn't Microsoft stopped development on it?)

Well, no, Apple did change it. Also Google. You may have noticed that Apple sells large numbers of iOS devices, which have never used Flash etc.

Yes I read the article, but I'm NOT interested in jumping through hoops to view Netflix!!

And Slverlight is STILL REQUIRED for Netflix. And NO Microsoft is still releasing NEW versions. I'm running Version 5.1 (5.1.41212.0) Apple says that the latest version is need to prevent security threats.

Yes Flash is evil. Yes Microsoft is evil. Sorry, but I still need Silverlight to view Netflix.

I believe this is a matter of opinion.. flash died off years ago, in my opinion.

A lot of European sites still use Flash.

Yeah down with stupid Flash, sure I'm with it.

The reality is many video sites/services I use, still require Flash, so all you are really doing Apple is guaranteeing I won't be using your browser (Safari).

Exactly, you cannot subscribe to MLB TV for Major League Baseball games in the USA without FLASH. I assume the NFL games are the same. These are major PAY streaming sites that require FLASH. Apple will have to change their minds first. Now MLB TV is available on the iPhone, so they must have an alternative to use, but they're not using it on PCs or Macs currently.

That's fine Apple. But you are WAY BEHIND on WebRTC. Where is it? Even in Safari Technology Review, it's completely absent!

My startup (Inzite) Is crying out for WebRTC support. We have native HTML5 and WebRTC support, but unfortunately we need to divert people over to Chrome for any video calls at the moment.

We were hoping for WebRTC announcements at the WWDC, but unless I've missed an announcement, it's not forthcoming.
I hear you. Working on a multiplayer HTML5 game here using the WebRTC datachannel for peer-to-peer connections. Here is some wishful thinking that it might be added later this year: https://thenewdialtone.com/webrtc-in-safari/

I can understand the hate for Flash due to its overuse as a media player, which never should have happened in the first place, but it's still great the things it was originally designed for, i.e- vector animations and games. It's a shame that over-ambition and a horrific security record have basically erased the original intent of Flash.

Still, isn't this feature already present in Safari? Is it not just becoming the default that's different in Sierra? I've been using ClickToPlugin for so long I haven't really kept up with Safari's built in capabilities.

Good. I use Chrome and my laptop is in an abusive relationship with Flash, which regularly thrashes my CPU.

Forget that. QuickTime > HTML5 for playing videos. Do you want to use 5% CPU or 100% CPU? I don't know whether it's the standard, the browser implementation, or the site implementation, but HTML5 players always suck, sometimes even worse than Flash.

I use Click2Plugin to force YouTube videos to play with QuickTime. So much nicer.

IDK. They announced it like 5 times, and they definitely didn't do it after the first time. Anyway, Amazon Instant Video does require Silverlight. I only have that turd enabled in Firefox.

Yep, it's always been great for games. I never understood why it was used for video. That was a total hack.

Why? Did you see this in the OP?
.....
When a website directly embeds a visible plug-in object, Safari instead presents a placeholder element with a "Click to use" button. When that's clicked, Safari offers the user the options of activating the plug-in just one time or every time the user visits that website. Here too, the default option is to activate the plug-in only once.
.....
One of the things I dislike about the current Safari is how it handles Flash and plugins in general. Giving more readily available, user control is a positive development, no?

Flash is bad and provides security risks, but Safari has to find ways to stop auto playing videos. Just the other day I visited a site and below where I was reading a video stated playing, blasting enough to wake my toddler. I was so angry I almost threw my MBP against the wall.

It doesn't appear that Java is allowed on Sierra at all. Apps that depend on Java like Adobe's Creative suite prior to Adobe Cloud won't work without Java.

I have an Adobe Cloud account but I only get Lightroom and Photoshop. The rest of the suite, I use my purchased Adobe CS3. It doesn't work in Sierra. Anybody found any solutions to this?

Stop using Java.
