That's not going to happen. Steve Jobs has said many times physical media is dying and Apple will not put a DVD or Blu-Ray player on ATV.

Which is why I won't buy one. I need a DVD player, but I don't need what AppleTV provides. I'm just saying that Apple could have sold more AppleTV units to people like me who would consider replacing their DVD player with one.

Seems like a silly, dogmatic attitude for Apple to have. They need to cater to the customers, not dictate what format is dying and isn't. There are aisles and aisles of DVD for sale in stores that prove Jobs wrong on that. I'm not saying DVDs won't someday go away, but we're likely many years away from that. Why make a product that doesn't fit the reality of the market? Even the iPod and iTunes offered an easy route for CDs to be used. AppleTV offers no such concession.

I don't understand why Apple wouldn't offer 2 models, one without DVD player and one with. Charge me another $30 for it. I'd buy one at $129, no question.

Well the price point is perfect. Even though is less than what I expected in terms of features. I might end up getting one just to complement my Apple ecosystem.
That is exactly what I am doing now. I use it to access my dvd collection that I have ripped onto my hard drive. And when I miss a show on tv, I can download it, convert it and watch it. Conversion only takes me 2 minutes for a 30 minute show. my iBeast seems to blaze through that with no problems. It just gives me another way to access my media.

Well, I picked one up at my local Apple store. So far it has been a bit in my house. We've used it for a lot of netflix streaming, radio and mobile me gallery viewing.

I'd love to know how many of those were bought by people who have a 1st-gen ATV vs brand new ATV customers.

I am a happy owner of a 1st generation Apple TV. I'm keeping my current machine, because the 2nd generation has no apps. It's the only advantage I see. I stream all local content, and don't rent anything.

The day I know apps are coming to the new Apple TV is the day my credit card comes out. But not before.

We're buying into ATV at Christmas. It's the perfect $99 present, will interface with my Mac and the replacement we need to buy for a dead HP, and will interface with our iPad. What's not to like at $99??

Of course it won't happen...
Because then everyone would realize that every $99 BluRay player has similar features as Apple TV, and.... also plays BluRay discs.

This whole AirPlay thing won't sway a lot of people, it's complicated and nerdy. The problem is that Apple TV is not something the masses would buy, like an MP3 player or a phone. It's an enthusiast device and as such it will never take off. Most people wouldn't have the slightest clue what to do with that box if someone puts it next to their TVs. Even less if they have to go into a store and buy one.
Everyone coming from the computer business is making the same mistake: Most people want to switch their TVs on, sit on the couch do absolutely NOTHING. Pressing the channel up/down button or MAYBE slipping in a BluRay/DVD disc is the most interactive thing most will ever do. If people want to surf the web or use apps, they use a computer or a phone/tablet. So all that remains is renting movies online. Netflix already handles that quite well and my guess is that you'll be able to access Netflix directly from most TVs, DVRs and BluRay players without the need for some otherwise useless $99 box.

I have a first Gen appleTV, and no plans to change it out for the new model. I will admit the 40g HDD was pretty useless, but it does serve well as an interface to the Itunes library on my Mac Pro.

The inclusion of Netflix streaming was tempting, but I already do that with another piece of equipment.

I bought one, mostly wanting to see if they were as useful as Apple made them out to be. I now use it daily. Amazing product with tons of potential. I just hope they find a way to make typing easier. Maybe a keyboard or something. It's a pain to type in account information, search YouTube, etc.

I just bought mine Saturday and I love it!:D There's a huge variety of content and the airplay is really cool. It's a good media hub and it lets me get all kinds of movies instantly before I decide to buy a physical copy on blu-ray. And TV shows at a buck? Awesome! I'm watching 24 as we speak!:):apple:

just bc you need a dvd player doesn't mean everyone else does too. most tech savy people have blu-ray or stream only. regular dvds are dying and blu-ray's will eventually die once they start to stream at 1080P.

physical media is dying and apple is an innovative company, so why would they put a dvd player in a device that is meant for streaming?

i have no use for a dvd player and no use for an internal cd/drive drive on my computer. it's the future.....

Just rip the DVD on your computer and be done with it (it requires some forward planning as the re-encoding will take an hour or two unless you have a quad or even-more-core computer).

The AppleTV is not a catch-all set-top box, it is just a streaming client for video the same way the Airport Express is for audio. The AppleTV is not meant to replace everything you have on top of your TV, it is just there to provide a link between your computer (iPad, iPhone, iPod touch) and by extension the iTunes Store.

Just received mine on Friday and spent most of the weekend watching movies and shows on it as well as streaming my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on my iMac and MBP to the HDTV/Bose audio system. I don't watch regular TV, so I canceled my Verizon FiOS TV account and am going ATV all the way with the Netflix account. I just want to watch several movies and a some documentary shows per week, so this is all fine with me.

I really don't watch "live" TV at all, including most sports, so this makes perfect sense for me. I did want to catch some of the MLB playoffs, so I went to MLB.com to sign up for a $9.95 package to watch any of the postseason games but I'd only be able to watch that on the computer. That's fine for now. I think Apple needs to sign on NFL, MLB, and NBA for live streaming eventually if it's going to become the main centerpiece of most people's living rooms. For a guy like me, the ATV is all I need. The last thing on TV I watched before I got the ATV was a bit of the Winter Olympics back in February.

Every $99 BluRay player allows me to stream content from my computer (iPad, iPhone, etc.) to my TV? That is new to me.

Why can't you have both a DVD player and an Apple TV plugged into your TV?

You know they have a $500 remote control available for it right? Called an iPad.

My slightly more expensive DVD player does. And so does my TV, my DirecTV boxes, my PS3, my first-gen Apple TV, ....

Because Apple does not want to be in the DVD-player business. Why does the Airport Express does not have a CD player built-in? It would save me one device next to my audio set-up.

Fine, if these devices already do exactly what you want why you are even considering an AppleTV?

Was really hoping that the AirPort Express got Video Streaming capabilities "AirPlay." Possible an HDMI port to hook up to a TV without an ethernet port and you are good for your Audio and Video requirements, along with USB printing/storage and WiFi networking.
Well, the AppleTV is the video-enhanced version of the Airport Express. Pure and simple.

PROS:

very clean interface
best netflix gui (so far)
plays iTunes on my home theater env.

CONS:

flickr support is WEAK
no pandora(boxee has it)
no hulu
won't play anything outside of itunes/paid content

so basically i pretty much got it for iTunes.

my home theater uses all these pieces for media consumption:

windows 7 media center with hulu and boxee(good for pandora/flickr) running on it too

ps3 with ps3 media server streaming to it
apple tv for itunes and netflix
xbox 360 as a redundant step child

I could see picking up one of these to replace my current DVD player but beyond that, the functionality it provides is simply not worth $99.
And is the $99 Airport Express is worth its money (particularly if you only use it to route audio to your stereo)?
Do not compare the AppleTV to a DVD player, it is not a DVD player. I also do not compare the Airport Express to a CD-player (though both serve the purpose of brining audio into my stereo system).

RCA out missing

Too bad they didn't put RCA out on it... it would have been 5$ extra to implement and would allow everyone with a good amp to stream to home wifi from ipod/iphone/ipad/computer. This would be perfect for less audiophile listenings and to listen to movies in a stereo setup.

As it is, one has to buy a DAC and use the spdif out which is ok but not worth the investment for me.

As it is, I look forward to an airplay-capable clone w/ RCA outs. Isn't it a standard?

Every $99 BluRay player allows me to stream content from my computer (iPad, iPhone, etc.) to my TV? That is new to me.

Most new players and TVs can do just that. This feature is so 2009.
And they can play FullHD and MKV material, which the Apple TV STILL does not play.

I've had mine for about a week or so now. Works great, especially after it has been jail-broken. I have older equipment that is not net ready. This was an inexpensive way to upgrade my setup.
