This makes me think them leaving Apple was not Apple's fault. If they had truly wanted to stay but been forced out by Apple, it's a low move to go to the company that relentless copies Apple.

Curious - do they already use Samsung phones? Are they anti-Apple? Was Viv created using Windows computers?
[doublepost=1475718188][/doublepost]What was Samsung's own built-in assistant? I completely forgot ...
This sums up the love/hate relation that Apple execs (incl. Steve) have with field specialists:

I am afraid that something like this happened to the AppleCar exec that was fired recently
(but don't worry: Phil got the taptic engine as his accomplishment for the next decade...)

Sigh

Works flawlessly for me. But then again i speak clearly and don't have a strong accent which is the main problem with all these Assistants.

Siri needs deeper integrations and they are slowly rolling that out. I want to be able to search within Plex or Evernote for example

Of course it works great! I have the quintessential American accent and it recognizes it easily. However it works only to a limited extent. If I were to ask it "Should I buy the Bentley or the Toyota?" Itll say "Im sure I dont know Uni Grad". That is limited. It should be able to atleast pull up results about Bentley vs Toyota. With AI, results would actually be the assistant finding all findings on Bentley models, prices, prestige, blah blah blah, likewise with Toyota and offer me a suggestion, or atleast pull up results with Bentley vs Toyota. But it cant do that, because its not powered by AI - which Viv can do, and Google Assistant will be able to.

Thats why Apple needs to step up their game.

Someone posted they don't want AI mining your data. Then how is it supposed to work? Geez. Go back to a flip phone, then.

Agree. People laud Apple's data and personal privacy policies and iOS's sandboxed approach above those of Samson, Google etc, but then complain that the AI experience is poor by comparison to the competitors'. Both are valid, but it's a matter of you can't have your cake and eat it.

Everyone has a strong accent. It just depends what you take as the reference point.

Is anyone paying attention at Apple anymore?

Facebook and Google also decline to buy. Maybe Apple realized that since Tom Gruber, one of the founders and the Chief Scientist that created Siri, remains today at Apple, they didn't need to buy out the other founders who left Apple. Maybe since they have the leading tech from their purchase of VocalIQ, they know something you don't.

So Apple needs to step up their game to match something that neither Google nor Samsung can presently do??? I'll bet on the tech from VocalIQ that Apple acquired. Oh, and while it's little known, Tom Gruber, the Chief Scientist who created Siri, and one of the founders of the company, remains at Apple.

Honest question: would they be allowed to ship this with their Android phones in place of Google Assistant?

I know Amazon have had problems replacing Google's parts of Android - it's a take it all or leave it all kind of thing.

Then in a year or two they'll leave Samsung and start another AI called Visi and get bought by Google!

GOOD! The creators behind Siri KNEW what would happen if Apple bought Viv. You want Samsung to buy it. Look what Apple did to Siri.

Wait till they find out what Samsung do to VIV...

Really??

Nearly every new OS release is bricking devices by the boatload.

Out of curiosity - how much is a boatload? Is the boat Titanic size or just one man paddle bucket?

Those guys have a good racket going. It's early days in AI and companies have no real idea what they're buying for all those millions.

Fortune

Samsung probably paid a fortune to acquire this company. I wonder how long the founders have signed on to stay with it and work at Samsung. One has to believe that as soon as that period is done, they are jumping ship and starting AI company number three. I'm sure they'd have no need of VC money at this point. Though with two successful sales to tech giants, I suppose they can get unlimited VC money at this point if they want it. They could launch "Brian Company" with a single sheet of paper and VCs would give them money.

Demoing the technology is one thing. Ratcheting it up to work on a 500 million devices is quite another. Siri is quite impressive for how much work she is doing and the slow but steady improvements.

Siri is quite impressive

....hasn't been for me.

Not that I am the gold standard for users, but whatever Apple releases and I am not using needs work.
(Siri, iCloud, Apple Music) Apple since 1984, been through a few duds, iDisk, etc.

Yesterdays birthday boy would probably agree:

Siri is a big bag of hurt

LOL. Don't take it personally. When you start working, you'll realize its nothing to get upset about.

They have a good gig going. Create AI, Sell, Profit!, repeat.

Samsung is fine at acquiring software companies and poor at implementation. They are the masters of mobile bloatware like Hewlett Packard PCs were 10 years ago. Their specs aren't bad but, their software is god awful.
Reminds me of when HP bought Palm OS and let it rot and wither away. I hope Samsung doesn't do that.
Instead of Samsung, Gooogle or Apple should have bought them.

The latest release of Google phones and Pixel phone specific features like the Google assistant might have put Samsung on the defense. Google and Samsung are not exactly on good terms, this only means Samsung might try to implement an AI assistant in their Tizen OS for use in IOT devices and perhaps not in phones.

hmm.. Maybe samsung is going to make something like Amazon echo.

Anyways, I think everyone has a leg up on apple these days as Siri still dramatically sucks. Although it has gotten better these last couple of months, and I don't mean the third party integration.

Would love to replace siri with Google assistant!

I don't understand the Siri hate. While watching the Google Assistant presentation, I was able to do everything* with Siri they did on stage with GA. Live. Not a recorded demo as the Google presenter himself said it was.

*the one thing Siri stumbled on was getting directions to the restaurant. I had to ask for directions to the restaurant by name as opposed to saying 'how do I get there" as GA is apparently able to do.

I work at an animation studio. Regardless of whether you actually think Samsung copies Apple, if I was at a studio where the general feeling was we've been ripped off by another company, I don't think I would go and work for that company.

A great acquisition for them considering the power of Viv (as demonstrations suggest). I wonder if Viv would ever have existed had Apple not bought Siri and then stagnate with it. Oh yes - they've embedded it into the OS (and desktop) and have moved things along. But when you consider Apple's resources and these independents and what they've done with Viv - you would think Siri would be FAR more advanced by now.

In the mean time, I'm struggling to get Siri to do the most basic things. It feels like she's getting more stupider by the day.

Do Samsung internally think they are ripping off Apple? How many ideas / decisions coming from your workplace have originated from other animation studios? Quite a few I imagine - and thats no different to any other company.

Companies copy / take inspiration from all other companies, including Apple. 100% of Apple's choices are not 100% Apple original.

Lastly, Samsung is more than just smartphones....
