Samsung Display has again been rumored as the exclusive supplier of OLED panels for the 2017 iPhone, according to new claims made by sources in the Taiwan supply chain (via DigiTimes). Back in April, The Korea Herald reported that Samsung would supply Apple with OLED panels in 2017, furthering rumors from as early as January that Apple and Samsung were in talks for an OLED manufacturing partnership.

Next year's iPhone is said to come in 4.7-inch, 5.5-inch, and 5.8-inch sizes, with the last model believed to be the only iPhone with an OLED display. The OLED version's actual touch-sensitive screen real estate may in fact be closer to 5.5-inches, or possibly 5.1- and 5.2-inches, if the rumor of a curved display is true.

Samsung's current estimates place the company at manufacturing 20 million units per month, according to the supply chain sources. The company's shipments of OLED units are estimated to reach 590 million by 2019. As for benefits, OLED screens can be brighter, clearer, and lead to more energy efficient iPhones.
In a separate DigiTimes report posted today, Wistron is believed to be a potential third partner for the manufacturing of the 2017 iPhone, following Foxconn and Pegatron. Wistron was previously rumored to be part of Apple's diversification in its supply chain this year, but it seems like the company was left out of iPhone 7 manufacturing. In the past, Wistron helped supply the iPhone 5c and iPhone SE.

"Guys - you know that iPhone, the one that's so wide you have to operate it with two hands?"

    "Let's make it even wider!"

Wow, I've always looked at my iPhone and thought "I wish the screen would wrap around the edges". It's mindblowing that Apple are literally just coping a feature first seen on Samsung devices a few years ago. It's pointless.

Good news for Samsung on landing a large order. I am sure their marketing team is drinking late into the night. I think some partisans around here are going to have a meltdown!

iPhone is starting to look more like micro iPad mini than a phone..

You will need two hands to hold this one and cargo pockets..

All I want is a ~4.5" iPhone with flagship specs in a device around the size of the 5S. IMO that's the perfect size for a phone.

I think they're going to make the edges wrap around to get rid of all the buttons and instead make them all touch based. They will also get rid of the mute switch like they did on the iPad. Unlike the S7 edge's which is purely for aesthetics, Apple will bring some functionality with their implementation. If they want a true touch screen phone with no buttons then they might as well go all out.

I imagine there will be a huge uproar with this (along with the removal of the home button), similar to the removal of the headphone jack this year.

How do you know that's what they are doing? Apple have rarely been first to do anything, they usually take their time and choose before releasing anything. It could be that they saw the S7 Edge and thought of a better way of doing it, any way wouldn't it make a change for Apple to copy them, after all the year a of Samsung copying Apple :D

I used a curved Galaxy phone for a few weeks while I was traveling. I hated the curved screen, as it added little functionality and I would accidentally touch the screen just by holding the phone in my hand.

And I don't like this idea of just the larger model getting the OLED screen. I would say the larger iPhone is too big to comfortably carry for men, who usually don't have a bag to put it in.

Sweet! Would love the 5.8" one. Very happy with current 5.5 size.

I think you could be right, they started towards the removal of buttons with the removal of the clickable home button, I think we could see it put into the screen alongside the Touch ID feature. Then the removal of the power button, volume and mute button to be replaced with a wrap around display. OR what about if they did something similar to the Touch Bar, where the edges were able to change function? For example they could be a mute button, on off and so on, but it could also change to be other things like notifications and so on?

Fine, they can keep the OLED and silly wrap around screen for the larger model, so long as the smallest model has ranged wireless charging!

I'm totally fine with a 5.8" display for my next iPhone. I'm more than used to the Plus size, and little bit more would be welcome too.

4.0, 4.7, 5.0, 5.1-5.2, 5.5, and 5.8" display sizes? Talk about a spaghetti strategy like Samsung. Throw at the wall and see what sticks.

What I want to see is the exclusive supplier of 4" OLED screens for the new iPhone SE Mark II (or whatever they might want to call it). Anything else is a non sale for me. My iPhone 6 is my last large phone. Had it for 2 years waiting for a worthy smaller phone to replace it. If Apple updates the 4" then that'll be it.

I got my G935U all-band unlocked for USA S7 Edge on Cyber Monday from Best Buy for $649 with free wireless charger. Looks fantastic, works great in all respects. If you like the IOS environment then a curved Samsung super AMOLED screen is a great outcome. Too bad you won't be getting SD card storage with it.

And no my S7 has never got hot.
