Alright !!! Its over We have Won & Were Free!!!!

Where will the Endor Party be for Apple like in return of the JEDI!!!!

Apple and Samsung have settled an ongoing legal battle that has spanned seven years, according to court documents filed with the Northern District Court of California this morning.

In the document, Apple and Samsung said they have agreed to drop and settle the remaining claims and counter claims in the design patent legal battle that saw them back in court in May.

The terms of the settlement were not included in the court document, but Samsung had been ordered by the jury to pay $539 millionApple and Samsung's legal dispute has been ongoing since 2011, when Apple sued Samsung for violating Apple design patents with five android devices sold between 2010 and 2011.

Samsung was found guilty of infringing on Apple patents back in 2012, but the two companies have spent the last six years duking it out over the total amount Samsung owes Apple for the violation.

Samsung has argued vehemently that it should have had to pay damages only for the portion of the iPhone's design that it copied, while Apple has continually asked for a payment based on the full value of the iPhone.

The court in May largely sided with Apple, ordering Samsung to pay $539 million, a decision Samsung was not happy with. The South Korean company filed an appeal demanding a new trial on June 11, but has now dropped all appeals since a settlement has been reached.

Should have continued fighting. Many friends have dumped iPhones for Samsungs and I see Samsung as the largest threat out there. The respect/fear would have been better than the money.

So, help me out here... Does that mean Samsung doesn't have to pay the $539 mil?

I wonder what the lawyer costs were for all those years...

Finally it ends. Samsung and Apple are best buddies after all. 2 out of 3 iPhone screens to be made this year will be powered by Samsung. I bet Samsung threatened Apple to raise prices on their parts.

Extortion? Now THAT would be a juicy part 2 to this story.

its over....

like... finally finally over?

2018... it's been one hell of a year

They should make both parties compensate the court system for all the time they wasted on this. Apple and Samsung should have just come to a settlement back when the case was first brought.

Probably a cross-licensing deal was worked out between Apple and Samsung.

Every other tech giant does this, whether it's Intel, Google, Huawei, Ericsson. Apple probably finally agreed to play ball, otherwise there will be endless battles.

Keep in mind this battle started 7 years ago when Jobs was still in charge. That's a lifetime ago for a tech company. The people at Apple who started this battle are probably long gone and everyone else is wondering why this is still going on.

I'm sure Samsung realized it was fruitless to keep on appealing as the last judgement was greater than the initial judgement. Pretty sure Apple got what they wanted.

Apple knew the horse had bolted a long time ago. It was time to stop wasting energy on a case that they could never truly win. The only definite winners here are the law firms.

this whole case was literally about devices that haven't even been sold for 5-6 years. at some point you have to realize the cost of continuing far exceeded the potential winning amount, and a settlement with ongoing license deals for future growth is in everyones best interest.

The long national nightmare is finally over. Now the Qualcomm suit needs to be settled and we can move on with life.

Dang! I figured the kids I've been raising since this thing started would have time to grow up, go to law school and work on this case someday.

THere is still the international courts, no? ;)

So why did Apple agree to a settlement?

Get the money FASTER, along with significant reduction for prices in the following components:

OLED
RAM
SSD storage
~ maybe new battery technology?

Anyone noticed the announcement of Samsung sending invites for August 9th or Note 9?

Qualcomm, you're up next...

Lol ... man with your emoticon and that line ... looks to be an awesome settling.

PS: Apple needs to bring the Joker emoticon to iPhone X and Animoji!

Surprised by this news...... a welcome surprise.

No surprised.
You can't piss off your biggest supplier or your largest customer.
Samsung is Apple's largest supplier, from displays, to memory, former boundary and other components.
Apple is one of Samsung's best customers.

Even though there is a wall between the components and smartphone divisions; there is no wall between the profits.

I wonder if Apple got a credit against its parts bill instead of the judgement. A credit would be non-taxable for apple and a non-cash expense for Samsung, which would be a win-win.

How does that make a difference? One increases gross revenue, the other decreases COGS. The net (i.e., taxable) income is exactly the same.

And if Samsung doesn't collect $500 million on component sales how is that a non-cash expense? They either pay the cash or don't collect the cash. The net result on their cash flow and balance sheet is the same.
