Another day another hypocrite in the smartphone universe.

Once again, Apple set the example and the copy cats gonna copy
They didn't tho.... I can name an extremely well known brand who first had the idea of not automatically including a. Charging brick well in advance of apples claims... Once again, apple.colies an idea, gets the press, and hey presto. They invented the idea!!!!

Fair enough, go on then. Name that extremely well known brand that didn’t supply charger for any of their phones. Always happy to learn 👍

I don't know if this has been updated, Xiaomi actually set the same price, 3999RMB, on both the standard version of Mi11 (shown on the left), and the package version, which is the same standard version packaging + a separate charger (worth 99RMB when sold separately, shown on the right).

The 3999RMB pricing is already considered very aggressive, for what the Mi11 delivers, and the charger is an actual high-speed charger, unlike what Apple used to bundle, which led to the reasoning of "no use to the user anyway".

With the same pricing, Xiaomi is leaving the choice of choosing from "environment" and "one more charger" to the consumers, which is NOT the same tactic that Apple had used.

Therefore, I think what they are doing is brilliant, at least from a marketing point of view, if not from an environmental pov, and not really the same as what Apple has done.

Didnt Picasso say "Great artists steal ? " Oh sorry its Samsung we are talking about and I do have one of their products before you lot start - a top of the range sound bar and the app is just shocking tbh....

How is this brilliant? Producing the chargers, using the same amount of boxing, etc is still the environmental issue.

Agreed.

The only reason I can think of is that Apple ultimately has more bargaining power with their user base, so they can pull off a move like not bundling a charger with their iPhones, while giving them the option of purchasing one of their own out of their own pocket, with minimal backlash.

Apple has the power to force through such changes, and they know it.

Xiaomi likely knows they are in a more vulnerable position. They cater to the more budget-conscious crowd, and android phone brands are more interchangeable with one another relative to the iPhone. Xiaomi clearly doesn't want to risk a user revolt, hence the option for them to still get a charger should they so desire.

At the end of the day, it's not so much marketing as much as it is a concession of its place in the greater scheme of things.

Apple is still producing the 20W chargers in separate boxes and likely in far higher numbers compared to Xiaomi so Apple is still contributing to the environmental issue.

Apple can get away with not including the charger due to the size of there userbase and the factor that most Apple customers can afford to pay extra for the charger if they need one.
It's not a customer friendly decision though.

It's not expensive to buy good quality third party chargers if you do need one but Xiaomi is being the more customer friendly of the two companies by offering the phone with or without the charger for the same price.
If your buying the Mi11 and already have a charger you can be environmentally conscious and buy the phone without one. If you need the charger you can get it without having to pay more.

This is spin.

It's not about a comparison of volume of chargers that were manufactured between Apple and Xiaomi, it's about the volume of chargers that Apple is manufacturing pre-charger announcement and post-charger announcement. I'm glad we agree that manufacturing consumer electronic components that people have at home and can use (like chargers) is wasteful, but if Xiaomi is going environmental at least modify the packaging as there is less post-consumer waste, less greenhouse gases etc.

It's not really customer unfriendly either. And there are going to be varied views depending on one's viewpoint. Sure Xiaomi is more customer friendly and less environmentally friendly. It's not about picking the box that suits ones needs, it's about not manufacturing what will become e-waste.

Yeah so “extremely well known” that you didn’t bother to mention the company to support your post. 🙄

Do your own research, they have fallen on hard times of late, so I'm expecting jibes about how they don't matter any more, still doesn't mean they weren't market leaders at one stage with innovation...

This information let's Apple off the hook as the originator of "a bad idea" such as this. Apple copying this idea is a good thing due to the massive number of devices Apple sells. So for once, hats off to Apple for copying an idea, that no doubt is unpopular with some, but good for the environment.

And unlocking the "passing the buck while cutting costs" achievement.

A quality company like Apple doesn't stoop low like the trashy company Samsung is...and always will be. F-em.
While I’d love to agree, Apple is also a company and also has its vices and quite the list of cock ups ;)
They’re not quite as low as Samsung though, at least in my eyes

The point that's always missed in this charging brick conversation is that USB-C is new to iPhone, so most iPhone users have too many Lighting to USB bricks, not USB-C bricks, so many new iPhone users actually need a USB-C charging brick unlike many Android owners. Apple is literally screwing over it's most faithful customers in favor of Android users. Apple should at least offer an additional cable or combo cable. I have one such cable in my car, but it's for specifically that purpose, to be able to charge anyone's phone, no matter the type. For home, I have no such charging brick for a new iPhone right out of the box.

New iphone users don't *need* a usb-c charging brick. It may be a faster charge rate, but they don't *need* one depending on their own unique circumstances. Additionally, no one knows the universe of "it's most faithful" customers that feel screwed over. It could be that universe is down to a few vocal posters on MacRumors, but you cannot see that in Apples' financials.

Financials don't represent all aspects of the universe. There are plenty who might disagree or are negatively affected by a change but still stay with Apple for various other reasons. A fairly basic concept that gets surfaced almost as often as it gets (often enough conveniently) overlooked.

"Plenty" does not quantify this discussion, as the universe in terms of this discussion is amorphous. The reality of this seems to be more manufacturers are jumping on this particular bandwagon. No doubt the most inconvenienced are those new iphone buyers who don't have a usb to lightning cable. For them the reality is they will have to buy something with their purchase.

Sure, "plenty" who disagree with this could still stay with Apple for their own reasons.

And the point that is intentionally discarded or disregarded in this charging brick conversation is that every single pre-existing charging solution that charged an iPhone 11 will charge an iPhone 12. So if you don't have a USB-c charger or convenient USB-c on your desktop or laptop, then -ignore- the USB-c lightning cable, leave it in the box (for when you catch up), and just continue to use your pre-existing charging solution(s). Which ... hm ... would have become e-waste if Apple replaced Lightning with USB-c on the iPhone 12. But, lets not dwell on that too long; It could dangerously imply that their was more though put into the Lightning connector + USB-c Lightning cable combo then a knee-jerk meme sort of "Ha ha! You've activated my trap card!" logic would otherwise grant.

If you are coming from Android - well - hey, you're set. Apple included a USB-c Lightning cable, not a USB-a Lightning cable, so the usb-c charger(s) you already have works! No new charger needed :D

And if you or someone else are complete mobile phone neophytes and the iPhone 12 is your first ever mobile phone - then again, you're also set, the included USB-c Lightning cable doesn't confine you to only a maximum of 5v/2.4amp "standard charging" that a Lightning "A" ended cable would. And you can start yourself, even better, by picking up an 4-5 port Anker USB-c / USB-a combo charger. It'll allow you to charge not only your iPhone 12, but any future Apple (or not) accessories or other devices you pick up. That Anker charger will let you charge any additional devices you pickup in the future, be they, an iPad, Apple Watch, or AirPods (pro or not), all at once. Or, any competing Android equivalents whether their "buds", "tabs", "gears", or anything else.

Samsung, on the otherhand, well, not only are they just literally screwing over their most faithful customers by not including a charger anymore, but they're ripping away a *fast* charger. Samsung could show some actual courage and just say something like "Uh... hey, phones need chargers and we're not monsters. So their will always be an in-box fast charger. *mic drop*"

So the apple 11 owner is sorted if he gets a 12?, but the Samsung loyalist is screwed... Surely, he would have last years model, so already will have the same charger?

Every charger that came with every iPhone and iPad that I ever purchased is still in the box that is came in. When I sold or traded the phone in, the charger and cable were still in the box having never been removed. I have an Anger charger on the night table and a cab to plug into the computer if needed.....oops I lied I did put a charger cube in my backpack along with a cable.

If the Samsung 'loyalist' isn't screwed because they have last years charger or can continue using their own previous charging infrastructure -- And therefore, begrudgingly, grumbly even, Samsung gets a pass for *also* dropping the inbox charger. Then Apple is just as much off the hook itself.

I mean, is there any dispute that last years iPhone chargers (fast, "standard", or slow, 3rd party, or Apple 1st party) and cables do not still charge the brand new iPhone 12? That doesn't mean you have to like Apple's choice. Just as you don't have to like Samsungs choice.

I'm just saying that Samsung could have stood in staunch solidarity with "everyone" and backed up that October 13 mocking tweet by saying, "Hey, we hear you loud and clear. We'll never not ship a fast charger, ever." But, they didn't. So they've just as much screwed over their loyalists as everyone else claims that Apple screwed over their own. But, no critic of Apple's choice wants to concede this. Please point out where anyone is as pichfork and tiki torch fiery angry about Samsungs betrayal - as they have been or where about Apple.
