What exactly do you think was copied? Curious.

Are you kidding me? They've copied icons even. Down to the exact color and notches cut out on them. If you can't tell they blatantly copy Apple, you're blind.
They don't even remotely attempt to hide it.

4 words, 4 different fonts. Really? :(

Not that it has the slightest bit to do with the product itself, but it perfectly sums up the chaos that Samsung's mobile devices line-up is.

Haha! My thought's exactly. Well, they do everything from supertankers to miniscule electronic components, so maybe that reflects somehow how they are everywhere...?

Except that it doesn't. :)

"Sidesync allows the Galaxy Tab S to answer phone calls routed through a Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone if both devices are on the same WiFi network."

There is an important technical difference here which is that most of the features that are now being used to tie together a constellation of Apple devices (play video from your laptop to an AppleTV, use an iPhone with a game controller to play a game on OSX, answer phone calls using your iMac, etc) operate using a network constructed on the fly, NOT the local WiFi network.
[This was true in the past for Airdrop but not most other features; but it's pretty much all the way through iOS8/OSX10]

It's not clear technically exactly how this is done --- it might be that a WiFi network is constructed on the fly, it might be through a BT network, it might be a combination [the BT 3 spec allows for using BT to set up a WiFi network which is then used for heavy duty transport] --- and the details may differ depending on the exact properties required and the HW involved.

Regardless of the tech details, the Apple solution provides a superior user experience because it allows your "personal network" to move with you and to work without having to validate. eg your phone should still just talk to your laptop in a hotel room, even if you have not paid for hotel WiFi; or you should be able to go to a mutual friend's house and stream a movie from your phone to their Apple TV without having to connect your phone to the mutual friend's network. (I say mutual friend --- someone you're unlikely to visit again --- because, sure, a friend you'll probably connect your phone to the WiFi network for other reasons since you'll frequently be over.)

Now that Samsung knows the direction they want to copy, it's not clear to me if they can, at least not right away. Depending on the exact HW involved, it may take another refresh round for all their various pieces (phones, tablets, Galaxy Gear, their inevitable equivalent to ChromeCast, etc) to get good enough BT/WiFi HW. There may also be a problem with APIs. Done incorrectly this sort of ad hoc networking is obviously a security disaster waiting to happen --- you don't want random phones walking by to be able to connect to your laptop --- and it's possible (I don't know the details) that most of Apple's work has actually been not in getting the HW to work but in the OS and APIs to get everything to work SECURELY. Airdrop (which has more user intervention) may, in fact, have been a deliberate prototype for the whole system --- a test case that could have been shut down fairly easily if it was discovered that there was some overlooked conceptual security flaw.

While one can probably trust Google to get the upper layers correct when they get around to copying his, you're a braver man than I am if you're going to trust Samsung's legendary attention to detail and concern with providing timely updates to this sort of aggressively new security environment.

Sorry you are very wrong about sidesync. It can construct on the fly wifi connection with wifi direct. e.g between a tablet and phone. I suspect if your PC support wifi direct connection that will work too.

I doubt apple came out with a very different implementation than this. Maybe apple copy the idea from this as well (like they always do). Sidesync has been around for 2 years. I am interested to hear what excuses fanboys will put out that samsung copied Apple here.

It is so funny that that when apple announced something new many fanboys jump up and down declaring a super duper new innovation when in fact it is just another copied idea.

The truth is, Samsung has been far more innovative than Apple in recent years, with their variety of devices and hardware capability. The Note 3 is a beauty of technical development, even if not as pretty or sturdy as an iPhone, and is as innovative as anything Apple has done.

Apple hasn't really changed the iPhone in any significant way since the original, while their Android counterparts (not just Samsung) have been trying all sorts of different things. Not all of them have been successes, but no one can accuse Android devices of being boring.

While I actually like the simplicity of iOS better than Android OS, iPhone hardware has just gotten. . .boring.

Kudos on the AMOLED display. I wish Apple would put AMOLED in their devices. I have a Lumia 800 and that screen is so vivid and beautiful. AMOLED is awesome

What have they been doing besides making the screens bigger and upping the screen resolution? Maybe camera improvements but Apple has been doing that too. They're all still basically slabs of glass.

In the case of the Note 3, the same size or maybe a mm or 2 thicker than an iPhone:

Quad core processor
32GB storage
3GB RAM
Micro SD card
Wireless AC support
Bluetooth
NFC
IR blaster
camera that can take 4K video
1920 x 1080 screen
removable battery
Wireless charging (if you get the "special" back)
US and Russian satellite GPS support
WACOM digitizer screen with pressure sensitive pen

Preach. I swear some of these people have no clue of how software development actually works. There is no chance Samsung went from having no plans for Sidesync last week to deciding to implement it and have it ready for shipping on consumer devices in ONE MONTH.
Naive...seriously, if you think Samsung just sat and waited to see what the announcement would hold like any old fanboy, you've got some serious things to learn. Multinational corporations will go to extraordinary lengths in order to learn what the competition is doing. Especially Samsung. In Samsungs case, it seems they are looking for...inspiration.

I'd bet they knew about continuity the moment Apple's exec team put the green light for it.

Yeah and sidesync (the equivalent to continuity) has been out for 2 years. Your statement is just nonsense.

The name "side sync" has been out for 2 years, but not the "handoff" features we saw at WWDC the other week. Before then, side sync was just to share a mouse/display, nothing really that innovative about it since I've been doing it since 2011 on my iPhone. Samsung has been ripping off Apple for years, court documents prove it. Can you really not see that?

Really what is hands off? It is really no more continuing to do what I am doing on the phone on the pc. With sidesync even the earlier version, I can continue to edit my document etc on the virtual phone screen.

What has samsung ripped off from apple? Rectangular shape? Square icons? Apple patents are such a joke. Worst still is the kangaroo American court which recognizes these ridiculous patents which have been dismissed by courts around the world.

The US patent system IS a joke and always has been. Though if you think its bad now, take a look at the turn of the century and the Wright Brothers attempts to patent flight to the point they were awarded a patent so broad that, literally, the concept of flight itself was given to them, even if others developed different systems of control. The equal of that today would be if the courts awarded Apple the patent on the concept of a smartphone in general.

Dude...did you even watch Samsung's press conference the other day? Because it really seems like you didn't. We're talking about voice call hand off between devices, which IS new. Every smartphone has been able to sync documents wirelessly for years now.

And somehow, my iPhone 5 exhibits zero lag, while the latest and greatest samsung GS5 lags all the time. The response time on android is atrocious. Also, the iPhone has half of those things, and Android's implementation of external storage is horrible at best. The iPhone supports Bluetooth, GLONASS, etc. iOS is just much more efficient and works with the hardware a lot better. This is coming from someone who owns both devices.

Considering I'm a programmer, probably more than you think.

They can announce software whenever they'd like; making it work is another story.

I'm a programmer too. You don't promise features with less than a month to mint the software if you haven't even began to think about how to implement them.

Not sure what you are talking about. I can always answer call with sidesync.

Have you seen the ridiculous slow scrolling speed of ios? I do a long and fast swipe it scrolls at the same speed and a short distance before it stops. On android the scroll distance and speed increased depending on how you swipe. It may stutters (which you call lag) while scrolling but the performance/throughput is still much better.

Ios may give you smooth scrolling but it is terrible in actual speed and performance. Also the animation in iOS also slows the opening of app. You may think it is fast but put it next to the note3 then you will see it is really slow

...never experienced what you are describing. Perhaps you should call for technical assistance. Why are you on an Apple site, anyways...?

I own both devices too. a 5S and Note 3. I had every iPhone since Day One and a Note 3 for about 6 months. I've also had every iPad model too, including the mini. And my entire 4TB video collection, thousands of dollars over the years, is based on iTunes DRM. So I am tied to Apple more than anyone. I have not had nearly the experience with Android as I have with Apple, yet I am impressed with the Note 3.

The newest GS5 and Note 3 do not lag. A few apps occasionally show some lag, but that will be greatly alleviated once Android switches over from their Dalvik runtime to the same ART that Apple uses, which which is in beta now.

"Only" half the features? Well, my Ford Explorer has "only" half the features a Lamborghini has. Clearly my Explorer is just as good

Its time we stop letting Apple off the hook with excuses and hyping trivial advances as the greatest thing ever.

This whole Apple-Samsung thing reminds me of a book I just finished, "Birdmen: The Wright Brothers, Glenn Curtiss, and the Battle to Control the Skies" by Lawrence Goldstone. Its about the early days of flight and the battle between the Wright Brothers and Glenn Curtis, another legendary early plane manufacturer. Substitute Wrights and Curtiss with Apple and Samsung.

Basically, after developing the Wright Flyer in 1903, the suoer-secretive Wright Brothers spent so much time in pursuit of monopoly, with overreaching patents that pretty much wanted the whole idea of flying to be theirs, that they stopped innovating altogether, and spent all their time from 1908 onwards in court, obsessed about their patents. That allowed Curtiss, and others, to truly innovate with new technologies and pull ahead of them. The Wrights won the court battles, but they rode their initial successes too long, and others surpassed them.

Sound familiar? If Apple isn't careful, history will being repeated.

Used to be that enthusiasts would welcome copying of any kind as long as the new product is better. Loyalty fell to the company with the best product.

Not sure those enthusiastic about Apple see things this way. So they just defend and defend.

Personally, if Samsung can make a better tablet device I will switch. I don't like Apples slow pace of change to maximize profit. Not consumer centric.

i agree!!

Yeah, the only real significant advance Apple has made in the last few years is the 64 bit processor. Its not as flashy as a WACOM digitizer or an IR blaster, but getting in on the 64 bit architecture ahead of everyone else could pay off down the road.

Nice discussion.

The Samsung rep at BB told me this past Monday they would have the S Tablet available later in the week for folks to preview. Well it was not there yesterday to look at.

Always interested in looking at the latest but I have not kept one Samsung tablet past the return date yet. :D

While I'm leaning towards Samsung's phones (right now at least), I always thought that the iPad was still the best tablet, especially once they came out with the 128GB version.
