Apple sells many different computers, iPods and iPads but have a one-phone-fits-all policy for reasons that escape me.

They needs to have a few different phones available different people with different needs and different tastes. Choice! What a concept.

And I'd like an AMG to cost $500, I'd work an extra day to pay for it. I don't think even Sweden would give you what you want.

If all I am paying for is data, no cellular, no minutes and no number, why would that be so hard to do ?

An average of about 5 gigs of data without telephony, texting or anything else should be rather cheap.

There is no reason for it to be more than $30 a month

I don't think dpi is more important than job qualifications, just thinking of one instance you might want to use high quality. maybe wedding invitations is a better example.

Also, I was talking about laser printers, not ink jets. big difference in precision. tests show humans can tell the difference between 1200 and 2400 dpi at that distance, and I have seen good laser printing where i' like "damn, those letters have super smooth perfect curves", but haven't directly compared 600 to 1200 to 2400 dpi on laser printers specifically, but I can pretty much guarantee I could tell 600 from 1200 with no magnifying glass for certain text or graphics, and guessing maybe on 1200 to 2400. Again, displays use anti-aliasing, laser printers don't. if you can't see pixels or anti aliasing on your "retina" displays, you probably will be happy with 600 dpi laser printer.

Anti-aliasing makes blurry edges and is a pathetic way to make up for lack of resolution, and needs to die.

I'll concede that you want to do your resume in top quality, but 99% of the stuff print in companies is as low as the printer can do, bc you need to read the info where the text is good enough at 300/600 dpi. When reading sales reports, I just need it to be clean. All $50 laser printers are a step up from the DotMatrix we used years ago.

I actually, and many I know people, prefer Mac anti-Aliasing to some Windows versions of jaggy pixels. You know? Bc that is more accurate to what a printer actually prints.

Not to be a jerk but you need to go back to design school or MS certification classes bc you don't know what you are talking about.

Apple post Steve is Apple pre-Steve-come-back ....

It's all downhill from here on out baby (at least in terms of phones, macs are still awesome).

nice signature tag you've got

how's experience in terms of speed / usage etc after moving from iPhone to Note II ?

how long since you moved ?

This should have been called the Samsung Galaxy S3s

Being an avid Samsung fan, this certainly was less than what I expected. I was seriously put off by the complete absence of mentioning a processor, until I realized WHY; because this was an international audience watching. The international version appears to include an 8 core 1.6GHz processor, while here in the US we get a 1.9GHz quadcore. Seriously WTF!?

SO... do you think iPhone will still reign in US ? or

isn't a quad core fast enough ?

Seem whether Samsung or Apple, people expect every new device to be revolutionary. It just isn't possible. I don't know what Gizmodo thought Samsung could do that would be so revolutionary.

Re the phone, as one who just ditched a Samusng after six months to return to iPhone, I say, "Meh, it runs Android." I'm over Android. Never enjoyed it in those six months.

why ?

what was so bad with Android ?

Asking to learn .....

TIA

So how do you engineer software to make a web page look as good on iPhone's dinky narrow screen as it does on the S4's wider larger screen?

How do you make a movie look as good on Apple's 4" 640 row screen as Samsung's 5" 1080p screen?

Since it's not about the size anymore I guess both screen sizes give equal performance given the properly engineered software?

Size matters. Your girlfriend lied.

You've clearly missed the point. I wasn't talking about screen size but I'm not surprised that's what you've brought up so thoroughly.

I was talking about specs. By "size" I meant specs in general.

Apple needs to make a 4,7" screen on the next iPhone. I have a iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 and I use the Galaxy S3 mostly because of the bigger screen. Do not get me wrong about this, I love Apple products, but they have to rethink how big a phone should be to day!

Same reason I use my Nexus 4 over my iPhone 4S, mainly screen size.

I think Apple should do it, I totally agree. But I think they will have major problems implementing a larger phone because of their ecosystem. Android apps work like regular desktop and laptop apps. They can scale in size and still work perfectly. For example, photoshop works just as well on a 21 inch monitor and a 30 inch monitor. But because of the way Apple built iOS, that is not an option for them. I think they will have some major challenges if they want to add a larger screen. It just doesn't seem likely.

But who knows. Maybe there is a radical change in iOS in the works that could fix this.

Go watch the new Hobbit movie at 48 fps, and report back here ;) .

It's funny. You have this technologically impressive movie, displayed at a resolution that was almost unthinkable 12 years ago, and running at a super smooth frame rate almost as high as the human eye can consciously discern, and the end result...

...is it makes everything look kinda cheap.

There's something really tragic about that.

Well, Samsung certainly reached its peak. If its flagship phone is as lame as this big plastic, bad quality screen POS, there is nothing to worry for Apple.

Certainly, i think that Apple will take some measure to make sure its not lagging, but in terms of software and OS Apple is so far ahead, that its not even funny..

Only thing I can find from that Samsung announcement is 5 inch screen and few sensors.

It doesn't sound like you understand either iOS or Android based on your comments.

I plan on getting the S4 as my next phone, I have used a Nexus 4 and S3 for some months now after selling my iPhone 5 and see no reason to go back to Apple. I find that I don't miss the ecosystem as much as I was led to believe I would, and it will work in conjunction with my MBP and iPad mini flawlessly. (The same as my S3 and Nexus 4 did/does)

Much like instagram and other programs. Apple and others progress mobile photography to be as good as they can be and people throw tons of filters and degrade the image so it can look like a 1970s Polaroid.

Those are more stylistic choices, though. Unless they're really overdone (like some faked LOMO shots you see around the internet), they don't detract from the original picture at all. Most of the time they add to it.

The thing that made The Hobbit look so cheap was the smoothness of it all. You'd think having all the action moving onscreen at double the framerate would add to the experience. But it didn't. Made the movie look low budget as all get out instead.

To me, it was kinda like watching British shows on a US TV back in the 90's. The people moved around a little more quick than what you're used to seeing onscreen. Everything looked a little more stark. Even if what you were watching was some multimillion dollar movie, it seemed like it was shot with an old Sony camcorder or something.

Not all SAMOLED displays are made the same way.

On an 800x640 display (typical pre-HD display) at 260ppi... yep, PenTile looks like crap.
But we're talking about PenTile displays at 441ppi.
Unless you're rocking 20/5 vision, you are not goign to see the matrix at normal distances.

I don't know. Maybe the Sammy display is different, but what was that HTC Phone, the DNA? That one I saw in the flesh and I could see the matrix.

CNET has already checked the screen, it says that it is as pixelated as before, despite higher resolution and unnatural colours and contrast are there. Other than that, I see nothing worth mentioning in that S4, aside that its made of cheapest plastic available. Then there is a couple of half baked, half working strange apps like one that presumably follow where you are looking at and scroll accordingly. Ugh. Maybe its for those whose hands are busy looking at something on big screen... then again it will be hilarious as their porn will automatically scroll and already I can imagine how comical it might be..

Nice Device

First, I use Apple Products and love my MBP, iPhone 5, and the iPad. That being said, this phone is pretty nice and has lots of nice features. Even with the S3 I was tempted to switch. I did choose the iPhone 5 and I don't regret it but I love that there is competition out there for the iPhone. Hopefully, it will keep Apple on it's toes.

could you provide the link to that CNET article?

I only found this

As the rumors and leaks foretold, the GS4 has a 5-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a 1,920x1,080-pixel screen resolution. While it isn't exactly edge-to-edge, the smaller bezel makes the screen feel more expansive. At full brightness, the display's 441ppi pixel density looked rich and crisp, but I'll need to compare it with the BlackBerry Z10, iPhone 5, and others to really get a lock on just how sharp it is.

Tests show that Galaxy 4 screen is only half as bright as Nexus 4 screen. Samsung has only 258 lux brightness against 400 lux brightness of Nexus 4.

I jumped out of this debate a while back.
But here's a thought

Many say Apple is losing market share because of the small screen size...
Yet in Q412 Apple sold more iPhone 5 than the Galaxy S3.

So what about this new state of the art S4? I'd never buy a 5" screen phone that is 2&3/4" wide and 5.4" tall. No manner what the innovations are.

I'm not alone here.

Why won't Samsung make the S4 ( with all the souped up hardware a d software)in a 4" screen size? Something for the rest of us and the market share we represent? Which is quite, quite large?

Sort of hard to point to Apple for being alone out of touch or having a tin ear.

Have you got a link to where it says the plastic used is the cheapest available please? Also a link to the reference of half working apps please?
