I tried the 7" Galaxy Tab while I buying accessories for my iPad 2... Opened the browser and it crashed! So much for initial impressions... Second time round it started working, but the lack of response while typing in a URL was so frustrating. Glad I got the iPad.

i understand that this is a "pro-apple" site...

and the bashing on samsung tablets is expected...

but IMO the device is nice... sleak... ;)

U could go to any school in the country and find a graphic design major who could design something as nice or better than this. Who care what it looks like if doesnt turn on. this means nothing until they show us a working one. The ones they had were probably hollow with no existing parts inside.

To be fair the 7" Galaxy Tab out now is running an older Android OS and has last year's processing power. The 7, 8.9, 10" Tabs due out this summer will have significantly better hardware and be running a more advanced OS.

Then there is the abuse these floor models get from people pressing every little button.

First time I fired up a 7" Tab in Best Buy I couldn't get past the laggy screen. The device didn't seem responsive at all to any finger press. I was NOT impressed. But the second time I went looking at a different store the display model was very zippy. I had fun playing with the Google Skymap (akin to Apple's Skywalk app). Also pulled up video and then loaded some websites I knew had lots of Flash video. I was pleased to see the Flash play well.

One thing I didn't expect was to come away loving the 7" form factor. I think Apple is missing the boat on that one. 7" tablets are like Kindles - very easy to slip into a purse or overcoat/blazer jacket. And they are much lighter/easier to hold.

That's why I keep saying on this forum that summer will be very interesting. Lots of tablets and form factors running Android. Consumers will push a preference for the best choices. Not just memory size and to 3G or not, but tablet size, purity of the OS, price, camera specs.

And Safari crashes on my iOS devices at least once a day, often more. Depends on what sites and how much I'm making it do.

Just goes to show that WebKit ain't all there yet.

You might want to do a restore because that isn't normal.

One time I tried the Galaxy Tab and I tried to download the Dolphin browser, which made the tablet shut down and wouldn't turn back on. I have no clue what happened. However, it was a demo unit so I don't put much faith in it.

What is wrong with comparing tablet devices here? After all whatever the competition brings means that's something else for Apple to match or surpass.

Frankly given all the camera specs coming out for the competition tablets makes me even more disappointed in the meager offerings Apple gave us.

Also makes you wonder why Apple skimped on the cameras. One theory is that that saved something for the iPad3 upgrade. Another is that they just don't see the iPad as a content creation device. The cameras are made for video chatting and stupid human pet tricks (i.e. Photo Booth).

Then there's the issue of tablet size. Steve Jobs is on record saying the ideal size for a tablet is Apple's 10" full screen. No smaller devices need apply. But Samsung will be challenging that presumption with a range of sizes.

Are these not suitable topics of discussion for this forum?

Everyone knows that troll threads hide under the guise of "discussing technology" when in reality all the troll wants is to get reactions from people. This is why there should be an alternate OS thread to keep all the garbage in one place so that those of us who come to Macrumors can read Mac topics without wading through threads full of Android crap.

Yeah, the only problem is that *any* positive discussion about Android is immediately deemed "troll'ish", with Apple lovers declaring jihad against the poor soul who would even think of commenting about how nice it would be to manage music on his tablet without an iTunes computer.

Seriously, it's interested how insulted people around here seem whenever someone happens to mention how an Android tablet might have some specific advantages over an iPad.

the problem isn't that any positive discussion is labeled troll...

...the problem is that to date there has been no positive discussion about a shipping product. It is always "the *blank* that they swear will be out within the next 4-6 months totally kicks the iPads butt!"

It hasn't shipped, it isn't thinner, it has lies for ads, and it is from a company that already failed to deliver.

Kinda like that Xoom, you know the one that will be cheaper, really, later on, we swear, and that will have faster networking, after you mail it back to us, and that ha MUCH better specs, like a non-working card slot.

You want to talk about the better Android tablets? Fine. As soon as one exists, I would love to discuss it.

But as long as all you have is promises and dreams, don't come to my door.

Total nonsense. What happens is people say 'Android is better at X for me' yet perpetually and conveniently forget to put in that part at the end where it says 'for me'.

Then, if there aren't ritual posts where we lament 'I confess! I confess! Android is better at having widgets! I am compelled to admit this!' the 'fanboy' accusations start rolling out.

, with Apple lovers declaring jihad against the poor soul who would even think of commenting about how nice it would be to manage music on his tablet without an iTunes computer.

Why on Earth would people post threads on a Mac-specific website to wax poetic about not using iTunes? Everyone knows that there are alternatives to iTunes, and that iTunes doesn't suit all people. I don't come here to read threads that consist of 'boy, I sure wish this thing which does X, which everyone knows does X, didn't do X. Why does Apple force people to do things in a particular way instead of offering a product which isn't the product they offer?' People keep posting that garbage derailing useful threads.

Seriously, it's interested how insulted people around here seem whenever someone happens to mention how an Android tablet might have some specific advantages over an iPad.

It's interesting how nobody who shares your complaints ever discusses the matter with specific people and specific things they say in the forums, as they arise. We just have this routine despair about general cases that happened 'somewhere else in another thread somewhere' serving to smear the discussion and poison the well.

Oh yes, this hypothetical oh-so-meek poster who tentatively suggested that an Android tablet 'might' have 'specific' advantages over an iPad. The poor darling didn't get the accolades he felt he was entitled to, encountering the full wrath of Mac Rumors posters (AKA some reasoned disagreement).

There is no  big enough.

Hah, maybe, but my comments aren't even about specific products. I'll leave it at this: I own a lot of Apple products, including an iPad2. I like to buy the best products and the iPad2 fits the bill right now. However, when I dare to comment that Android has some appealing features that I'd like to have in a tablet and that maybe a year from now it won't be such an easy decision, I'm met with hatred and ridicule! People telling me that I'm wrong for not wanting to be tethered to iTunes, or laughing at me for being interested in widgets or Flash. Now, I'm always in favor of some healthy discussion over which has a better browser or application support, or even whether a file system is good to have on a tablet. But there seem to be some pretty vocal people around here who react violently to it. They seem personally insulted at the suggestion that Android OS might have a few areas that are, ghasp, better than iOS?

Just my two cents.

Right one cue. Thanks Carouser, you're one of them.

And you're surprised to see mac devotees with zeals in a mac community? Macrumors get so many contrarians who come here to bad mouth Apple that i think it fosters that anti troll behavior.

Many other sites simply move the discussions regarding other products to forums dedicated to discussions of other products instead of having multiple threads on xxx vs yyy on the main discussion page. I always thought Macrumors would be better off having dedicated "Other tablets&comparisons" section.

I've never managed to make safari crash on any of my devices all the way back to the original iPhone. Dunno what you're doing to it

Why come to "MACrumors" to post about Android? Is apple switching to Android. Is there a new MacAndroid product to ve inteoduced at WWDC?

I guess the guy makes the mistake that other people just MIGHT want to know what's going on in the rest of the "tech" world. I use mac stuff and Windows 7 and I MIGHT be interested also in Android if they make a compelling device one day.

I'd love to find a forum where people are secure enough not to act like children with their toys. When I see phrases like "poisoning the well" and "smear" when dealing with what are just toys and gizmos then I know it's hopeless :-(

I'm sure I'm guilty of this also but there's got to be a way to talk about the advantage and disadvantage of each toy with acting like a lot of immature geeks with no perspective on what's really important in life.

Maybe since they are truly "toys" it makes us act like kids on the playground?

I admire the mac regulars over here that point out some of the flaws in Apple's products. I already know they feel they are the best for them as they OWN them and hang out here but they are secure enough (read: real people) to the discuss pros and cons. I actually learn things this way.

Crap... sorry for the rant guys

What do you call it when I post reasoned opinions about tech and then see constant parades of people making vague complaints about the 'fanboys' who worship at Steve Jobs' feet, 'go back to the reverend', Android-haters, 'I can't say anything without facing a Jihad', bla bla bla? I'm not the block on civil discourse here.

All my mobil devices will be Apple. I love the Company and the ability to walk in a store and get friendly help. And we had iphone since day 1 so our iTunes library and apps are extensive and valuable (I do not believe in jailbreak) we bought all songs and tons of Apps why would I change ? Also this is just the beginning I see big things for Apple in the future. I truley believe without Apple progress would not have come that far. They push the limits and make others follow their lead and yet they will always be THE LEADER and not follower like Samsung

I didn't mean to point you out as a problem. Yours was the last heated reply I read and some of the language stuck with me.

Obviously if people are trying to get a reaction out of you or are just plain RUDE (like a lot are online) my only sad suggestion is to simply rise above it and don't let them goad you into being equally childish. Liking a certain product certainly doesn't make anybody a "fanboy".

I blame it on the silly combative phrasing people (kids) use for attention.
"Samsung finally beats Apple...yadda yadda"... I mean this is childish ***** from the get-go and the title instantly puts everybody in a bad mood before even visiting the thread. This obviously IS designed to rankle a mac "devotee" and should be ignored (easier said than done I know).

I guess it's human nature. I find the people over here more relaxed and
self-assured than most forums and would hate for it to start looking like like a bunch of posters from Endgadget

All good points. So you should be one of the MOST relaxed and non-combative types over here. You know what you like and and state the reasons (service, etc).
You should have no problem hearing some positives about other companies attempts and nobody is ever asking you to "change".

It's no threat to you at all... enjoy learning about all that's out there (though I'm sure you keep up anyways) and ignore the loaded language.

See when I go to iLounge I expect the topic to all be about iOS and no other operating system. But this forum covers more than just the mobile operating platform. It's as much about desktop hardware as it is mobile devices.

Maybe the discussion would be more helpful if it centered around the things posters would like to see Apple copy from competitors. For instance I rather like the 7" form factor alternative. And having dual speakers on the device would make my viewing experience better. The camera resolution is a no-brainer.

Thinness is not something I put a high value on. At least not in comparison to specs.

The interesting thing about my perspective is what gap the iPad filled last year. I've been a long time smartphone hold out because of their small screens and expensive carrier plans. Making the iPad as an enlarged iPod Touch last year was the magic pill that got me into the mobile OS/apps world. Now I want more from my devices. I want a true netbook replacement.

It seems that's where Google is going with Honeycomb but Apple's philosophy on tablets may be too stuck on content delivery. The MacBook Air seems to be their chosen netbook replacement deployment and that holds little appeal to me.

That's why I gravitate toward these discussions. I want to see the iPad user reaction to non-iPad tablets. We know what Apple did well in iPad and what has failed.

I'm in! I have sent you my CC info. It'll be a great companion to my JooJoo tablet:D

I agree the Samsung talk is premature... the specs seem to change daily. They CAN do thin however... the pricey series 9 is like the evil Windows version of the Air.

Nothings ever perfect though. It's got more processor oomph (i5) than the Air but no discrete GPU (aarg).

Last time I checked this forum was still called MACrumors, not gadget rumors or mobile OS rumors. We are Apple fanboys and don't wish to discuss inferior products from other companies that try to just copy Apple.
:D

I agree that we should have this moved to the off topic area.

But, out of curiosity. You cannot deem a product "inferior" to the iPad unless you have personally tried it. I personally dislike Samsung due to my terrible experience with their Galaxy S line of phones I tried before getting rid of.

But Samsung does really seem to be on the money with this design, their original Galaxy Tab was really just half a tablet. It had its use, but when it comes to a full blown tablet. Samsung is really impressing me with this, will I buy it? No, that's why I bought an iPad 1.
