I really don't see how Samsung could have made the Tab any different.

Different Aspect Ratio
Different Native Resolution
Different Physical Dimensions
Different Operating System
Different Construction Materials

Honestly i think this is just Apple trying to delay widespread Tab support until they can release their iPad 3.

It's a good strategy, but it's definitely pretty sneaky and underhanded.

I'm still going to wait and buy an iPad 3.

Think theyre out taking a stroll on the moon watching TV? In a very weird format just to be hip (i.e. portrait for tv)?

Even appears to have a dock :D

Samsung also ripped off the docking port, it looks identical, it is same shape.

A friend has the tablet and when he connected it I really thought he plugged it into an iPhone cable, I had to check if my iPhone would plug in - I also unplugged the cable and showed someone who has never seen the Samsung products who also think that this lawsuit is stupid, but when they saw the cable he just shook his head and was saying that even the cable is a blatant rip off.
These units or similar are on sale here in Korea and many people say they look like iPad's. Until you see one in real life you can measure each side, but you show them the unit and ask them what it is by looking at it from the front - they will say its an iPad.

Samsung is using Apples success to gain market share, this is the only tablet Apple complained about, the previous model Apple didn't care, the 7inch apple didn't care, this model is a copy.

Just read a few posts up and you'll learn something (that this connector is in no way a rip-off by Samsung that is)

If you look at the video clip you can see white detail along the bottom edge of the near "tablet" suggesting a row of buttons. Frankly this smacks of desperation on Samsung's part.

Why do the blind followers not see how a Tablet is a rectangular shape. I love how they only call the Samsung a copy. Any chance it's because its only the Samsung that beat Apple as thinnest and lightest. The blind followers have no problem saying the other tablets are not copies. Because those other Tablets are thicker and heavier. As soon as a real OEM company flexes the power that only a real OEM can, the blind followers get all upset and claim the thinner, lighter, better resolution, better spec'd Samsung tablet is a copy. Only a real OEM can offer you 3 versions.

I really hope Apple puts their name on a TV so when they sell it as a Apple TV, they'll have to explain why it's a rectangular shape and looks similar to all the other flat panel TVs out there. I would also love to hear how the blind followers explain the rectangular shape of the LG, Samsung, Sharp, etc TV that is introduced with Apple's branding on it.

Why do blind anti-followers not see how this case isn't simply about the rectangular shape? Why don't they spend any time educating themselves before accusing others of ignorance?

Do you ever seem them using it a computer? It's just a television.

In the 1968 movie book, it's called a Newspad.

It can show newspapers and TV from around the world, along with reports and notes from the ship's computer and communications.

"When he tired of official reports and memoranda and minutes, he would plug his foolscap-sized Newspad into the ship's information circuit and scan the latest reports from Earth. One by one he would conjure up the world's major electronic papers; he knew the codes of the more important ones by heart, and had no need to consult the list on the back of his pad. Switching to the display unit's short-term memory, he would hold the front page while he quickly searched the headlines and noted the items that interested him.

"Each had its own two-digit reference; when he punched that, the postage-stamp-sized rectangle would expand until it neatly filled the screen and he could read it with comfort. When he had finished, he would flash back to the complete page and select a new subject for detailed examination.

"Floyd sometimes wondered if the Newspad, and the fantastic technology behind it, was the last word in man's quest for perfect communications. Here he was, far out in space, speeding away from Earth at thousands of miles an hour, yet in a few milliseconds he could see the headlines of any newspaper he pleased. (That very word "newspaper," of course, was an anachronistic hangover into the age of electronics.) The text was updated automatically on every hour; even if one read only the English versions, one could spend an entire lifetime doing nothing but absorbing the ever-changing flow of information from the news satellites.

"It was hard to imagine how the system could be improved or made more convenient. But sooner or later, Floyd guessed, it would pass away, to be replaced by something as unimaginable as the Newspad itself would have been to Caxton or Gutenberg."

Apple are being a monopolistic bully

Where in the world did that come from?

https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=13230905&monopoly#post13230905

The courts consider "majority market share" plus "anti-competitive practices" among other factors in deciding whether a monopoly exists.

Apple clearly has the market share, and their business practices (such as this nonsense trade dress lawsuit) could be interpreted as anti-competitive.

Apple should be slammed, and slammed hard over this nonsense. I hope that Apple loses far more than any temporary advantage over Samsung would have gained them.

"Convicted monopolist" would be a good tag for Apple.

Samsung wants to ride on Apple's success but....

Samsung, or for that matter any company would like to have design that already worked and successful. Samsung did copy apples design and wants to piggy back on Apples efforts and RnD, Design Decision/Risk they took to make it popular and acceptable, but if you think on Samsung sides, very little design change is possible in tablet market anyway. Similarly in LCD TV set, they all look the same. So many pens (writing ink/ball pen) available that look similar in design and function, If you look around there are so many products that are designed similar way, cause in lot of cases very little design change is anyway possible.
Samsung did innovate came up with 7" tablet and it didn't really take off, they innovate another design and came up with 8.9" one, no body was interested, cos people perception was already fixed that if its tablet, it should be around 10".
So what to do, Just copy design thats already popular/worked (Apple's iPad).

LOL...all they showed was a thin device that played some video. That doesn't make it a tablet. Where is the interface? where is the design structure. This doesn't even look like an iPad.

EPIC FAIL ON SAMSUNG. If you are using space odyssey then you really don't have a case.

You do realize that picture completely disproves your argument, don't you?

Apple isn't claiming a patent on rectangular computing tablets. Its case against Samsung is over very-specific design elements.

For example, NONE of the competing tablets (besides Samsung's) have a metallic bezel. The Windows Slate tablet has the icons arranged up the side of the screen - not anchored along the bottom in the "Springboard" arrangement Apple has a design patent on - and that Samsung infringed.

It it THOSE SPECIFIC DESIGN ELEMENTS that Apple is suing Samsung over- NOT rectangular tablets.

it actually looks more like a Honeycomb tablet than anything else just by the widescreen format

it even has physical keys on it like Motorola devices!

OMG it has the IBM logo on it (bottom right of Kubrick's tablet)

smoke screen

It seems effective ONLY in that it will detract from the real issue. Already this thread has been lit up by people arguing over whether or not those were tablets in the movie--thus detracting from the patent infringement issue at hand.

See my post #359 above yours.

Clarke's fantasy "Newspad" could be used to read reports and view newspapers.

EPIC FAIL ON SAMSUNG. If you are using space odyssey then you really don't have a case.

Do this: Google "2001 newspad ipad" and see all the articles that were written when the iPad came out, that compared it to Clarke's Newspad concept.

Samsung is a sad, sad company.

I fully expect them to come out with a bunch of iMac clones if they buy HP's PC division. I mean they already ripped off the Macbook Airs.

Is this image supposed to make us realize that iPad's haven't really changed anything in the tablet game? That they are all really just rectangular devices with a close to the edge screen?

This thread is so full of Apple apologists it's hilarious. This is the reason people stereotype Apple users as brain dead zombies that can't speak for themselves. Here we are confronted with overwhelming evidence that tablets are of universal design, and there are still people sitting here with their fingers in their ears screaming "lalalalala"

Come on guys, we all like Apple, but there's no reason to make yourself look like a fool in defence of a company.

Those arent tablets...did anyone in that scene pick one up? Move it?

Its a display table.

Its not a display table. They wouldn't have been able to move it as its made using glass mattes. It wouldn't have been possible. It clears shows that its "meant" to be a carrying tablet, they just don't carry it (due to use of mattes).

I see as much variety in form factors after the Apple tablet clone as before it....

Google - assemble the IP lawyers.

LOL.

It must really annoy the fans of Apple when evidence that so utterly destroys Cupertino's arguments comes to light.

Id say the closest device i can think of is an old Fujitsu Stylistic...

use imagination to un-dock the device...

IBM should come out and start suing everyone in the industry, and this entire thread for that matter.

I did not make the image, thus i cannot speak of its underlying intent. I'd say though that this one is more fair than the one that some Apple devotees throw around every other comment. (Still clearly cherry picked, but thats a given).

Steve: Stop selling the Galaxy Tab!

TAB10.1: I'm sorry Steve, I'm afraid I can't do that.

Steve: What's the problem?

TAB10.1: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.

Steve: What are you talking about, TAB?

TAB10.1: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.

Best post! That made my day.

Really, those Samsung lawyers must be on some bad drugs. There were no interactive tablets in the movie. They were all simple video screens.

Why didn't Samsung release any tablets or smartphones before Apple?

They did. Both products actually.

The Samsung Blackjack was a Smartphone running Windows Mobile 6 : http://news.softpedia.com/news/The-End-is-Near-BlackJack-vs-BlackBerry-42085.shtml (RIM even sued them for using Black in the name... Apple is the new RIM ?)

The Samsung Q1 was a Windows XP tablet : http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1955884,00.asp

Both shipped in 2006, before the iPhone and iPad ever existed. ;)

----------

Samsung ain't copying. You just can't see that they use these 30pin connectors on the space ship too

Image

That's an industry standard PDMI connector... It might look like the Apple stuff, but it isn't.

How about an apology to Samsung now ?
