I think attaching an Xbox controller to an S3 to demo their game controller finally drove most people into the Samsung copies everything camp. Samsung is responsible for the growing public perception that they like to copy things. Why? Because the like to copy things. You don't think it is weird to have a Samsung executive making defensive statements about a product neither company makes?

I think it's equally weird for Phil to give an interview the night before the launch of the S4 and make statements which showed a lot of ignorance.

Because they copy anything and then sell it for a cheaper price. You won't understand that because you never be in Apple position. Nobody wants their hard gained design and technology to be easily copied (technically stolen). Especially, when you asked to the stealer about it, they confess no guilty.

Umm, could you please describe devices that are blatantly copied (from anyone) from Apple stuff? To me, Apple is just like any other tech company. They are no saints, much like Samsung, HTC, Sony etc.

No one bought smartphones? No one bough the Pebble? LOL OK...

So-called competition. Let me ask you this. If Samsung is no competition - why all the hate from forum members and also from Phil over at Apple? No so-called about it. Apple has serious competition in the cell market thanks to HTC and Samsung. Especially Samsung.

Personally I think the Pebble is on target. It's not overly complicated and while it might be able to be in better packaging (style wise) - it does light lifting - not heavy. If I were to WANT a smart watch - I wouldn't want it to replace my phone unless it actually replaced my phone. I wouldn't want a companion device. But having something that extends my smart phone to be able to see alerts, etc on my wrist and/or was NFC enabled - that's a good product.

Can you show me where Phil mentioned Samsung ?

I disagree with the person that asserted Samsung is no competition, of course they are. However, you are just making things up.

The latest reviews of the pebble look pretty nice. I am still having a hard time determining how big it is.

I'll just leave this here.

You think a marketing guy spinning is the same as claiming the Xbox controller is your controller? Not much point in a discussion then :)

Are you going to try and assert that Phil wasn't talking about Samsung? Really? He might not have mentioned Samsung by name. But he was most definitely talking about Samsung AND Android.

so apple copies the idea of a smart watch from one of the current manufacturers and samsung is evil for copying apple?

And no one here as ever heard of the Wii U Pro controller?

The Wii U Pro controller is the same design as Xbox which is the same design as the Dreamcast controller.

Nintendo's famicom controller is the GOAT though. Nintendo needs to go back and make that again.

That's the nature of the world. Good ideas spread. Sometimes they get aped.

Though how does hooking up a 360 controller show Samsung's copying? I kinda wish Apple would do something similar, and offer real controller support for the iPad.

The Super Nintendo controller was better.

Samsung might be working on one. And considering that Samsung has made smartwatches in the past and considering the amount of R&D it does, I have no doubt it is. However, let's see if they have the guts to release one prior to knowing generally what Apple is doing. I think there is a significant risk that Apple would show them up with a better device and I don't think they want to take that risk.

It seems Samsung cannot come up with own innovative idea...but is quick with coping someone’s.
The only hope for Apple is to do it right

Samsung has released this watches before. Smartwatches.

Sooooo Apple is the copycat here. Again again.

----------

And then can someone show me Samsung's?

they released Wachtphones since 2003... Learn before you talk

I never heard of Tag-Heuer until now -- wow, I never thought a watch could be so expensive?! They're certainly very nice, but who could justify dropping $6000 on a watch? Although, I guess it is roughly half the price of a Rolex after taking a look at those...

its jewellery and will keep its value. spend 6k on a car and watch the value drop. it is certainly justifiable if you can afford it.

The biggest innovation I look forward to seeing is how Apple, Samsung and any other company overcomes the battery longevity issues for such a small device.

If they have a significant breakthrough, it could lead to much improved performance in other mobile devices.

Apple will use their battery tech they've been using in their phones and Macs. Samsung will just make their watch into a grandfather clock on your wrist.

Samsung are copying all right, but it isn't from Apple.

So apparently Apple invented the lithium-ion/lithium-polymer battery now. Brilliant stuff. Did they also invent the liquid crystal display?

Resistance is futile, bud! Really!

You've asked me about, well... something that the world is already know about it.

The thing is.... seamless product integration is Apple's forte. Even the Apple-haters often admit that. That's where they will come out ahead, assuming of course that the fabled Apple smartwatch does indeed come out with a good degree of iOS integration.

Looking at the hypothetical Samsung me-too smartwatch scenario, what smart/mobile OS are they gonna use to counter an Apple smartwatch? Come up with an Android-based watch? Really? And they're gonna race forward ASAP to create this thing... without first securing Google's blessing? Really? I'd like to see them try. It might be possible they could come up with something workable. Then again, it's more likely they will end up creating another Android fragmentation spin-off.

Now this will be interesting. Both companies releasing a first-gen product at roughly the same time should give us an awesome perspective to compare the two company's products. My money would be on Apple to have a simpler and more elegant design, while Samsung will try to appeal to the Android/power-user crowd. I don't really know who would win out in a market like smart-watches though...

How could it possibly run a full version of iOS when it will be smaller than the current iPod nano, which does not run iOS. Text would be microscopic. Besides being too small, you can forget performing any tasks needing two hands. What am I missing here?

I don't think Tag keep there value. Steel Rolex sports models, yes. Patek, Audemars, Vacheron, Richard Mille, amongst some others of the real elite watchmakers too. Tag, Omega etc not so much

For those wondering how Samsung could have already started working on this:

1 - They hired a team of 100 people. They're not sure what they'll be doing, other than copying Apple and doing it quickly.

2 - They're working on trying to figure out how to invalidate the patents we've seen Apple publish or otherwise just go around them to achieve the same end result.

The first point is apparently true. There was a documentary where they interviewed a former Samsung executive and he said there was an entire division of a couple hundred people (I believe) whose entire job was to copy Apple. I can't vouch for anything said in it but it isn't surprising.

I'm trying to find a link but evey search brings up information about the trial.

EDIT: Take it with a grain of salt until I can find the link. Probably not until much later.

EDIT x2: Here's the link: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1157386/

It'll probably run 'full iOS' the same way that the original iPhone ran 'full Mac OS X'- i.e., it won't.
