How are they going to send a gif if they're restricted to SMS texting though?

They'd have to send it over Whatsapp.

I am from UK. Everyone I know use iMessage even place I work nearly all have iPhone. Only odd person just WhatsApp. It depend who you know. I much prefer iMessage over WhatsApp. I rarely use WhatsApp and don’t like it much really especially now owned by Facebook.

Yeah but the UK is an anomaly (as usual :p) in Europe. It has a similar iOS market share like the US, in the rest of Europe iOS has a market share between 15-30%, so people default to WhatsApp and I hate it lol

Totally fascinating. You don’t usually see the company with the largest market share taking childish potshots. But then Sammy has never been about taking the high road, have they? Even when Apple was the scrappy underdog the “I’m a Mac” campaign was cute, factual, and spoke to strengths. Samsung’s ads are just babyish, insecure, meanspirited jabs that don’t say a thing about what they do well (pause for comment).

They teased iPhone, then copied iPhone. Mocked the notch, then designed a notch. Maligned FaceID, then made a facial recognition system. Ridiculed removing the headphone jack, then removed the headphone jack. iMessage is just superior, and it’s one thing they can’t do anything about, so here comes a stupid “Ours is green, so poop on you!” campaign.

Samsung is a joke.

This. Continuing to take childish potshots like this long after the greater smartphone market has plateaued (and users have pretty well settled into either the apple or android camp) speaks volumes about Samsung.

They're pathetic.

When I had an iPhone I used SMS and WhatsApp, switching to Android made no difference to my comms app usage. These things are for communicating with people, not some shallow game of “who has the most expensive phone”. Why not use SMS for simple messages? Unless of course your mobile account is so cheap as to not bundle SMS in for free.

Is it just me, or has it always felt like the only people in Samsung's phone division who know what they're doing are the ones making the components (screens, SoCs, cameras, etc.) and manufacturing the final devices? Because their designs are always kinda fugly while all the changes and additions to Android only make it worse rather than better when you actually try to use the device rather than listening to the sales pitch.

Oh and before I get called an iPhone fanboy, I've never owned one and don't plan on getting one either. My smartphone history is as follows:
Nokia 3650 -> Nokia 6330 -> Nokia N81 8GB -> HTC Hero -> Nokia N9 -> Nokia Lumia 920 -> Jolla 1 -> Nexus 5 -> Sony Xperia X (running SailfishOS)

(Tablets: Nexus 7 -> Nexus 9)

Sadly, humorously true. But at least Brent ultimately became self-aware in his moment of reckoning. Samsung not so much.

It’s funny how such a non issue this is outside of the US.

the US is iMessage heavy similar to how China is weechat.

the rest are using 3rd party apps like WhatsApp and Viber.

I used to like WhatsApp, until we recently found out that Facebook is going to modify it so F*ckerburg can still read the messages. WhatsApp was great because it, like iMessages, was end-to-end encrypted.

This is such a stupid move by Samsung. It isn't going to convince someone to switch phones. Samsung doesn't do green bubbles on their phone, so why show me they are "better". I really don't know what they are trying to accomplish with this? Also, and I'm sure it's been mentioned, its not the color of the bubbles, its the functionality of the bubbles, green just represents bubbles that have less functionality.

As someone in the UK, this is not at all my experience. 99.9% of people use Whatsapp here, even techphobic old people.

It really isn't. I think Jay-Jacob's experience is pretty much an anomaly. Heck I reckon even Snapchat/Insta is more popular than iMessage in the UK.

If only the genius minds behind these gifs were utilized during R&D of the Galaxy Fold...then maybe, just maybe, things would of been different.

Force Apple to Open source iMessage with antitrust lawsuits. Make phones or make services, not both. Forbid vertical monopoly.

If they don’t comply, block Apple servers at carrier level.

I couldn’t give a damn about bubble colours unless I’m messaging non iPhone friends in another country - when I realise it’s costing me money. Suddenly the old school 160 character limit anxiety becomes very real!

The GIFs are stupid, but are people really that petty that they shun texting someone because they use an Android phone? :rolleyes:

Oh come on. Believe it or not there are folks still with phone plans that don't offer unlimited SMS. This very quickly leads to shunning non-iMessage users especially when group chats turn into a reply all nightmare. Want to alienate your family? Use SMS. Good strategy, actually :)

What cell phone plan doesn't have unlimited SMS these days?
I have group chats with my family all the time. Mix of iOS and Android. Haven't had any complaints so far.
