Samsung Creates Team of About 200 Employees Working Exclusively on copying Apple Products

If they could only afford it. Maybe they can buy some of their divisions.

Don't think the Korean government would allow it. Samsung and other Chaebols were created to help the Korean economy. Profit takes a backseat to the Korean economy for these entities.

That's more than what I can say for Apple with the US economy. It's not enough for Apple to just hoard money. They need to spend it on the US economy.
Samsung spends heavily on the Korean economy in R&D. Apple has contributed so much to the Korean economy just from buying their components and giving Samsung and others capex for them to spend on R&D and create high-paying jobs.
In contrast, Apple has created an army of low-pay tech support workers in the US. I'm willing to bet Apple invested more in Korea than they have in the US.

If Samsung wanted to copy Apple, they'd just walk into an Apple store. There's no reason to go to such convoluted measures to copy simple design ideas.

Not too sure about that.
Samsung was limiting itself by focusing on utility over form in their previous phones, but they're now working in reverse.
The S6 feels much better than any Apple product I owned and it's amazing how durable it is for a phone exterior made with mostly glass.
The S6 Edge is definitely the most attractive smartphone out there right now.

I wonder why? See attachment…

As for the edge—I know opinions vary, but I for one do not want my display to roll off the side of my device. The curved glare reflections cover the actual display, and UI elements fall off the side and can look somewhat distorted straight-on. I like being able to see everything on a level surface. I see the appeal of having a rounded edge that would make it more comfortable to hold and pocket, and reducing the bezel is a good idea, but I don't think this is the proper implementation. But at least it's something different than the iPhone in one regard.

Problem of bad headlines - the 200 Samsung employees is *just* for the screens as per the article.

Which i'd take means there are many more for the A series chips in the iPhone and iPad, some more for other Samsung components.

And that excludes the employees in Samsung's design team...

Yes, the bottom looks similar, but the similarities end there. Are Apple's contributions to the tech industry really so pathetic that Apple fans have nothing better to do than harp about minute design similarities?

Talk about actual technology, not where companies place the audio jack. I have never seen a group of people more petty than Apple fans. I'm embarrassed to even display my iPhone because of you lot.

As for the S6 Edge, it's only an experimental project for Samsung. It turned out to be a hit like the Galaxy Note series. Overtime, they will fix the glare issue and do something about the color distortions.
Remember, Samsung actually advances technology unlike Apple who just waits until other companies improve technology to their standards. Remember when AMOLEDs were worse than IPS displays not too long ago? Now it's extremely superior to IPS displays thanks to Samsung's massive R&D.

My goodness, that's my first time seeing that pic. I had only read about concessions they had to make to make it more Apple-like in design (such as the no longer removable battery). At this point they simply don't care, or they know the details of the law to the point that they don't have to care. You would think they woul not "go there" after the lawsuit, but they have no shame whatsoever. It is gutsy to not care that much.

I really wish Tim Cook, when introducing TouchID or when introducing Apple Pay, would have said something like "coming to the iPhone that you can order this week, or to a Samsung device probably in a year or so since they are watching this now." Oh, the laughter that would get.

Market caps is less than $200 billion. So for less than $200 billion, someone could buy all their shares.

Samsung makes 50 billion a year net profit after all expenses and r&d and pay roll and you think it will sell for 200 billion lmfao man you have no clue in how companies are worth.

if you wanted to buy out samsung they would ask for about 1.5-2 trillion dollars maybe more with all there assets in fabs and oil rigs

someone posted on annandtech that samsung already sold 30 million galaxy s6 phones and has broken even there biggest gs3 first month selling record.

You value a company on sales and assests not just market cap.

Maybe watch a few more episodes of shark tank.and for the record samsung spent 15 billion on the plant that is making 14nm cpus and you think they will give it all away for 200 billion lol just lol

OH MY GOD!!! THEY PLACED THE AUDIO JACK ON THE BOTTOM LIKE APPLE DID!!! THE HORROR!!!

1) Audio jack placement isn't "technology" and can't be patented.

2) It's not illegal to copy designs as long as consumers can reasonably distinguish which company made which product.

That's only if you include all the subsidiaries like its life insurance division, its financial division, its weapons division and the other 80+ companies that make up Samsung Group. Samsung Electronics alone makes somewhere between $20 - 30billion a year in profit depending on whether they have a good year or a bad year. Last year was considered bad, so they made close to the lower end of that range, but they're expecting to post stellar results this year with the S6/S6 Edge and their semiconductor division.

Yes, it's called fake media hype. There's nothing "magical" about the Apple Watch like there was with the first iPhone.
If you ever read between the lines of these glowing reviews, you'd realize the reviewers are trying so desperately to find redeeming qualities about the watch.

So... even when you're wrong, you're right. The fact that there are all these glowing reviews just proves your point. Some kind of massive conspiracy or sumthin'. Because rather than it be kinda good, it's just not and everybody's just lying. Because that's more sensible. Prove, factually and empirically, that they're "fake" (your word). Or GTFO.
Does your tin-foil hat get cold in winter?

At least Apple helps our environment with their packaging, materials, etc. They also donate to local causes, including national, and international. I don't recall Samsung helping the millions that needed it when Hurricane Sandy wiped out the north east.

It'd be too late then. Its best to copy and release the same time or before your competitor does.

Well, there's the part where I think Anthropogenic Global Warming is a fraud and a scam, but if you're playing the environmental-friendly game, Samsung has Apple beat. They've won tons of energy star awards for all of their products.

Samsung also donates heavily to charity.

And has Samsung ever done what you're insinuating? History has shown there is a very strong firewall between different Samsung divisions.

I always thought the value of a public traded company is the market cap.

Market cap is only a measure of what investors think your company will make in profit in the future.

Other wise, anyone can just borrow $200 billion from the bank, buy off Samsung and go sell-off their assets worth $350 billion and make a $150 billion profit.

That wouldn't make any sense.

That wouldn't make any sense.

to be more specific;

Market cap is the Sum total of the value of outstanding tradeable shares of a Company.

To value market cap you take total number of shares trading and multiply that by their current value

I'm not sure why this number keeps being brought up over and over again as some flag, since it has very little real world application.

most companies do not release the entirety of their stock to public trading.

you cannot simply go buy the entire stock of a company and expect full ownership of that company.

it does not take into account non traded stock. Nor do i believe does it take into account preferred stock.

it also has, just like stock, no real translation to company value, which is determined by the principle Assets - liabilities = Owners Equity.

Stock value itself, while linked to a companies performance, is more linked to supply and demand of that stock and doesn't reflect actual cost of that company.

should through acquisition of stock a company buy controlling interest in another company, they do not "own" that company, but have a controlling interest in the direction of that company. While this gives them ability to often push the sell-off of the remainder of stock for complete ownership, there are rules and regulations in place that make even controlling interest parties responsible to minority share holders for fair market value purchase of those remaining stocks (even non publicly traded ones)

what does this all mean?

STOP USING MARKET CAP TO INDICATE A COMPANIES VALUE

Yeah because TouchID or the new camera stuff they're working on with other companies did nothing to push forward the technology. Or combining TouchID with Apple Pay to make the first truly secure mobile payment platform. Or the new tiered battery in the MacBook. Or Force Touch. Or Digital Crown. Or motion co-processors. Or security so strong that even the NSA can't read our iMessages and complains about it. Or designing their own efficient processors. Or creating ResearchKit with 10,000 signups the first day which would normally take 50 hospitals a year to do. Or assisting the design of USB C to be more like their Lightning cable which is reversible and can carry video and audio. Or Swift. Or TrueTone flash which finally gives color balanced flash photos on mobile. And those are just the recent advancements, and I'm sure I'm missing some. Then you have the earlier features like capacitive touch, gestures, elastic scrolling, visual voicemail, displays that turn off when you put them to your ear, displays that rotate as you rotate the device, Siri, an amazing SDK and Xcode which makes it easier to build apps, or AirPlay which makes it easy to send wireless video, or making video phone calling a common, stupid easy reality with FaceTime, or the clickwheel, or getting millions of people to stop pirating and start paying for digital music, or the Newton and Macintosh and…I'm not even sure why I'm still replying to you. You're probably some kid who has no idea of the history behind all of this stuff. Android started off completely ripping off Blackberry during development, and then they quickly moved to ripping off the iPhone for launch. After copying massively Apple for years, Apple started copying back some of their features which were actually useful—even though many of them came from the iOS jailbreak community originally. Things like control center, notification center, widgets, all of that stuff existed in jailbreak before Android. Go research the history. Samsung makes good components, but oh please do tell me what they've pushed forward when it comes to phone software and hardware design? Rounded display edges? And everyone freaking loves TouchWiz. They just can't get enough of it! If you're embarrassed to even have an iPhone then don't have an iPhone. Why are you here? I don't go around writing on Android or Samsung websites.

no, "what investors think your company will make in profit in the future" is the investors forecasted earnings (based on their analysis). Marketcap is the cumulative value of all the shares (ie, the capitalized value of the company). The assets, sales, p/e, etc, or whatever the investors wants to base their analysis on impacts the marketcap (as you have already mentioned).

Yes, meeting Energy Star rating is one thing. But that's not everything in an environment. Also, having the community help out is not the same as funding for charity. Anyone can get other people to do the work for you.

I haven't insinuated anything. I just stated if you wanted to, that's how you could do it. I do not know what Samsung does or does not do in regards to this as much as myself or anyone else would "like" to think.

You do know that Samsung was going to use a fingerprint sensor from AuthenTec before Apple bought them out? We would still have mobile payments with fingerprint scanner even if Apple hadn't stolen Samsung's idea.

"Or the new tiered battery in the MacBook" - Doing wonders for its battery life, eh?

"Or Force Touch. Or Digital Crown." - Both gimmicks, and definitely won't catch on like the S6 Edge.

"Or motion co-processors" - And? Co-processors have been used frequently in the past to aid in specific types of processing like the PS4's ARM co-processor which aids in UI/OS functions. It's nothing new.

"Or security so strong that even the NSA can't read our iMessages and complains about it." - Considering a bunch of basement dwellers from 4chan hacked Apple, I'm more than sure the NSA can hack Apple and read what they want. Security and Apple are strange bed-fellows.

The rest, I won't even bother as you're just spouting useless gimmicks.

That's good...

Samsung gets all the praise, while LG only gets two sentences.... I see how this works now :)

Say what you will about Samsung, but they really do make some pretty good panels (and CPUs and SSDs). I had an LG panel in my rMBP which had image retention issues. Apple repaired it for free and put a Samsung panel in and it looks amazing with no retention whatsoever.

I thought Samnsung HDD/SSD's were now owned and manufactured by Seagate.

I agree, Samsung makes fantastic panels. I just bought a 64" Plasma TV from them that definitely trumps all other recent Plasmas by other companies......BUT, that's not the issue at hand really. They need to stop these shenanigans they do. On one end of the spectrum they are trying to trash Apple and lose them business. On the other end they want to collect money from Apple being their customer as a parts supplier.

They want Apple as a customer but at the same time they try to sabotage their business. Stupid Samsung.
