The point is Samsung is just a copy cat, period. They pride themselves in copying other technologies (not just Apples) and there devices should be band. There I said it.

My HTC One X (2 years old) has face recognition unlock already.

For the technology to really explode into mainstream devices the technology needs to provide a consistant improvement to security and user expereince. It needs to work effectivly most of the time and needs to be implemented in a way which is seamless and that is easy to adopt into daily regimes of most folks..When someone figures the best way to do that, face recognition will explode..Just as Touch - ID has kickstarted a movement among OEM's to get back to getting fingerprint recognition into flagship devices. Motorolla did not spur this movement back when they implemented it..But the seamless integration of authentech's technology into apple's home button turned everything around, Just as the original iPhone got everyone to focus on multi touch screens and no physical keyboards..

To borrow from colin talbot..

Its the implementation stupid !

And as we all know, Apple never steals, borrows, or in any way copies any other company.

Never.

Not once in their history.

Ever.

Also, I'm sure there are some Samsung employees that play in bands, so your wish is already fulfilled.

Was Samsung or Android ever really a choice for you anyway?

----------

Since the home button is the only "button" on most Samsung phones these days - where should they have put it. Or are you suggesting they add an element to make it awkward?

Motorola placed the scanner on the top of the Atrix. HTC put it on the back of the One Max. Samsung could have placed a motionless scanner under the screen. See how easy that was?

Ha ya you got me on that one... good idea though Samsung Festival...

Lawsuit coming in 1...2....

Why? Apple was not the first to use said fingerprint Sensor. Although much better than the Motos we had here at work.

Wonder where they got that idea from?
From Motorola? That is the first phone I had seen with one. But didn't like it much. Either way bad idea. Can't stand the fingerprint scanners on phones. But people like different things.

Edit: Just found this. Thought it was funny. Moto was first, but mocked Apple for doing it :)

Are you seriously going to buy that line? HTC MAX, GS5 all had finger print scanners because moto introduced them a few years ago? Apple and its acquisition of a certain company had nothing to do with it?

Lets just ignore all the crap about lawsuit and a legal copying issue as it just ruins the thread..Whosoever believes that apple can actually sue samsung because samsung decided to introduce finger print technology on their phones seriously does not belong to any civilized discussion regarding future smartphone technology..Lets look at technology objectivly..There is no indication that samsung is copying authentech's owned IP to do their version of the scanner..their are plenty of biometric sollutions out their for industry to take (granted that they may not be as advanced as authentech's (at the moment at least) )..and using it is hardly a violation worthy of a law suit. Just as apple has not filled a lawsuit against HTC for introucing a finger-print scanner they wont do it to samsung (Because it would be thrown out in 2 minutes)..

Eh, you stick your face in front of the camera, and it unlocks. What other kind of implementation is there? Mirrors?

Has to be implented in a way where it can do a lot more than that, was my point..How accurate was it (Just out of curiosity) and what about low light? It would be pretty cool if the phone by itself could recognize who you switches preferences accordingly..Would make a lot of difference on tablets for sure, with multiple family members..Thats why i hated the idea of waiving your phone around to get into it (Like the rumoured eye scanner thing) so i feel just as a way to unlock the device its not going to propogate or find resonate among mobile users..If it could use that info to recognize users and tie that up to preferences then it may be a winner !

Let me check whether it supports multiple users, but the accuracy is very good even in different types and levels of light.

Edit: My phone doesn't support multiple users, but my tablet does, and the facial unlock works on it too, and works very quickly for multiple users. There seems to be a step in the process that could be removed (selecting the new user on the lock screen, if changing user), but otherwise it's spot on.

I assume it will include a two-tone flash and 64bit CPU too?

No, It will come with a three tone flash, because more and bigger is better. And it will habe 32bit, because it's got no space to spare as it has to include a giant battery for it 50" display…

2 tone flash is confirmed (based on spigen pics on amazon) but i seriously doubt a 64 bit processor due to android..A 2K display is also a very strong possibility along with a 2900 mAh battery.

My HP laptop has facial recognition, using the web cam. It's pretty crappy. You have to be at just the right distance, and in the right position.

Nearly everyone that has quoted me on this has said that they had face recognition years ago. Well we had Fingerprint recognition too but it was crappy.

Technology evolves and eventually someone will implement it in a way where it will make your HP version look like a poor Instagram snapshot.

Are you serious ? Are they copying also the dual tone flash ?

It doesn't matter, coz:

1. Samsung users don't really care about quality of execution (otherwise I wonder how they'd tolerate the blue-ish screen)

2. Samsung users haven't tried iPhone 5s so they probably won't know how good things can get.

hence, "too little get that"

They are simply following the next logical step in making phone cameras better (which apple did first)..HTC M8 will also use the two tone flash, and i believe the upcomming nokia aswell.

You are right: they are following ....

I think its apple that deserves credit here for taking what was available to enhance the camera expereince and incoroporating it first onto its device..rather than bash samsung for following apple..

Android 4 has many of these features and in 4.4 face unlock actually does almost all of those things.

you can use face unlock to sign into different accounts on your phone. its pretty accurate and you can take multiple photos so that it has multiple frames of reference to get it right.

There is also no delay in the recognition. as long as your face is in the picture, its < 1 second to log in.

Low light is still a problem as it's camera based you require enough ambient light in the room for the front facing camera to be able to pick up your facial features.

all in All, faceunlock works very very well.
