Reliable mobile phone leaker Evan Blass this morning posted what looks like an official press image of the Galaxy S8, Samsung's first flagship phone of 2017.

Coming on the back of last year's Note7 debacle, the S8 represents a hopeful comeback for Samsung's smartphone business and is likely to be the biggest rival to Apple's radically redesigned "iPhone 8" expected to launch later this year.

I think this is what you've been waiting for. pic.twitter.com/FvYfsLOy0R - Evan Blass (@evleaks) March 1, 2017

The single rendered image appears to confirm the expected new minimal-bezel design and the absence of a home button on the front of the handset, with the larger edge-to-edge curved OLED display showing launch icons in the bottom corners of the screen.

On the right side of the handset is a power button, with those on the left side likely to be volume controls and a separate button to activate Bixby, Samsung's new virtual assistant, developed by the original creators of Siri.

It's unclear from the picture which model is shown, but the available display sizes of its Quad HD+ Super AMOLED panel will reportedly be 5.8 inches and 6.2 inches (the latter being for the S8 "Plus", according to Blass). The screen also teases the Galaxy S8 launch date of March 29, as confirmed by Samsung during its relatively low-profile appearance at the Mobile World Congress.

Further spec details have yet to be officially confirmed, but the S8 is expected to feature the Exynos 9 Series 8895 processor, Samsung's first chip built on 10-nanometer FinFET process technology, along with USB-C, wireless charging, iris scanning, a fingerprint sensor on the back, 4GB of RAM and at least 64GB of internal storage, with a 12 megapixel rear camera and an 8 megapixel front camera also in the offing.

Apple is widely expected to use Samsung-made AMOLED display technology in at least one of three possible iPhones to be released this year. Compared to LCD screens, OLED displays are thinner, lighter, and offer more flexibility, making modifications to a phone's form factor and geometry easier to undertake.

Added to these advantages are several performance gains over LCD panels, due to the fact that each sub-pixel in an OLED display is individually directly powered, which typically results in better color accuracy, image contrast accuracy, and screen uniformity.

With an edge-to-edge design, the "iPhone 8" is said to be similar in size to the 4.7-inch iPhone, but with a display the size of the 5.5-inch iPhone. Rumors suggest it will feature a 5.8-inch display with 5.15 inches of usable area, with the rest given over to a "function area" for virtual buttons. Other rumored features include a glass body, iris scanning and some form of wireless charging. Apple is expected to release its new iPhone line-up in the fall.

Update 3/2: BGR has posted images of a S8 handset powered on, calling the glass-backed device "a wonderfully sleek design" despite the fact that it retains a headphone jack.

Samsung always gains the upper hand over Apple with its spring phone releases. I don't know why Cupertino doesn't bring the iPhone launch date forward...

But they do, their launch date was already in autumn, way before spring. ;)

But really, one will always be both before and after the other, depending on the perspective. Unless they get together and pick the same date.

Seriously, if next iPhone isn't completely new design and major advancement from iPhone 6/6plus-7/7plus then Android will take gargantuan lead over iOS. Even now iPhones market share is looking more and more like Mac vs. Windows situation and we know what developers think about shrinking sales opportunities. I truly hope Apple will release totally re-designed flag ship iPhone and also at least one dirt cheap model so that iOS can truly challenge Anroid in every possible market. Dirt cheap models are important for the future of iOS.

I dunno about the "upper hand"

After the Galaxy S7 was launched last spring... did anyone really talk about it after the first few weeks? There was a big push at first... but then it wasn't news anymore.

Sure... people continued to buy Galaxy S7 throughout the rest of the year. But Apple had no problem selling iPhones. They sold about 200 million units last year.

My point is... I don't think it matters when Apple launches an iPhone related to anyone else's timeline.

Probably it's only disadvantage. Most people who criticize Samsung's S-series phones haven't tried them - they are actually beautiful devices and the displays are very clearly better quality than what Apple has been using on its iPhones.

Yes I agree. I was yearning over the Galaxy S7 Edge before I picked up my iPhone 7 Plus. But...it's just iOS man. I need iOS in my life.

I hope the iPhone isn't like that. I HATE curved screens with a passion. Sure they look 'cool' at first glance, but they literally slip out of your hands, they can activate elements on the screen just by your fingers gripping/overlapping the screen, they distort the image at the edges of the screen. There is ZERO benefit to them.

anyone else bothered by the stupid curved corners on the display? feels like it would look nicer if they just made the corners flat, almost making the corners disappear to the left and right edges

Yeah, it looks weird but it could be due to the fact the edges are curved and it's a direct view from the front. It may look better in person when the curvature of the screen is apparent.

Still think rear sensors suck. I don't care if it is a rumored ultrasonic fingerprint sensor it's annoying to have to pick up the phone every time it needs unlocking, even if it's just sat on the desk next to you.

com on m8. did you just say that Samsung is trying to look like Iphone8 which is not even out yet based on some leaks? I think you are getting paranoid really. You know this products are in development for years before they are announced.. right?
If anything i think this time will be the other way around (Since Iphone8 will come later than Samsung ). Good for Samsung. hope the Samsung phone has a jack though :)

Why fix it if it 'aint broke? In terms of the physical design, my perferred version was always the iphone 4/4s, but there's only so much you can do with a device that size which is largely a screen.
