Seriously, if next iPhone isn't completely new design and major advancement from iPhone 6/6plus-7/7plus then Android will take gargantuan lead over iOS. Even now iPhones market share is looking more and more like Mac vs. Windows situation and we know what developers think about shrinking sales opportunities. I truly hope Apple will release totally re-designed flag ship iPhone and also at least one dirt cheap model so that iOS can truly challenge Anroid in every possible market. Dirt cheap models are important for the future of iOS.
First of all... "market share" is a company's percentage of ALL sales from the previous quarter.
For instance... Apple sold 77 million iPhones last quarter out of 431 million total smartphones.
That gave the iPhone 17.9% market share last quarter.
But there's not a direct link between market share and developer interest. If there was... no developers would even bother making apps for the iPhone since it has NEVER had a significant market share. Right?
You're forgetting "installed base" which is the number of iPhones out in the world right now.
And that number is closer to 700 million iPhones on Earth. And that's what gets developers excited.
Second of all... you're also forgetting how the App Store grew even when the iPhones
didn't have much market share OR installed base.
Why would any developer build apps for the iPhone in 2008 when there were barely 10 million iPhones out in the world?
Answer: they knew they would make money.
And over the last 9 years... it didn't seems to matter
what the iPhone's market share or installed base was. The developers built apps for the iPhones whether it was a little or a lot.
I see your point... you think if the iPhone gets boring there will be fewer people buying them and fewer iPhones on Earth and developers will lose interest.
But here's my point... developers made apps for the iPhone when it had 5% market share and 20% market share.
And similarly... developers made apps for the iPhone when there were 20 million iPhones on Earth and when there were 700 million iPhones on Earth.
I cannot predict the future and thus cannot predict iPhone sales... but I'm having a hard time imagining a mass exodus of iPhone developers.
Developers were in the App Store when there weren't many iPhones in the world... so why wouldn't they still be there if there are
fewer iPhones in the world in the future?
