If Apple doesn't realise what a huge opportunity it missed by refusing to include Viv as an enhanced version of Siri in their products, there's not much hope left.

It's nearly 2017 and Siri is still not able to send a message or give driving directions without messing things up.

It's only a matter of time before these guys get disgruntled working for Samsung and leave to start a new company with a new and improved AI assistant.

I don't get it. Why doesn't Samsung embrace Google's own AI rather than spending money on developing their own brand of AI? It took years of research and development for Google Assistant and Siri to become what it has become now (though Siri is still pretty poor). What makes Samsung think they can better it? I think it would have been better if Samsung spent their money elsewhere rather than AI development.

The summa of Android's contradictions.

The only objective advantage the platform arguably has (Google's data trove and AI) will not be exploited in the devices of Android!s largest partner.

Google's reckless greed and willingness to betray the very OEMs that made Android such a behemoth, offering Assistant in their own phones only, led to AI fragmentation in Android, a situation that goes to Apple's advantage.

Pissing in their own pants for warmth, indeed.

I like how Samsung bought the tech a few months ago, and they are already ready to push into Touch Wiz / Grace in the Galaxy S8. Considering what a poor job Samsung normally do with their software, I have a very hard time believing this will be a hit for them.

Nevertheless, people don't seem to care. There has never been any doubt that Touch Wiz / Grace is one of the lesser software stacks added on-top of Android by manufactures. But they still sell the highest amount of high-end Android phones by a long shot. So users don't seem to care, they all care for the hardware and not the software.

Samsung doesn't want to just be a dumb phone for Google's services. Using their own digital assistant would allow Samsung to better differentiate their offerings from the rest of the competition.

The same way Apple uses unique software and services to sell highly differentiated hardware at higher margins. Samsung wants a piece of that pie too, because the market has spoken and shown there is no profit to be had in the world of android phones.

Samsung is constantly wanting to jump the fence and provide something different. They don't want to depend on Google and be locked into the cut-throat Android hardware sale.

But in the end that is just what they are, a Android OEM that sells specs do run Android, just like all PC manufacturers do the same with Windows.

Viv when the owner first turns the Samsung phone on: "Danger Will Robinson Danger."

Samsung needs a win after all the bad press, hope this works out for them. Maybe it'll give Apple a kick in the ass and put some work into Siri.

How can it be that Apple didn't have a 3-5 year non compete and first right of refusal clause with these guys? Amazing.

How do you know Apple doesn't have that or something similar? Also... Apple's long-term plans may not have aligned or dovetailed with Viv's.

I wonder if Apple should allow you to pick which voice assistant can work for you. Apple could put it in the settings section in iOS 11. Of even ask "Google / Alexa / Contana / Siri" by name before asking your request. That would be neat.

I don't see Apple integtrating other companies voice control products into iOS without some kind of compensation or marketing agreement. And the same is true for Google, Amazon, MS. These are all competitors to each other in some form.

I am hopeful that Apple will devote more attention to the details and improve the functionality and reliability of Siri, iCloud and it's other services. Surely they are paying attention. However, it almost feels like they live in a cocoon and are oblivious to their own shortcomings. Sometimes I think it's sheer hubris.
It seems like it takes them forever to get even incremental improvements to market.
On one hand I think scope of their offerings and trying to keep them all compatible is just such a huge undertaking. But on the other hand it seems inconceivable that Amazon, Google etc have stand alone Virtual Assistance products while Apple does not. Apple has invested billions in iCloud but it's services are still unreliable or slow at times. Siri has improved a great deal but it's hardly a new product so one would expect continuous improvements.
At the same time I am still an Apple customer. I'm waiting for a decent iMac refresh and hoping they don't apply a MacBook Pro pricing model (McScrewing) to the refresh.

Should we as consumers desire that Corporations have such agreements to basically stifle creators from creating solutions that benefit us consumers? (rhetorical)

To your underlying concern, how many years has Siri belonged to Apple?

Really don't see why Samsung keeps doing this to themselves.

For me personally, I want a clean Android experience and that means I want Google, not Samsung's "also ran" software.

Samsung doesn't own a mainstream OS so even if VIV is leaps beyond siri and Google Assistant they can't add much value as they can't integrate anything properly.

In fact one of the many S series improvements has been the dialling back of Samsung "features" and TouchWiz and more of stock Android.

S-Voice already integrates as well as Siri. It just sucks. So hopefully VIV will be as good or even better than Google Now.

Those mocking Samsung because of what happened to the Note 7 are deflecting.

I've said it many times - there isn't anyone that can really argue that Apple has done much with Siri since they bought it. Integrated it - gave it some bells and whistles, yes. But truly developed it? No. Apple has more money and resources available to them than any other company. Yet the original creators of Siri have now one upped themselves with Viv (from everything I've seen and read). There's ZERO reason why Apple couldn't have progressed Siri to be more in alignment with what Viv is capable of. They are now being lapped by other companies. And this isn't something you can say they are waiting to do something right. They already have Siri. Adding it to MacOS moved the needle... a fraction.

If nothing else, I hope that Samsung's devices with Viv pushes Apple to really put Siri through its paces. Siri was touted as one of the revolutionary selling features... a few years ago. You don't hear much about it now as a selling point.

Yet another gated voice recognition community.

Would be neat to see how well these could be if all of these tech giants teamed up and worked together. But, chances of that happening are about as likely as Apple and Samsung teaming up to release an iOS compatible Note.

Competition does push innovation, however, corporation and teamwork has done some amazing things in Human history too.

Yeah I guess you're more intelligent than people running one of the richest companies on the planet who make $1B every profit 10 days. You should be the next CEO. Hope you can handle the FBI when they come a-knockin.
lol...so said Blackberry at one time too.......no need to innovate.....look at all the money we are making......people love us....

I use it for those things every day. Sure it doesn't always get it right but most the time it does an excellent job, thank you very much
