Another nail in Apple's coffin. Apple has been failing now on a daily basis. Glad I don't have any Apple stock. It will soon be worthless!

Missed opportunity for Apple. They should have had Viv in the back pocket, but it's in Samsung back pocket.

So they're going to integrate this in less than a year and it's going to compete with Google Assistant? Sounds like a recipe for disaster. Hasn't Samsung learned their lesson about rushing things to market?

I like how Samsung bought the tech a few months ago, and they are already ready to push into Touch Wiz / Grace in the Galaxy S8. Considering what a poor job Samsung normally do with their software, I have a very hard time believing this will be a hit for them.

Nevertheless, people don't seem to care. There has never been any doubt that Touch Wiz / Grace is one of the lesser software stacks added on-top of Android by manufactures. But they still sell the highest amount of high-end Android phones by a long shot. So users don't seem to care, they all care for the hardware and not the software.

Exactly my thoughts.. The only people that care about the software are us iPhone owners.. None of this companies would still be around if Apple decided to up their hardware game a few years ago...

I don't get it. Why doesn't Samsung embrace Google's own AI rather than spending money on developing their own brand of AI? It took years of research and development for Google Assistant and Siri to become what it has become now (though Siri is still pretty poor). What makes Samsung think they can better it? I think it would have been better if Samsung spent their money elsewhere rather than AI development.

Probably the same reason why Samsung invests in TouchWiz, to differentiate itself from the competition. I think that's a mistake. Let Google focus on the software and focus on making hardware (that doesn't explode).

They can't. The Google assistant is only going to be fully integrated on Googles Pixel phones. It will only be available on other Android devices and iOS via an app.

That's a bit optimistic, isn't it?

That there will even BE a Galaxy S8?

lol siri, the thing is even more useless than a kids sandpit in the middle of sahara desert.

Wish I could dispute you but I can't. To quote my granddaughter: "Siri is so lame, even asking YOU stuff makes more sense, grandpa!"

Viv was probably really nice when Samsung purchased it, but if they treat it like they do the Android OS, by the time it gets released it will be bloated with their own tweaks that will make people not want to use it.

will viv be smart enough to tell you when your phone is going to catch fire?

None of this stuff is actually "artificial intelligence". It's voice commands for actions instead of keyboard/mouse/touch input for actions.

Siri can't set my alarm without an internet connection. She never understands me and is so dumb compared to Google's AI.

Works for me.
Just asked it to turn my lights off (about to leave for work), works great. I also ask it to play songs in the car. Works the vast majority of the time unless the artist has a very unusual name :)

I had the same thought. They did the same thing with Samsung Pay. I guess they need a way to differentiate their devices from the rest of the Android riffraff.

I don't see Apple integtrating other companies voice control products into iOS without some kind of compensation or marketing agreement. And the same is true for Google, Amazon, MS. These are all competitors to each other in some form.

Well, if people feel that Siri is falling too far behind, some people might leave the iPhone when the gap becomes greater. Apple makes most of its profits from the iPhone. So if they want to continue to be lazy with selling Macs, this will be less work for Apple to update some software on the iPhone instead.

Apple released Siri within their OS after about a year.

That's what I was thinking. They just made this acquisition. They are reported to still be investigating the cause of the explosions in their Note 7's.

I love my Samsung S7 Edge. I think it's a great phone in so many ways. But I had to put up with some QC issues to end up here: Two recalled Note7's, one of which did overheat alarmingly and one regular S7 loaner that also ran hot and erratically.

I can see them implementing Viv and I can see it working well, but not consistently across every S8 they sell. I hope not, but I anticipate some bugginess. Oh, I just saw a news article that says the release of the new phone may be delayed to April. Even that seems to be pushing it.

Siri is far from dead. Siri works well if you know how to talk to her. Google's varying forms of AI are somewhat better but the gap is not insurmountable.
