Interesting response from BB

BlackBerry has issued the following response denying reported discussions with Samsung:

BlackBerry Limited is aware of certain press reports published today with respect to a possible offer by Samsung to purchase BlackBerry. BlackBerry has not engaged in discussions with Samsung with respect to any possible offer to purchase BlackBerry. BlackBerry's policy is not to comment on rumors or speculation, and accordingly it does not intend to comment further.

Why buy them, Samsung? Just do what you do with Apple and copy all of their stuff. lol. Losers.

Didn't the Canadian government already squash a takeover bid by Lenovo for Blackberry? Why would Samsung be any different?

I believe it was because Lenovo is a Chinese compang. Samsung is (South) Korean... South Korea is a better ally.

I think we have seen this formula before.

Google/Motorola
Microsoft/Nokia

1. Samsung buys BB
2. SS keeps BB IP to fend off patent lawsuits
3. SS replaces it's own Tizen with BB OS (QNX)
4. SS shutters/sells all of BB internal manufacturing
5. SS converts existing BB customers to new devices running BB OS
6. SS kills off BB name and reputation

Its all for the money....

Why would Samsung be interested in BB ?

 Now THAT is a phablet :)

Simple fact, any forgein purchase has to be approved by the Canadian Governement before it will be allowed to happen. Since Samsung purchasing Blackberry means the dismantling of the company and laying off all their Canadian employees the Canadian government will deny this aquisition.

Unless Blackberry will promise to keep all canadian employees, assets and property and provide detail plans showing how this aquisition will benefit Canada otherwise It will never happen, since we all know how cutthroat Samsung is I think the devil has a better chance of getting something he wants than Samsung.

A good example of what is required for a forgein company to purchase a canadian company look up the Burger King aquisition of Tim Hortons, They had to promise to keep all employees, property and promise to move the majority of there cash holdings in Canada.

just my 2 cents.

In theory, Canada cannot prohibit BB from moving its HQ to another country. It would be stupid to move just to sell to become a piecemeal asset in name only. Samsung wants Knox to grow and BB could help Knox.

Probably a good thing for BlackBerry employees. If they don't get bought out they will continue to slowly die until they officially go out of business.

Also this could be how Samsung intends to compete in the enterprise space against the Apple/IBM co-op.

Samsung does have the Knox/Google deal to fall back on if this M&A doesn't materialize.

QNX. Not many people realize that this is actually the most popular platform for the underpinnings of most of the Nav systems currently in cars and going forward where the technology is only expanding to include more than just Nav, including Apple Carplay.

It is a huge space and they have a huge market share in it.

You sir are completely uninformed. Just because Blackberry is dead in America, doesn't mean it's not thriving in other countries. BBM is still the most used messaging app in the world and the most secure. It puts iMessage/facebook msg/kik/whatsapp/ (insert your crappy messenger here) ... all to shame.

I know it can be a subjective thing, but I'm not sure how you can say that BBM puts Messages to shame when:

Messages is so secure that the FBI complains about it.

Messages works inter-operably with both Messages (iOS) users or via SMS, platform independent, while BBM requires that a user download and install the app on their device to communicate. When I used BBM a few years ago I always considered that limitation the digital equivalent of two cans tied together on a string.

"We don't comment on rumors or speculation, which is why we're commenting on rumors and speculation, but will not comment further"

OK?

it is a good buy

Samsung gets a few things out of buying Blackberry

- Patent Portfolio ( what ever it is worth, probably 1 to 2 billion, but these days it is a defensive move)
- Most smart consoles in cars run BB's QNIX. There has got to be some value there, monitization wise. That is a growth industry given most cars do not have a smart console yet
- BB is rumored to have a few products in the over in the secure Home automation and Internet of things space. This is quite speculative but that need to be taken in to account.
- Android has run its course for Samsung. Their problem now is they can not provide a differentiated product in that space. Let us see how their Tinzen efforts pan out. This can act as their backstop if Tinzen does not take off. Or they can figure out a strategic direction by combining aspects of Tinzen with BB OS.

The original report had very specific price ranges, so there was something going on. BB is very careful in their wording that 'They have not engaged in any such talks with Samsung'. That does not mean Samsung did not make an offer or BB did not engage in a conversation in that.

Fairfax financial bid earlier was 4.7 Billion, this one is 7.5 Billion. It is not a lot of money for a company like Samsung if that is going to strengthen their North American position along hour axes.

All this tells me that these things establish a good floor of $7.5 Billion as sales price especially if we further hear that it is BB that spurned the offer.

I should probably buy some BBRY stock to back up the above convictions

Perhaps someone was just trying to bump the Blackberry share price to make a quick buck?

I thought I would add a picture of the price movement for the day.

I'm no expert, but to me it looks like it went up 2.89 throughout the day (I presume due to the announcement) and then re-settled again after hours -2.05 (I presume due to the follow-up denial). If you bought in the morning and offloaded right before close you could have made a few dollars per share. My theory is that the rumors were stirred to create this scenario.

Samsung loves to copy Apple. Apple buys beats and now Samsung feels it has to buy someone.

I'm joking, of course :) this is quite an interesting rumour.
