The remaining Blackberry owners are pretty hardcore fans. I would think that if they wanted that share of the market, they would consider keeping the brand/designs alive to some extent.

Agreed. My cousin is a die hard BB fan. I forgot which model he recently got but he uses it constantly. He doesn't like my iPhone nor his girlfriends Android. Though he does miss the trackball.

I would like to know what kind of patent that is worth $1 billion on its own without generating any profit

There's not "one patent", there are thousands. The value comes either from licensing fees, or alternatively from excluding others from using a technology. If you can tell customers "only we have features x, y and z" then customers wanting these features buy your products.

BBRY has $3 billion in cash right now. I doubt that $7 billion is "double what it is worth".

Ah, I missed the cash perspective. Your point is well taken. So probably $3b for the IP and BES server and $3b for the for the cash. Given Sammy has refuted the rumor, we shall see what happens, but BB value does not strike me as going higher so hopefully they will make a deal with someone. If Apple could make a deal, it would be worth the money just so they could finally get good corporate management software in place. I have not seen anything with IBM actually leading to "enterprise management."

It really does make sense....Blackberry still has a legacy and as stated they have an extensive patent portfolio. I just hope Samsung keeps those beautifully perfect keyboards.

The update in the news story has BB disavowing any knowledge or contact with Samsung, so its probably just a wild rumor that gained traction.

Well, honestly BB needs something. I know they have banks full of straight capital but that isn't what this industry is about. Hopefully they can get some home runs with their future devices and come out of the niche market.

its funny, cause the original leak was calimed to actually be from an insider source who was involved in the talks who was afraid to attach his name for it. I blieve there's evidence that there were actual talks. I personally believe that there were and that BBRY is doing damage control and denying it outright till they determine what they want to do

if it isn't for an acquisition, it could be possible that it's a cross licensing plan for patents? Maybe BBRY is going to license their keyboard patents to samsung or perhaps some form of backend platform.

Both companies need something to kick them back in line. BBRY's history of failure is well known now to the entire world, and Samsung is looking for answeres for decreased sales

I hope this means Samsung/Blackberry will start making some decent Android phones with solid QWERTY keyboards. The Galaxy S Relay was the last decent Android phone with a physical QWERTY keyboard, but its stuck on 4.1.2 Jellybean and is exclusive to T_Mobile in the USA only (if you get it unlocked it will work outside the US, but it's a major pain).

The fact that Samsung haven't made another Android phone with a QWERTY keyboard since, Blackberry's loss of market and Apple's lack of interest in phones with QWERTY keyboards just shows how niche that market is now, but some people still love them a physical keyboard :).

To be frank, a lot of my friends in the financial industry long for the comeback of BB devices. They absolutely abhor iPhones as cheesy teenager's toys and the still growing popularity of these among execs. And some of them would have "smash-your-phone" parties where they buy a dozen of iPhones and smash them against the wall, and they will celebrate with booze & loud singing. Serious.

I always love my iPhones & iPads but for business, BB seems to look the part (as business phone), and has the appropriate infrastructure supporting it.

The value isn't in the handsets because Apple now owns that market and BBRY can't compete with comparable hardware and their software has few Apps so they can't compete there.

But the enterprise security features can still be a goldmine for this company. I suspect corporate hacking is in its infancy. If large corporations get serious about security and Blackberry wins that market, Blackberry will have a resurgence.

BlackBerry shares rise 30% on the rumour then fall 20% on the denial. Blatant share price manipulation? Someone has made a lot of money from this.

BlackBerry is back baby!

My desktop is a Mac mini. My smartphone is the BlackBerry Passport.

The Passport is an excellent device.

BlackBerry has all the tools for the next generation of mobile computing.

This Samsung rumour was likely just playing with the stock market. BlackBerry's stock is volatile. Every rumour seems to move it. Experienced traders know this and use this opportunity to make some money.

Samsung's other parts also had a massive drop in revenue and in profits (about 60% for the whole company, 70% for mobile). That said, "Samsung is dying" is obvious nonsense.

Where do you make this stuff up?

Throwing random huge numbers out there?

This is just for Samsung Electronics.

I don't think people really understand how massive Samsung is.

Samsung Group is comprised of 59 unlisted companies and 19 listed companies.

They should keep those patents in Canada's hands.
Canada would never let this happen nor the U.S !!!!!

I have the Passport as my main device and iPhone as secondary. One of the best BB I've ever used.

Somebody really needs to do this already, and dissolve the company. It seems to be inhibiting much of innovation.

BlackBerry actually has all the goods for a next generation mobile computing company. Better than anyone else.

Your "inhibiting innovation" statement is extremely ignorant. I'm more innovative with my BlackBerry Passport than you are with your iPhone.

I highly doubt this, and your comment on the contrary is more ignorant than you can imagine. What are all the "goods" you speak of that blackberry has?
