Samsung today announced the launch of its latest tablet, the Galaxy Tab S4, which, like Apple's iPad Pro, has been designed as a computer replacement with productivity in mind.

The new 10.5-inch Galaxy Tab S4 is described as the "ultimate entertainment and multitasking assistant" thanks to the inclusion of Samsung DeX, which is the first time Samsung has built the feature into a tablet.

DeX is a docking solution that is designed to allow Samsung smartphone owners (and now tablet owners) to connect their devices to a keyboard, mouse, and monitor through a USB-C port, an HDMI port, and two USB ports. DeX on the Galaxy Tab S4 works using a simple HDMI adapter or with the DeX dock options and it offers true multitasking capabilities with users able to open multiple windows at one time.

Samsung is offering a $150 Book Cover Keyboard alongside the Galaxy Tab S4, which can be paired with DeX to transform the tablet into a PC alongside a Bluetooth mouse, but it will also work with any Bluetooth keyboard and mouse option.

Like other Samsung devices, the Galaxy Tab S4 can also be paired with the included S Pen, a stylus for taking notes, drawings, artwork, and other purposes.

Apple's iPad Pro lineup, comparatively, includes an optional Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil, along with the ability to pair third-party Bluetooth keyboards, but it does not support mouse functionality.

When it comes to hardware, the Galaxy Tab S4 is equipped with Qualcomm's octa-core Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB to 256GB of storage space that can be expanded with a microSD card, and a 7,300mAh battery that it boasts offers 16 hours of video playback, outpacing the iPad Pro's 10 hour battery.

The tablet includes a 16:10 AMOLED display, and there is no Home button or fingerprint sensor on the device, with Samsung instead relying on facial recognition and iris scanning for biometric authentication.

Other features include quad speakers much like the iPad Pro, Bixby integration, 13-megapixel front and rear cameras, and a fast charging feature that charges the battery to full in 200 minutes.

Samsung's new tablet is priced at $650 for 64GB of storage or $750 for 256GB of storage, which is on par with Apple's pricing for the 10.5-inch iPad Pro. Apple charges $649 for the 64GB 10.5-inch iPad Pro, $799 for a 256GB version, and $999 for a 512GB version.

Samsung is releasing the new Galaxy Tab S4 on August 10, which is just after the company plans to unveil its new flagship Galaxy Note 9 device.

Apple also has a major tablet upgrade in the works with new iPad Pro models on the horizon, but it is not clear when the company will unveil them. The new tablets could come in September alongside new iPhones or Apple could wait until later in the fall, perhaps hosting a separate October event for new iPads and Macs.

Apple's updated iPad Pro models are expected to offer a complete iPhone X-style redesign, doing away with the Home button, introducing slimmer bezels for more available screen space, and adopting Face ID and the TrueDepth camera system for biometric authentication.

If only Microsoft remade their os to be more simpi like osx snow leopard....it would probably sell more of those tablets...

Tablets have their place: 90% as entertainment devices, 10% as point-of-service devices for sales, warehouses etc. I had a Samsung tablet once, but it never got much use. If their pen/pencil doesn't match the Apple Pencil then they have no chance. That said, even iPads are unsatisfactory once you start doing more than a few taps and swipes and need to enter a lot of text.

iPad Pro is the best tool for illustrators and Procreate and Clip Studio Pro work amazingly well. Didn’t try Affinity Designer yet, but I hear great things. For illustration, it’s better than a laptop. Also, due to drag & drop, it’s actually better for reference gathering and management.

Not a dominant market, but just saying.

Someone needs to start making mid-range tablets to compete with the non-pro iPad. All there is now are high-end tablets like this and the iPad Pro, and the really cheap Amazon tablets. The 2018 iPad is pretty much the only thing in between.

iPad is the best product Apple made since the iPod IMO. I know that all of you will disagree, but it really has no real competition since it's launch in 2010. The entry level is cheap, even the smaller Pro is not that expensive. You can do a lot of work on it, the 4:3 screen ratio is the sweet spot and with the pencil it opens so many great possibilites. I love my iPad Pro. My mum is still using my iPad 3 and even though it's quite slow, it is still more useful than the Windows laptop she has.

I know there are a lot of 2-in-1 Windows devices and you can do more stuff with them, but I like having iPad & MacBook as two devices. For serious work I use my laptop, for browsing the web & reading & watching videos I use iPad.

Those Android tablets are just so bad, so bad...

Sketchbook by Autodesk never gets no love :D

Hmm.. seems outclassed, these days it’s a Kindle Fire Tablet for the kids or as a cheap but good device. And an iPad.
Shame we haven’t had a new iPad Mini for several years now, but that seems to be the norm with Apple...

Still I’m not sure I’d buy this Samsung tablet over an iPad or Surface.

Tablets are so yesterday. Hardly anyone buys them.

What? I use my ipad ALL the time, I have the iPad Air and waiting for the new iPad pro to upgrade. It's just that you only need to upgrade once every few years.

As for this new Samsung Tab S4 - the fact that it has 4GB of ram is sad. The 1+6 phone has up to 8GB, I would think a tablet would want to allow 8-16GB especially for "DEX" usage.

So insecure, clunky, last year's hardware, and never going to be updated. How's this compete with the iPad Pro again?

Clunky? Have you tried one yet?

Last year's hardware? Spec for spec it either equals or surpasses the current iPad Pro 10.5 especially battery wise. So you are saying the current iPad Pro is outdated?

Never going to be updated? Again how long have you had your Tab S4 to know this?

I personally prefer my Tablet in Android than iOS. Why? Because Android is more productivity focused:
  • Better multitasking
  • Real file management/browsing system
  • Mouse compatibility
I can get FAR more work done (and more confortably) on my Huawei tablet than on my iPad.

Just my opinion, as an owner of both system...

I think the real reason why you are skipping the iPad this year is because it won't fit neatly into your two signature lines.
Hah. I used to have three signature lines. Then hid them in a spoiler button but would get annoyed that the bottom part would get cut off. Then just decided to narrow it down to two lines: Apple gear and other gear. I only keep my most recent gear in the signature or I would have a paragraph.

This reminds me I need to add my new 4K display arriving on Friday. I've been building a 320sqft studio space in my basement for the past couple months that will be finished next Tuesday so maybe I'll do a video review of the display once I'm settled in—though I mostly bought it for the Xbox One X I'm going to buy this autumn so maybe I could do two reviews since it seems to be aimed at professionals as well as gamers. I'd like to get into doing video reviews on YouTube because I feel like I have something to add to the conversation and also because I want companies to send me free stuff, lol. I figure I buy enough tech as it is, might as well do reviews since I already have a nice 4K HDR camera, decent quality Audio Technica mic and know how to edit video.

The real reason I'm not upgrading my iPad is that I'll be buying a desktop Mac after I see what the Mac Pro redesign has to offer and that should be coming sometime in the first half of 2019. Depending on what hardware is on offer this autumn combined with what the Mac Pro offers I'll either get a high end 5K iMac, low end iMac Pro or low end Mac Pro with Apple Display Pro (or whatever they'll call the new one, personally I think they should bring back the Apple Cinema Display name).

Aside from the OLED display advantage you're better off with the Surface Go for productivity and creativity advantages. DeX is interesting but only useful if it's Windows 10 and Linux. Still better than iPad Pro though.
