Surprised they tout this as a powerful device while installing 4GB of RAM into this while putting 6GB of RAM in their own Note 8. Not sure why they put the effort into this using the specs it has. And while Apple uses 'just' 4GB of RAM in their iPad Pros, iOS is clearly much better at RAM management than Android. Odd timing for this release
It’s not the older chipset that bothers me, it’ll probably be fine. It’s the lack of ram. I agree it should have been 6GB of ram. Also not keen on the new aspect ratio. Although I tend to keep my iPad Pro in landscape I like the option of being able to use it in portrait.

The last time I tried an Android tablet, it seemed like very few Android apps were tailored for tablet use. This is one area where there seems not to be much real competition.
I agree. The app situation for Android tablets is better than the Modern UI apps for Windows tablets, but still woefully inadequate, IMO. At $250 brand new, the Lenovo Yoga Book (Android) is arguably the best value out there for something Android-based. The glaring weak spot is the apps though, and the greatest hurdle preventing me from replacing all of my iPads with it.

With ChromeOS tablets coming out, this is an admission on Google's part that Android tablets are being sunsetted. I think that Samsung is taking the approach of wanting to be (essentially) the only fish in a small pond.

I hear you all, and as much as I love my iPad Pro, I would not mind a better keyboard and the possibility to work with a mouse for certain tasks. When I sue the iPad as a light notebook replacement those two features would come I handy. Also, the multiple window flexibility (I know I can do this with iPad, but not two instance of the same app) are also a welcome addition.

I'm not saying I'll buy one, but I'm hoping some of the things I saw do come to the iPad sooner rather than later.

You could say the same about the iPad Pro. I could have got a windows laptop or MacBook Air for the same price I paid for my iPad Pro and the keyboard and the pencil. Yet I didn’t want any of those devices.

You could, but the point is that there are those options and the iPad is a decent tablet.

This Samsung device seems like it's trying to do too much, and most Samsung tablets aren't the best tablets.

[shrug] if you're in the camp that doesn't get things due to the reasons of "because it's Windows" or "because iOS", then this is the device for you!
a camp that says it can't get things done because it's Windows, iOS, desktop Linux, and macOS does not exist.

Doesn't Apple include in the iPads last years processor too? This years iPad will get A11X while the new iPhones get A12.

So...

So... false. The iPads are typically released (in the calendar year) before the iPhones. So when this years's Pros get the A11X, they're actually the top of the food chain.

Whereas the Snapdragon 835 is literally last year's chipset, as the 845 is already out.

Kinda surprised Samsung is doing this since the tablet market doesn't seem that lucrative nowadays and the margins are lower.

I think having purchased the 10.5" iPad Pro last summer I'm going to skip this iPad generation. I'm hoping the following generation in late 2019/early 2020 will have OLED @3X paired with iOS 13 that will hopefully have even more productivity baked in.

I'm of the same mindset. My 10.5 is a monster, and while it'd be great to have feature parity (Face ID), I'm fine with a 2-4 year refresh cycle on my end.

Maybe by then, Apple will be selling it's silicon cases again.

If the iPad is released at the same time as the iPhone or later, I am personally hoping for A12x myself.

As new iPad Pro needs face recognition to work in landscape mode it is highly probable it will launch after iOS 12 so A12X is possible. And current iPads sell well so no need to hurry for Apple.

I find it amusing when the Apple crowd tries to justify a competitors lack of current hardware. Seems disingenuous at best. How many Apple products are at least one to three generations behind processor wise?

That is actually false as many people buy them to use just for stock trading or banking. Always best to keep things separate.

I keep things separate with Secure Folder on my Galaxy s8+. No need for separate device. Tablet is so yesterday and bulky. May as well use my laptop instead of spending more money on a tablet.

That secure folder is not really secure. With Facebook built in nothing is secure. If you see no uninstall option for Facebook in your Galaxy S8 Plus then everything in that folder Facebook has access to even though it is disabled. Every single contact will start popping up on your Facebook Page asking you if you would like to add that person,etc..

Think you may not be familiar with how Secure Folder works in Galaxy. It is like an entire separate phone embedded in the current one. Inside Secured Folder there is no Facebook app running. I have different apps accounts here compared to the outer phone environment. I run all my critical apps here including a different business WhatsApp and email. If I use camera here, the pictures taken is stored in Secured Folder photo gallery not the outer gallery. I even set a different PIN to enter Secured Folder.

From the outer phone environment, using a file manager, the Knox disk partition of Secured Folder is not visible at all so there is no way my FB app running in the outer phone can have access to my (separate and different) contacts in Secured Folder. Now I don't worry about letting my family members or relatives temporary use my phone.

Does your secure folder have a contacts app to add contacts?

Like I said Secure Folder is like another (embedded) phone with its own environment. It has its own copy of contacts (accounts) which can be inward one direction linked with the outer phone contacts. Contacts added in Secured Folder are not visible/available outside.

And the main benefit is I can run another copy of an app in Secure Folder with a different login credential concurrently with the one in the phone but mutually separated in 2 distinct data environment/space.

When you add about 10 contacts to secure folder within a few weeks you will see Facebook asking you if you know those people and ask you if would like to add them
To your contacts list.

A laptop is bulky not a tablet.

More are buying tablets than laptops these days as the amount who need them are lower than they used to be.

Some can even cope with using an iPad for work.

That's not what this site says: https://www.statista.com/statistics...forecast-for-tablets-laptops-and-desktop-pcs/

Even though these are shipping metrics, there's been a steady decline in tablet shipments overall. Numbers are in millions.

Year | Tablet | Laptop | PC
------------------------------
2014 | 203.1 | 147.28 | 134.4
2015 | 208.0 | 163.10 | 113.6
2016 | 174.9 | 156.80 | 103.3
2017 | 163.7 | 161.60 | 97.8
2018 | 152.0 | 160.90 | 95.4 (estimate)

Apple still sold 11 million iPads last quarter while macs are declining more than its seen before.

These stats will obviously go up and dip over time but the way you can use iPads now it’s easy to see why more think they can do computer type work on them

I agree in that the iPad is best for casual users and for those that do basic computer work. Macs have been declining because simply they have been neglected. Apple's profit margins are greater on iPads than Macbooks, so I think it makes sense to continue to drive tablet sales even though the market as a whole seems to be declining for tablets. Also keep in mind the barrier to entry for a tablet is significantly less than a laptop.

Regarding computer type work, you really don't need an iPad for this as you can easily get a Chromebook or a Surface Go and accomplish the same (if not more). Once people and companies figure out their options as more alternatives come out, it will paint a different landscape where people desire the compromise between a tablet and a laptop.

Two points:
  1. Those same Apple products are also one to three years old.
  2. Those same Apple products are only then on the same level as current Android hardware.

Holy crap yes. Have we spoken about this before in the iPad accessories forum? I feel like every iPad case sucks. I miss the leather case so much. I'd buy the silicone case too because I have the smart keyboard but don't always use it. It's like there is so much cheap garbage on Amazon and the legit case makers don't want to compete with that so they just put out a few options. Also what sucks is it seems to be only the cheap Amazon cases that dare copy Apple's trifold design. My favorite one so far is this one and I wish it didn't have the pencil holder because 1. the Apple Pencil battery discharges when it's that close to the display all day and 2. even when the battery is discharged in the Apple Pencil it still somehow messes with the display and causes it to freeze up for touch inputs a random length of time <5 seconds at random intervals between like 15-30 seconds. It's super weird. Otherwise it's a good case, feels more quality than most (though a little rougher than the nice Apple leather) but is a little stiff when folding it back. Apple is just leaving money on the table by not offering these. I'd buy the hell out of a Cosmos Blue leather case to match my iPhone X.
