Wires had to be there. AirPods are a crude first step from wired to wireless. They are the equivalent of when mobile phones had antennas like this:
...
People said that about the notch. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Another reason they are poor for the price. I thought they provided great user experience?
Those galaxy buds won’t be better on a ten hour flight. Interesting spin. There are $4000 headphones that don’t provide your expected level of user experience on aircraft.

When I travel or commute I have Bose qc ii. I travel with a 25000 anker mah battery pack and don’t run out of juice.
And you will not have any issue of getting more than 10 hours of continuous use if you desire.
Some people wear noise cancelling phones for a full long haul flight just for the noise cancelling.

What is my expected level of user experience on aircraft? I never implicitly or explicity stated that Galaxy Buds would give anyone 10 hours continuous use, so I am at a loss to understand why you mention it. If for some strange reason I was considering Bluetooth headphones, I would expect a minimum of 10 hours use. However I clearly stated I consider sound quality and comfort the over riding considerations for headphones. I certainly wouldn't spend $4000 on Bluetooth headphones.

For the right use cases.

Myself, I don't travel, so I don't miss what I don't need.

Here are some scenarios where the AirPods shine for me.

In the morning, I use them to listen to podcasts or music when walking to work (typically about 15-20 minutes). It's quiet at 6 am, so there's no background noise to interfere.

In between my teaching periods, I listen to them as I do my marking. Again, I like that they are so light and portable that they fit either in my shirt's front pocket or my track pant's side pockets without making their presence felt. It's easy to take out and keep as well. I don't understand why people give it so much crap for its design, yet find huge ear cans that go around your entire head perfectly acceptable.

When I am going out, they slip into my jean's coin pouch just nicely. This solves the problem of where to keep my headphones without needing to bring an additional bag with me.

I have mentioned the comfort, and I really cannot give it enough credit here. Whether it be watching a 2-hour long Apple keynote, or simply catching up on shows on Netflix, they are so comfortable that I barely feel them in my ears. In fact, I have no qualms about leaving them in my ears even if I am not listening to anything. And no, they have not come close to ever falling out for me.

And there's also something about the case which makes flipping and closing the lid so addictive. As well as spinning it on the table like a fidget spinner.

I know I sound like the quintessential Apple fanboy, and how can I not be, when the AirPods have worked so well for me?

Correct, the QC iis will get me my 10 hours. Why torture yourself with earpods, airpods or any other non-noise cancelling headphones? YMMV, people do it.

Based on your above comments.

On a long flight, I like to be pampered with comfy noise cancelling headphones. Other situations the airpods are convenient.

It’s more like you won’t be using AirPods because they don’t seal and not because they don’t have ANC.
Everybody is different, but to me ANC is important on a long-haul flight. (to me more than 1 hour)

Those look “stupid,” but Apple’s AirPods are the cats pajamas? AirPods rank as one of the worst aesthetic design choices in the history of Apple.
Disagree and popularity disagrees too.

The AirPods look exactly like EarPods without wires.

The Samsung one ones look silly because the form factor looks huge in your ear holes. My opinion of course, but also the popularity speaks for itself.
[doublepost=1550419058][/doublepost]
So do Airpods, more so even.
Again, no, because the design is very classic. These look like giant circles covering your entire ear hole.
[doublepost=1550419161][/doublepost]
Lol and Airpods look better?

Don't be that person
"That person" is millions of people who have bought a classic design without wires. Yes, I think AirPods look a lot better than these.

Every wearable wireless bud has failed besides AirPods, which are so successful, they are still supply constrained over 2 years later.
[doublepost=1550419209][/doublepost]
Again, irrelevant comment because people who don't already have AirPods exist.
This is an Apple forum.

No they do not. They look similar. The AirPods tubular parts are significantly thicker than the wired version and this is why many people think they look silly.

Edit: I have seen several types like the Samsung Galaxy Buds and they look fine and one do not find oneself drawn to them. One doesn't normally notice someone is wearing them.

I’ve seen people wearing things like the Samsung earbuds on the tube. They look alright. The only reservation I’d have is if I’d have is if they would fit my ears properly. My AirPods fit perfectly.

Bluetooth over the ear looked silly as well. Having wires dangling from your ears looked silly (and the wires get in the way). Doesn’t matter what one individual thinks about AirPods. Don’t like them, don’t buy them. But they appear to be a success because Apple designed them to fit a “convenience” oriented market.

And that the Samsung ones probably have an animal tracking device in them.

I agree ANC is useful but that wasn’t the point. You can’t even consider using the AirPods because they don’t seal anywhere as good. One of the best alternatives to ANC are IEMs with comply foams.

Right, but the space the airpods take up and convenience in other situations are unbeatable to me. On a long flight, I would prefer to not have anything stuck in my ears for 5-10 hours. Again YMMV. Once I get off the aircraft, one airpod goes in so I can comfortably use the phone without holding it to my head.

Yes, there are products out there which are competitive with a 2-year old Apple product, which is on the verge of being refreshed.

Let that sink in for a moment.

The Beats X are more or less the same age.....You are really grabbing at air here lol. Why is it so hard to accept that Apple does not make the best products on the market in every category.

I dunno. I usually take off my headphones and put it in my pocket. It would be the same if I had wireless ear buds or neckbands.

I’m not sure what you’re even talking about here anymore. Im only pointing out the reason AirPods aren’t used often on flights is due to lack of isolation.

For myself and I am sure many others, the two considerations by far are sound quality and comfort. Everything else is a very minor consideration. Like, do they fold for travel, not a show stopper but a minor consideration.
Unless you are an Apple fan and move the goalposts to try and convince people that the inferior Apple product is "better" for them.

I dunno. I'm only going off your conversation about lack of active noise cancellation. But as far as the in-flight preferences for alternative headsets that satisify the individual, YMMV.

Lots of competition out there. Nobody has to convince anybody and buy what you like. 'Inferior' is subjective, 'better' is subjective. YMMV.

.

You forgot to say say in your opinion. For me they are more convenient. I have them around my neck all day at work tucked under my collar. I forget they are even there sometimes. I don't need to worry about losing them and they last my Whole entire work day on one charge. I work in Graphic Prepress in a Mac environment so it's handy to be able to charge them via Lightning if i ever do need to charge them. Sounds pretty damn convenient to me and all the while having much better sound quality, isolation and battery life.

Got tired of repeating it in every sentence, especially since opinions are cited as facts regularly.

Different strokes for different folks. For me the ability to use one AirPod while in a phone call and not carry anything around my neck makes the convenience factor very high. It’s the small package with no wires I like.

The Beats X are just one example, There are plenty of fully wireless style bluetooth headphones that have better sound quality, Battery life and isolation too if that is your preference. The Jabra 65T's come to mind. Once again my point is sure the Airpods are a nice product, but there are better products out there if you open your eyes and look outside that walled garden.

My point is the quick integration with pairing, the ability to use just one airpod, and the phone knows just one airpod is being used makes this a choice product for me. It's not about an exhaustive search of bluetooth products as @Abazigal has stated. The airpods work in different ways than other Apple and non-Apple bluetooth products. If I want isolation and total comfort I have my qc iis. The strengths and convenience of the airpods do not seem like they positives for you, which emphasizes there are products out there that should fulfill the requirements (whether it be price, functionality, isolation, sound performance etc) for everybody.

The airpod sound performance is good enough for me, may not be good enough for some people.

Other than the qciis and the airpods I have two other bluetooth headsets. One is a cheapo with long battery life the other, the Motorola s9, I've had for years and use them when I work out as they are sweat resistant with no wires.

Airpods are charged via lightning as well.

Everything is an opinion. Mine, yours, everyone else’s. It’s understood and implied, else every statement will have to be prefaced with a redundant “IMO”.

I most certainly do not see that declaration (of everything being your opinion) anywhere in your response as well.

Pairing is something that is done ONCE.
I have used several Bluetooth devices of various types and cannot say it had ever been complicated. I would likely never consider the simplicity or complexity of pairing when deciding upon a purchase, because it is only done ONCE and isn't difficult. If not obvious, RTFM :)
