But unluckily, they took a stab at Apple about the headphone jack (something they are rumoured to be removing from their own devices) and then released a phone that was dangerous, had it re-called and then released it again that was still hurting people and causing damage. Samsung's plan shouldn't be to copy Apple, but it should be to do their own thing while winning their customers back that they put in danger in the first place.

How did the Note copy Apple? This is fantasy land.

The battery fiasco was a there-but-for-the-grace-of-God-go-I moment for all electronics manufacturers. The Chinese add-on plants Samsung uses are part of the exact same network they all use - including Apple - for understock. It's a problem with universal issues with lithium-ion technology.

I hate Samsung for this copy practice, Samsung should not copy design of iPhone

I didn't say the Note 7 copied Apple, it didn't! It's not that they made a mistake, all companies and everyone can make mistakes, it's the fact that they recalled all the Note 7's and then sent a new batch out before solving the issue. It seemed that they were too busy trying to beat Apple's iPhone 7. The problem they may have is that issue can tarnish a brands name, will people think twice before they buy another Samsung phone? I don't know but it's possible.

I suspect the Note line may be rebranded, but it has such a cult following and was so well designed (battery aside), that it will certainly be back, and a hit. It fills a niche with zero alternatives (it's a Holy Grail product for reporters, for example).

I hope there a true stylus option in the upcoming Surface line: it's an absolute sweetspot form factor for many, and is absurd not to have competitors.

The problem arose when Samsung wanted to beat Apple to market with their new "7" line before Apple announced their new phones. The lineup was rushed to market. While 2/3 phones paid off, 1 of them cost the company billions.

I've defended Samsung in the past but even i have to concede this is getting silly now.

It's ok, you can defend them now too.

They already have a black shiny option, way before Apple. Apparently it's becoming slightly shinier.

This is a nonsense news story.

What's your source for that? The Note 7 hit at the same time the refresh has for years.

To be fair the Note line does look like a great device, if it's wasn't for Andriod I would have probably given it a go years ago. The stylus and features that work with it look good. If Apple did something similar I have to admit that I would buy it.

Would you buy a smartphone if its battery died at 30 %?

Samsung as rumored last month has announced the Galaxy S7 edge will be available in a new "Black Pearl" color in select markets starting tomorrow. The glossy finish, exclusive to 128GB versions of the smartphone, will inevitably draw comparisons to the Jet Black iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Samsung already offered the Galaxy S7 edge and ill-fated Galaxy Note7 in a somewhat glossy Black Onyx finish, so we will have to wait for actual photos of the new Black Pearl color to see the difference between the two colorways. Samsung said the all-black finish "radiates quality and luxury."The new color arrives nearly two months after Samsung permanently discontinued the Galaxy Note7 following battery-related safety risks.

Samsung following in the footsteps of iPhone colors is not unprecedented. Earlier this year, it released the Galaxy S7 in Pink Gold after Apple launched the iPhone 6s in Rose Gold last year. However, in Samsung's defense, it has offered some variation of a pink smartphone in select markets since at least 2012.

The new color follows reports Samsung's next-generation Galaxy S8 will not include a headphone jack, following in the footsteps of the Moto Z in June and iPhone 7 in September. The Galaxy S8 is also said to have a bezel-free display and virtual home button, two features rumored for Apple's next iPhones.

samsung copying apple in both color and removing the headphone jack in 1 month. Business as usual. The only feature samsung has created on it's own is the self exploding phone. Not sure if that will catch on though.

I think I should write a book on the topic of confirmation bias. I need some materials to start with:
  • Samsung copied the color black
  • Apple did not copy other phone manufacturers that had already removed the headphone jack

Apple had a shiny, black phone... the 3G. And the 3GS.

And a shiny white one, too. ;)

My point's more about trying to claim credit. I can't remember any sort of similar "I did it first!" posts on Samsung, Android, or Microsoft boards.

It's a very weird and unhealthy attitude that seems to infect the Apple communities I'm part of far more than others. Is it a marketing thing?

(I say this as a 90% Apple product user... I think they stand up for themselves without all of this essentially lying about history)

Are you using some type of alternate Internet?

How is the iPhone 7 Plus dual camera different from Android cameras?

For those of us who live and breathe smartphones, it's fun to poke Apple when it "invents" a feature we've been seeing in the Android space for years. Like when it "invented" bigger phones in 2014, or "invented" split-screen multitasking on the iPad Pro.

That is just one article from one website, and it only took 28 seconds to locate. There are many more on that site, without looking at Android Police, Phandroid, etc..

The fact is, both camps (Android and iOS) have zelots on both the editorial & fanbase, all raising flags when one does something first. At the end of the day, the competition helps us all.

What happened to Samsung being original? That's disappointing. I really liked how Samsung had it's own ideas and did things completely different from Apple.

Dang Samdung its such a copy cat...I don't know how they sleep at night...I won't own a thing that stinkin' company makes! I read somewhere that Apple may come out with a Red iPhone next year.....the crappycats are already starting to look for their Red color...
Please tell me you're a teenager. Please. No self respecting adult would write like that.

I've been asking myself this question, found no answer. Maybe a psychoanalyst can explain this primitive mob mentality. Everyone knows black phones and other black products have been produced in the past. Apple did not invent black products with the iPhone 7.

Imagine Bob wearing a polka dot bow tie. Bob wears it, and everyone is like meh...
Then Steve comes along a month later, wearing something similar but shinier and more glossy. Everyone is like DAYUM Steve that looks amazing. Then Bob pulls out his old bowtie from a month ago, and wears his the next day.

Don't you see why Bob is looked at in the bad light here? Especially since Bob is also taking out his headphone jack just like Steve did (first!)

What's the first black product ever manufactured?

What's his source? Confirmation bias most likely. He's heard other people repeating the same inaccurate information that he happens to agree with, so it must be true amirite? No sense in letting the truth, or a cursory glance at a calendar, get in the way of a good story. @malevolant was probably just caught up in the Note hysteria and assumed facts not in evidence. I've done it once or twice myself.

To be fair, it could be said that Samsung rushed to hit that yearly release date. Video game companies are guilty of the same type of behavior. Releasing to hit a date instead of releasing when product has been thoroughly vetted. But that's not to beat Apple to the punch. That's totally different.

Let's compare mythologies (Leonard Cohen reference):
  • Our god is not the first god ever worshipped - but it is the one true god.
  • Our phone is not the first black phone produced - but it is the one true black phone.
