Is there any data to back that up? I would have thought that the primary driver of screen size was hand size (where men tend to have larger ones) and vision ability (which isn't gendered, and would generally trend downwards with age).
Women also tend to have smaller pockets, and I find that the regular-sized 13 Pro is too large for many of mine, but on the other hand many women keep their phones in purses instead of pants pockets (specifically because women's pants pockets are always ridiculously undersized).
When I worked for Best Buy, it was 90% Women buying the Plus (now Pro Max) devices. Men like the smaller screen size and it fits better in their pockets. Women, however, have PURSES not pockets, and the larger screen size is preferred.
This hasn't been studied yet, but it's something I noticed at work over two years and being the go to guy for IT decisions such as which phone to buy, which computer, etc.
As for anecdotes: I can name one male in my family who has a Pro Max or larger screen iPhone (Me). All the others have the smallest screen option (including SE, Mini). Every female in my family has the Pro Max or Plus screen sizes (largest available). It's not even something they discuss, they just buy that.
And I have talked with them about screen size and the majority opinion can be summarized in a few brief statements made by these women. They were in response to a few questions.
- The larger screen allows me to see photos better
- Handles more text on screen so I can see what others said more without scrolling
- Also shows what I mean to say and not have to scroll as I am typing.
- I can watch videos about products I want to buy and who uses them and the screen is just bigger
- The larger device shows off what I have better to the other women
- Larger model always has the better camera, so I can take better pictures, duh
- Look, bigger is always better mwahahaha
- Words with Friends is just soooo much easier to play than on my boyfriend's phone
- Instagram is worlds different on a larger screen and I can see what others are up to with better graphics
- My husband/bf/so asked what I wanted, and I told him so he bought it for me, how sweet.
- I worked my ass off in college, so when I started making good money, I thought I should get the coolest one, which is obviously the best camera, screen, etc
Whereas the men's opinion, the same questions:
- It's too large in my hands
- It doesn't fit in my pocket right
- Too heavy
- Can't use it one handed
- I don't watch much video on my phone, that's why I bought a TV you idiot
- Who games on a phone? I have an Xbox/Playstation/PC!
- I'm only on Instagram to look at bikini models, and don't tell my wife/SO I said that or I will kill you
- I don't take pictures and when I do, I suck.
- I would like a larger screen, but money doesn't grow on trees and I have phones to buy for other people
- I'm worried I'll get the larger screen and regret the extra money I spent, for barely any extra space.
And here's a few opinions from both the women and men on folding phones:
- That's really freaking cool, but I feel I might bend it the wrong way and break it
- I wish I could bend like that, hahah! But really, my iPad mini fits in my purse
- I don't have a tablet, so why would I want my phone to be one? And for that money?
- Who uses a tablet other than kids? I've got a TV, you idiot. It's 100x bigger.
- It would be great to work on the go, I might change my mind, but the price worries me.
- At that price point, why don't you get a gaming laptop and just quit trying to carry everything in your pocket?
- $1500??? I could just buy a expletive iPad Pro the bigger one and fully load that
- The only thing that would enhance would be gaming. For that amount of money though you could just get a real gaming rig and download Steam or whatever.
- Wouldn't it eventually get something like stretch marks?
- So, I have to upgrade or something? Do I have to? I just got a new battery for my phone (iPhone 6) and I don't wanna spend however much that costs if mine works just fine.
- So, is the insurance gonna cover my dumbass dropping it?
You get the jist. It's a price issue. They'd be fine if it costs roughly the same as the others, and does more, but really it comes down to the cost vs what you get. If they could get a top of the line laptop or iPad for the same price, why waste it on a feature they don't need?
