Samsung really are scrapping the bottom of the barrel. When they have a commercial showing how the bending and flexing of the screen over time doesn't cause a crease, then I might consider it, but probably not because of the damage that flexing must inevitably cause to the screen and other components.

There is a better solution for too-large-to-fit-pocket phones. It is called mini.

Please bring it back Apple.

(And if you want to go an extra mile, iPhone nano could be interesting as well)

Sad. Very sad. When someone makes a compelling argument for a foldable phone, then I will look at it. I'm not opposed to one, I just don't see the point.
I have a Flip 4, the point is folding a long candybar phone into a smaller shape for your pocket. My shorts pockets aren't deep enough to carry my iPhone and I live in a warm climate...

For all of the foldables, it's big phone, smaller carrying package. I'd pay good money for a foldable iPhone. Think of it, an iPad Mini sized screen melded to your iPhone, and being able to put it in your pants pocket.

Nobody wants a foldable phone. Niche market, for a niche need. You can get an iPhone 14 and an iPad mini for half the cost of a fold
The definition of a niche market, means *some group of people* want it. I'm one of them.

I had a 13 mini, ugly screen and short battery life. A total waste of money.

Cue the people attacking Samsung while they cheered on Apple attacking Windows.
Samsung generally attacked iPhone users, while Apple attacked Windows. Windows is a product, not a human. Samsung attacked actual people. That's why their ads are so insulting.

This ad is not that clever. In the end it's insinuating that any non-folding phone user should be sad; not just iPhone. So if you are a Samsung user of pretty much any of the other dozens of phones that they sell, you should be sad too. Pretty interesting marketing strategy to make your own customers feel sad.

Apple has never made fun of iPhone mini users or MacBook Air users when advertising their flagship products.

Unfortunately, the power requirements of the iPhone Mini meant that the smaller battery went through many more charge cycles, so the battery degrades much more quickly. That's the main reason I switched from a 12 Mini to a 13 Pro.

Yes, but that doesn't mean it's a large market. Some people don't need all that extra screen space, especially men.

The Pro Max overwhelmingly gets sold to women, although the amount of men buying them has increased, including me.
But there gets to a point where the user has to be asked how often they need to switch between a tablet and smartphone, and unfortunately that answer is "not very often".

Is there any data to back that up? I would have thought that the primary driver of screen size was hand size (where men tend to have larger ones) and vision ability (which isn't gendered, and would generally trend downwards with age).

Women also tend to have smaller pockets, and I find that the regular-sized 13 Pro is too large for many of mine, but on the other hand many women keep their phones in purses instead of pants pockets (specifically because women's pants pockets are always ridiculously undersized).

It makes sense to have foldable phone if the goal is to get noticed with ... aaaahs and the oooohs :D
Perhaps but I mainly got it because I love watching video content on my screen. Plus, it works great as a GPS in the car.

So sounds like you're an advocate for choice? You want small mini sized devices, which there's clearly a market for but you should NOT suggest that folding phones shouldnt be an option either if there are OTHER people that want them.

Like you, I too prefer smaller sized ACTUALLY POCKETABLE phones.
Did I suggest that folding phones should not be an option ?
I do not think I did, please clarify, thanks.

In a new World Cup themed ad, Samsung has poked fun at Apple's lack of a flippable iPhone while promoting its own Galaxy Z Flip4.

samsung-flip-world-cup.jpg

In the ad posted on one of Samsung's Weibo accounts, Galaxy Flip phones can be seen as fans in a soccer stadium, themed after the 2022 World Cup. While the Galaxy Flip phones are cheering and flipping in the stands, a few smartphones, clearly resembling iPhones, remain in the audience, standing still with sad emojis shown on their displays as they look around at the sea of Galaxy Flip phones. Text at the end of the commercial reads, "it's time to fold together."

This is not the first time Samsung has made fun of Apple and its lack of a foldable and flippable phones. In an ad last month, Samsung made fun of how Apple users are always waiting for new features, "because that's what we do. We wait," the ad mocks a fake Apple employee as saying.

Until someone can show me a foldable phone without a crease or trough at the hinge point, I don’t care. Even then, I would love to hear an argument as to what a foldable phone would really do for me.
