I guess it’s innovative if marketed as a disposable phone. Jealous, hardly. Still on an iPhone 6. Will probably upgrade this year, but only to kick the 5g can down the road for at least 4 years or more. 5g almost as useless as foldable to me.

Will there be a Galaxy Map that can be folded multiple times an be put in a glove compartment or an envelope?
Honestly, scrolling and pinch to zoom “solved” the “fold” for the most part.
Sure foldable screens are kinda cool, and they’ve been looking for applications to use it on such as hand bags and folding phones, but the screens will eventually find a use case that makes sense.

If done right, these could be pretty great devices. I wouldn't jump on the gen 1 product, but there is definitely potential.

I've little interest in buying one of these early devices. But I am certainly glad companies are are exploring new tech and form factors. I can imagine buying a folding tablet in the future.

Undeterred by its recent Galaxy Fold un-launch, Samsung is apparently set to unveil a luxury smartphone early next year that can be folded down into a compact-sized square, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

Samsung's Galaxy Fold hasn't even been released yet
The smartphone giant is said to be collaborating with American designer Thom Browne on the upcoming phone, with the aim of "appealing to a broader range of consumers that includes those more interested in fashion, status and luxury than a device's tech specs." At the same time, the device will reportedly feature cutting-edge display technology and offer the nostalgic appeal of rejuvenating the flip-phone form factor.

The foldable phone is said to include a hole-punch selfie camera at the top of the inner display, while on the outside it will have two cameras that face rearwards when the phone is open and become front-facing when the device is flipped closed.

According to the paper's sources, Samsung aims to make its second bendable smartphone more affordable and thinner than this year's Galaxy Fold, although the launch of the successor device "may... hinge on how well the Fold performs after its imminent launch."

On that note, Samsung is said to have completed its redesign of the Galaxy Fold to resolve the multiple display failures that led to its delay. The South Korean company originally planned to roll out its $1,980 foldable phone on April 26, but was forced to delay the launch after several units sent out to reviewers broke during testing.

All of the issues were related to the device's screen, which was vulnerable to debris ingress. The new version of the Galaxy Fold, featuring several design and construction improvements, is now set to launch in September in select markets, with specific launch details to be shared as a launch approaches.

There have been some suggestions that Apple is exploring folding screen technology, but right now there are no rumors indicating Apple plans to actually release a foldable smartphone in the near future.

So, sounds like sammy really did “folded” the project. And with the new phone, sammy is going to bend it over instead. *hint hint* :)

Mac Pro
Pro Display
MacBook Pro 15
iPhone X
AirPods
HomePod
Apple Watch 4
iPad Pro
Apple Pencil

Nothing to do with being a fan boy... They just all work perfectly together.

All appealed to me. Own them all (New Mac pro will be a day 1 order) Only thing I remotely want of Samsung is their Fridge Freezers. Actually I do have the Samsung Smarthings, which is great - but they bought that company out.

I loved flip phones. There’s potential here if it’s executed right. Consumers like small, compact designs, but the caveat being what technology can it offer over say a larger display compared to a Note/Galaxy where it would attract the consumer aside from the ‘smaller form factor’. Battery life is another crucial feature that would be worth noting in a flip phone that _could_ make it attractive, aside from anything else Samsung includes.

Absolute majority of people only see one product- a phone. Apple have done a lot of innovation in other categories, take AirPods or Apple Watch for example, in the last 2-3 years. But for some reason, the same people, who, supposedly, position themselves as innovation experts, choose to ignore this and go with the low hanging fruit- bUT SaMsUnG hAd iT bEFoRE.

Um no, not a bit. I haven't seen anything to suggest that this is any more than a curiosity with no durability at all. I'd be jealous if someone managed to develop a foldable design that could tolerate more than a couple of days of use without deteriorating.

Younger Mac Rumors readers don't see the need for a folding phone because they've never used a flip phone. There is nothing like ending an angry conversation on a flip phone with a "See ya" **CLACK!!**

I heard a rumor that Microsoft is working on their own folding device that will use:

Magnetic Enclosure, 360-Degree Hinge

If the price is the same as the original then I don't think they'll sell many. But it will advance the tech.

Not sure if joking?

Samsung needs to humbly bite the bullet, like Apple did w/ AirPower & admit they bit off more they could chew and that current tech doesn’t allow for them to deliver on their vision for these devices.
Announcing something that isn’t ready & doesn’t remotely work DEFINITELY does not represent innovation.

Have they solved the basic problem of "Plastic gets brittle when it's cold?"
A great deal of the planet has this season we call "Winter", when things are miserable and the temperature plummets well below freezing. Most plastics do not bend well at these temperatures, in fact they tend to crack or shatter. As this season lasts anywhere from 25-65% of the year (depending upon location), it is a major consideration.
