I love how everyone is ******** all over Samsung for this yet they are at least tying to create something new instead adding new camera or technology that’s been out for years already.

And people wonder why this may be one of the lowest pre orders for a phone ever.

I think most people appreciate the tech, we are just looking for a value proposition and no obvious shortcomings. Right now, there is neither. In regards to phone pre-orders, Apple still does better than most, but obviously nobody really cares about smart phones anymore. Apple realized this a few years back and has pivoted to wearables and services instead. That is where we should expect growth for now. iPad should see growth also as they look to replace macOS users. The overall iPhone user base just needs to keep growing, which it is, to gain users for other products and services.

How about a screen that folds into an airplane?
Foldable screens are cool, but it’s still looking for the right application.

I've always thought "What's missing from my current phone that I really want from my next purchase"

Turns out the answer is a huge crease down the center of the screen.

Don't forget pants that sag to one side thanks to carrying two phones in one pocket!

Fanboys so jealous other companies are being innovative while Apple hasnt introduced anything appealing in years.

Are you serious? Samsung didn't even invent this crap and they obviously suck at implementing it too. Could you imagine Apple announcing a folding phone, rescinding it from reviewers, then allowing it to fade away...then announcing another? Seriously, only a fanboy would even make a statement like you made lacking the context that Samsung flopped on its face with the last one. They've made maybe 10-15 watches so far too, and not one of them has been successful let alone "innovative". Hell, they couldn't even name their payment system anything but [blank] Pay, THAT is how innovative they are.

Like Apple has always said they don't need to be first they only need to do it better. iPhone was not the first but they did it better and so on.

No one, and I repeat, no one, wants a folding phone that is likely to break just by folding it over a regular smartphone.

I don't care if you hate Apple, but this is fact.

Samsung never gets tired of figuring in countless halls of shame, for half cooked products like this bendable display.

Apple would never look at doing anything as silly as a foldable display... :)

Like Apple has always said they don't need to be first they only need to do it better. iPhone was not the first but they did it better and so on.

You often hear this sort of claim, but I don't think it is very true or meaningful. Yes, sometimes Apple introduces a feature later, but significantly better, such as their facial recognition system. Sometimes they are first, but fall behind. Sometimes they are late, but not better. These things are true of all the big tech companies.

Siri was not the first voice assistant, but it was significantly better than Google Voice Commands. So the idea that Apple was not first, but was better was true. For a time. Then Siri fell significantly behind.

Apple maps was not first nor was it better. Fast and wireless charging were late with Apple, and only came up to industry standards before falling behind again.

The fact is that the entire industry moves forward together, with companies periodically pushing themselves forward on certain features. If folding mobile devices get a real foothold in the industry, Apple will jump in too, and will sometimes be better. But not always.

Which is why I don't understand people who, though corporate loyalty, object to the introduction of products like the Fold. It costs us non-buyers nothing (or next to nothing), but has the potential to start a run of improving tech that many of us would want to purchase. If companies actually did just wait to make established tech better, we would be well behind where we are now.

It appears that Apple is doing more than just "looking at" it. It appears they have been actively working on it. My understanding in partnership with LG.

Until anything is official, you just never know. I’m sure Apple has plenty of folding prototypes they are working on, they just may not end up reaching consumers. It all depends on if there is a compelling use case, if it’s better than what we have today, and if there are no obvious quality issues.

How many of us have tried using a case with a folded flap that protects the screen when folded?
It’s a nice concept that most eventually give up on and just get a case that protects the back and a glass screen protector for the front. It’s a hassle.
Now imagine that same hassle but with usage and wear issues. It’s not the future. Not for phones.
