Why is Samsung continuing the stupidity that Apple has pushed for too long?

Because, as it turn out, CEOs of corporations are human beings with delusions of grandeur and giant egos. And if those egos get bruised all hell breaks loose. What's best for the company and its customers becomes secondary to the "Want some of this, fracker? Well come and get it!" mentality. Or the children's game called "I got last touch in!" in the back seat of the family car on the way to the amusement park.

Interesting article that posits the patent system does more harm than good, and that it should be completely thrown out. (The side effects of NOT having a patent system would not be as bad as many think, it says.)

http://www.theatlantic.com/business...or-abolishing-patents-yes-all-of-them/262913/

Not sure I agree entirely, but given that the patent system was originally supposed to ENCOURAGE innovation, and given all we hear about these days is patent squatters just waiting for someone else to innovate so they can sue the heck out of them, I'm inclined to think the system at least needs a revision. Apple is guilty of this as well. It's an arms-race: a big company like Apple or Google or Samsung or whoever cannot afford NOT to buy up patents, even if only to avoid being sued by whoever else might buy up the patent before them.

Here's a This American Life episode about the same topic:
http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/441/when-patents-attack

This argument has literally been around since the 1800s. Fact is the patent system is supposed to encourage disclosure (that's the public benefit), which is then supposed to encourage innovation. So first, if we didn't have a patent system we wouldn't know who invented what, which is apparently important to both Apple and Samsung.

On damages, when I look at the most litigious industry, which happense to be phones, and then I look at a GS3 or a iPhone 5 it is hard to believe that somehow innovation has been deeply hindered by the patent system. If anything, cycle times in new phone and features releases are absurdly fast.

"I'm suing you for suing me for stealing your stuff!" Whaaaaa! It's time for Apple to cut all ties with Samsung and patronize other vendors.

The patent system is indeed broken. Back "in the day" - a company filing for a patent would actually have to have a working model/demo/fabrication to apply before it was approved. Now - all it takes is a sketchpad and a lot of vague references.

i hate the fact that when i wake up every morning i see my 32inch samsung television. I hate it so much that I put black tape over the logo. :apple::apple:

Your little mind is easily manipulated by Apples propaganda. You probably believe apple was the first to come up with the functions and features they've patented. You're quite pathetic actually to let these giant corporations manipulate you to such extremes.

They're both starting to look like children in some petty is not/is too! argument and now they're both telling mom. Are these companies run by grown men?

Both make stuff. Stuff is useful. The end. Please consider developing your own identity... your favorite brand or football team is a poor substitute.

So let's see...We have the:

"Apple started the "suit wars" and Samsung is just protecting its own" people....

"It's all a corporate ploy to brainwash the public and take your money" people....

"Apple sued for something entirely different so they're right and Samsung is wrong" people.....

"Let's just get rid of the entire patent system" people......

"Let's just all smoke a joint and get along" people.....

Did I miss anyone?

Yeah, I totally see Apple going bankrupt with $600 billion in the bank.
Apple doesn't have anywhere near $600 billion in the bank.

Its market value is over $600 billion, and that can disappear overnight.

What they have is a little over $100 billion in cash and assets.
More than enough to sustain them for a few years if something catastrophic were to happen to their stock price. (Highly unlikely)

Can't Appe just buy Samsung and end it.
Not this again...
Apple doesn't have enough money.
Don't confuse Samsung's mobile division with the parent company. Samsung is much larger than Apple.

Why is Samsung suing over FRAND patents?
Because they can. FRAND =/= Free. Apple still has to pay or risk being sued.

(Some) people here are so much institutionalized by apple that they would always side with them, does not matter if they are wrong or wrong. :p

waiting to see the 'copy what samsung did memo.'

oh wait that was 'copy what apple does memo', from the gift horses mouth.. doh

Me too. Doubt there are any internal Apple documents that reference Samsung so as to copy their design like Samsung copied Apple. They're suing over standard technology like 3G and LTE.

Apple is the biggest and most bestest at everything because Steve is god!

Yeah, the "Sitting naked scrolling through threads just to look at avatars" people ...

Er, maybe that's just me.

I think we can all agree on a couple of things:

1) The patent system sucks in its current state....then again so do a lot of government programs and systems.

2) Corporations (and any business not qualified as not-for-profit) are in the business of making money. Don't know why we should fault them for that.

3)Samsung and Apple make products used and loved by hundreds of millions of people around the world.

4) Samsung and Apple have each had a uniquely profound impact on mobile technology.

5) Regardless of the outcomes of these suits - the consumers life/choices won't change much if at all.

Therefore - instead of spending your time looking for conspiracies or hate-speeching about one company or the other either A) do research so you can make an informed decision/argument or B) shut up and live your life.
