The things Apple sued Samsung for were not trivial. They were essential contributors to Apple's trade dress. Samsung "borrowed" those items to confuse the consumer into equating Samsung products with the iPhone. The fact that these were additionally patent violations compounded the offense.

In summery:

- Samsung copied from Apple, and Apple copied from Samsung.

That's what it boils down to.

This is essentially the Windows vs Mac OS X argument from 2007.

It'll end the same way: A settlement where both parties carry on as normal with very little change (if any) to the product, and a hell of a lot of money lining lawyers pockets.

Samsung just needs to go hell, I am not buying any samsung stuff ever again...

Absolute rubbish. Apple sued to beat on a serious competitor. Would they sue me if I bought out a similar device that sold 100 units locally?

The answer is of course not, it's an undeniable fact that Samsung was singled out because it is a huge force in the technology sector, with the power to damage Apple.

Isnt Apple suing over the same trvial crap stupid?

These kinds of comments always make me chuckle. You can't just defend the patents that you feel are major and then just ignore the patent violations that are "trivial". You could potentially end up losing the ability to defend any of your patents. The way the legal system is setup, you have to vigorously defend all of your patents, no matter how "trivial". It has nothing to do with being petty or litigation happy. It's just the way it works.

Can't Appe just buy Samsung and end it.

Apple can't afford to buy Samsung. And even if it could, the current management would have no idea of how to properly run such a large, diversified company.

----------

Why is Samsung suing over FRAND patents?

Because Apple is using their tech and refusing to pay the requisite fees.

.... with technology stolen from Japanese manufacturers.

Samsung and LG are cloning crooks with zero regard to business ethics. I avoid South Korean electronics for that reason.

Not many people realize how Sony and Sharp were market leaders in television a few years back... With consistent growth and innovation... When Samung decided to rip them off till they didn't see any benefits of driving innovation...

Samsung initially partnered with NEC to develop a lot of their early technology.

All companies "steal" to some extent. Apple from Xerox. Microsoft from Apple. etc.

Can't repeat the same story again... And again... And again...

Samsung just needs to go hell, I am not buying any samsung stuff ever again...

Samsung is banned in my home and office since 2008... Mainly for their ****** after sales service...

And so are LG and Hyundai...

How were Sharp and Sony innovative again?
You do understand the next big thing for television is OLED, which Samsung and LG have the highest % of patents, right?
Sony and Sharp lost the TV market because Samsung's yearly R&D budget is more than both Sharp's and Sony's annual profits combined. In fact, Samsung's R&D budget for 2012 is $42 billion, which is more than half of Sony's yearly revenue. Sharp and Sony can't keep up with Samsung. Moreover, labor wages in Korea aren't as high as Japan's, so Samsung could make better quality TVs at lower prices. It has nothing to do with "stealing."

I just love how Apple fanboys proclaim that they're boycotting Samsung and other Korean tech. It's quite funny.
Here's a hint, almost every single electronic in the world uses Samsung technology. Even your precious "apple-designed A6 processor" was made using Samsung 32nm fabrication technology. The ONLY reason why iphone 5 is as fast as the galaxy s3 is because of Samsung's fabrication tech. That's the reason why Apple keeps crawling back to Samsung. Maybe when intel designs their own fab tech that matches Samsung, it'll be a different story. For now, if Apple wants to have processors that match the Samsung flagship phones, they're stuck using Samsung's tech.
Either directly or indirectly, you will help Samsung when you're buying electronics, especially Apple's.

Just reading threw these posts and I must say apple fanboys are sure strong these days.

I have apple products but when I find something that suits my needs better I will go. No harm no foul. Other people love apple and would probably kill if they told the customer to.

With that being said. ALL companies steal ideas. Apple has done this and I'm sure they will continue to do it like all other companies.

Like said earlier, why is it when apple sued everyone was for it? Now when Samsung does it, everyone thinks its wrong? Hippocrates????? Ya think?

I've also noticed in these forums lately and from reading other articles people don't seem to praise this iPhone like they have the other ones. To me the 5 looks like a glorified 4S. Posters are saying this phone will be the next greatest thing. It's nothing. Same old 4s with a little faster speed and slightly larger screen. Move along nothing to see here.

It is seriously difficult to argue with people who have a very narrow field of vision... And I dont have time to waste with stupid people who bring in the fanboy argument... Goodbye...

Cool, thanks for assembling them.

Haven't really delved into them but....

The first two are LTE patents that appear to be meaningful to the LTE standard (data transport formats and techniques), and probably will have FRAND implications.

The feature patents probably are all up for debate. Most of them are purchased from other companies. And of the ones actually assigned to Samsung themselves, two of them actually cite Apple patents, ironically. (that's more funny than meaningful; besides, I have no law training so it's not like I'd know if that matters)

LOL... Narrow field of vision? You mean closed-minded? Just like how you said all Koreans are copycats?

You are pretty misinformed. First of all Samsung never stole any technology from Sony. Samsung and Sony televisions were produced as a joint venture (Samsung owning the majority) known as S-LCD until about 10 months ago when Sony decided to let Samsung to buy up the its stake in the operation leaving only Samsung. Second of all Samsung is the leader in OLED technology. No one has anywhere close to the amount of capacity to oled panels than Samsung. That required a ton of research and there is no one to steal this from as they are the ones that performed the research. D

I think what most people don't realize is that Samsung and LG innovate in ways that the average consumer won't realize. If there's a wall in technological progression, Samsung and LG along with other tech firms would try to figure out how to get past the engineering hurdle.
For example, check out the LG optimus G. Normal cellphone battery lives could only be used for 500 recharging cycles before there would be noticeable degradation. LG Chem found a way to increase the power/volt and upped the recharging cycle from 500 to 800.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe this is a breakthrough in battery tech. No one has been able to break the 500 recharge cycle barrier.

The first 2 are 3g patents. LTE patents will be a separate lawsuit.

Indeed. What that korean-hater does not realize is that the reason why Sony failed was because it let Samsung do all the R&D, buy Samsung screen tech, rebrand the Samsung TV as SONY TV and charge a high premium fee to the consumers, resulting in a far more expensive TV with the same picture quality.

I agree. Except.. Google doesn't make phones. Nice try tho! Love the enthusiasm you got going on there!

nice try at tactical intellectual evasion but you failed cause you know exactly what i mean..

phones that run google android POS system tend to be cheap and crappy.. and even the highest quality android phone is not built half as well of beautifully as the iPhone..

sony is a perfect example of a bungles brand.. very very sad

Sigh... I am sorry but I really have much work to do... I really don't have so much free time...

For a start you Korean "Lovers" should read in depth as to how Samsung started and what was their core competency... Manufacturing (fabricating) parts to your clients specifications doesn't make you the innovator... Yes they found ways to realize their clients dreams, but the in-depth R&D was the clients blood and sweat... Then once you have some in-depth knowledge of how businesses work then maybe we will talk... Good bye and good night...
