Well, it’s official: the iPhone 6 will not have a larger display. For a 4.7” screen, it would need a 555 PPI. If Samsung could not increase their PPI beyond 441 for the S5, in fact they even lowered it by a little (and let’s not forget they design and manufacture their own screens, thereby lowering component costs), then Apple will certainly not be able to do so while keeping their high profit margins on their flagship product. I guess we’ll have to put up with the 4” size for at least the next 2 years...

And that's exactly what they said when rumors of the iPhone 4 and iPad 3 started. And they were wrong.

Competitors come out later with the same thing but less attention to all the details Apple commits to, and they never get questioned.

Unlike some Apple users on this thread who don't pay attention to details like the fact that the S5 is using local encryption as per my previous post

So why can't Samsung COMBINE the Gear Fit and Gear (watch).....

That's what I'd like from Apple - not a phone in watch form or a health band....but a TRUE smartwatch that does the health stuff (innovatively) and has its own set of features.

I don't need to make calls from my wrist. I would love to securely pay for things from my wrist though.

All-in-all this seems a smaller update than the "S" updates Apple gets railed for....a "Samsung" like fingerprint sensor (in that it works about half the time and is better left un-used like a majority of Samsung's "innovative" features), marginally faster processor and more megapixels.

All about implementation my friends. Hopefully 2014 is the year we see some Android competition.....Samsung seems to have left the door open. I'd love to see the HTCs, LGs and Motorolas of the world take advantage.

these phones take 2-3 years to bring to market and the parts makers shop their wares at trade shows and to everyone so everyone has an idea of the features in upcoming phones. no one is copying anyone

Are you freaking serious? Really?! Samsung's phones take considerably less time to bring to market than you think they do.

Curious how the demonstration of the fingerprint scanner didn't include the obvious, which was to try it with a different finger - not just the two that were registered. It's almost as if he didn't want to show it failing.

Now will someone perform a real test of the thing please, and take down this non demo video.

"The world's first mobile phone with a heart rate sensor"

eh..

You could read the review on that page:

Not to be trusted. Gave one star as no stars is not an option....

by Ambulance technician

I am a serving ambulance technician, and I compared this app to the equipment I use at work. The app ADDED sixty beats per minute to the true reading. If I had a high heart rate anyway, this app could have the effect of convincing somebody who may believe this is to be trusted, to tell a medical professional that they have a hugely high measured heart rate. Please don't anybody use/believe the readings given.

Tried a 5C this weekend

Had occasion to use my wife's iPhone 5c this weekend. Gotta say the screen on it (4") feels too large for my taste. 5.1" for the Samsung? No thanks.

Locally where though? Just on the filesystem?

People watching the 5s keynote made no difference to the complaints about privacy so I don't see what your point is there. I was stating that nobody is asking the question compared to when Apple announced there's, not that Samsung haven't said about it in their own keynote.

Am I wrong in assuming that you were seemingly taking a potshot at Samsung while trying to "exonerate" Apple.

People have different expectations - fair or not from different companies. But more importantly - just because someone questions one company doesn't mean they are obligated to question another.

Some of the comments are funny. Forget the Gear. The Gear Fit is pretty much what some people here have been "asking" for from Apple and yet they are still complaining. Why? Because it's Samsung. Because Samsung was inspired by Apple's non-existent rumored wearable?

No, the gear fit is about 10-20% of what people are asking from Apple.

Woopde freakin doo - it works 50% of the time and is more trouble than its worth.

Apple (breifly) stores the user's fingerprint data in the processor chip itself. If something is secure enough, why try to make it MORE secure at the expense of implementation.

"Apple's may work better, be easier to use, secure and more reliable but Samsung's is EXTRA secure (while being more difficult to use and less reliable).

Local encryption means nothing if the feature is turned off after the first day with the phone....as most of these Samsung features tend to be.

While this is MacRumors, I'm glad this site occasionally posts articles about direct competitors to Apple as well.

Let me re-phase that for you.

"While this is macrumors, I'm glad this site occasionally post articles about Samsung as well."

There are many devices mentioned at mobile world congress today and we only get Samsung news. Samsung is not the only game in town.

I would guess at minimum 6 months. The phone itself can be in a pipeline for years - but the real trick is working with various carriers/etc to get the software side and some hardware to "play nice" - and different carriers have different requirements. That can take longer than you might imagine.

Or because I know people who've got malware on their Android phones.

You mean those props who visit porn sites, or deliberately download stolen games files or films or apps, and then turn that little feature that blocks content from unknown sources to Off. Or the ones that hack their devices and install custom ROMS etc.

Oh THOSE sorts of people.....

Hold up hold up hold up.... I just read that it is waterproof, no mentioning of that in the story though. Thats very interesting

Edit: usa today said water proof, i guess it is water resistant.

No, the gear fit is about 10-20% of what people are asking from Apple.

The gear fit is another in a line of fitness bands available on the market now.

10-20% is kind....I'm not asking for the fitness part, I expect it.

I'm asking for a whole lot more from the iWatch than this.

Bring on the Nexus 6 and Google's smartwatch. Besides Apple, they seem to be the only company with great devices.

Lame. These incremental upgrades are just not worth it. I wish Samsung and Apple would actually innovate.
