I understand the idea: a device that's small in your pocket... but expands to a larger screen.

We could have phones shaped like this:

Z3qL9KU.jpg

Is this necessary though?

Again... I understand it... "It's bigger on the inside" :p

It just seems like something that sounds good in theory... but might fail in practice.

Some of these concepts have two screens... one on the outside for you to use quickly with one hand... and a 2nd bendable screen on the inside that is much bigger. It just seems like a lot of complexity. (and cost!)

It would be unfortunate to get a device like this... and then realize that you spend most of your time using it in the closed position. At that point... you might as well have a "regular" smartphone!

I also wonder about the actual mechanics of the device. Does it lock in the open position? Or does it remain floppy like an open book? Example... is it rigid enough to hold in one hand like a tablet and swipe/type with the other hand? Or do you have to lay it on the table to use while open?

Lots o' questions need to be answered!

Comparing Apple and Samsung is like comparing.... well apples and pears. There is a slight difference between brands, technologies and actual products.

I expect the first few generations of this to suck. The only reason to release it is to be the first.

why are iphones more expensive than ipad pros btw?

Price is determined by what the market will bear, not necessarily just the raw cost of the components inside.

Everyone needs a smartphone, so people are, on average, willing to pay more for a device they carry on them at all times.

A tablet is less integral to one’s daily routine, so people aren’t willing to spend as much on one, therefore Apple charges less.

Just the free market at work here.

Smartphone screens are tall & narrow. If you unfolded one you'd end up with a square aspect ratio screen. Not sure what that would be good for. Certainly not for looking at pictures or video.

Perhaps the tall/narrow fad will come to an end and phones return to sensible aspect ratios; the foldable design allows for more display of content without adding to the size in your pocket/bag.

Lol, please explain the physics of that...

Essentially, you’re claiming that phones could be twice as thin as they are now, but for some reason choose not to, or describing an impossible feat of physics, or....??????
Because the folded phone would have 2 half thickness batteries in the same volume.

And the screen would be very thin.

There would be twice the area for 2 circuit boards, so you could have components only on one side, for example.

Nice to see someone trying to differentiate as well as developing their own technology. I'm sure there will be bumps in the road, but I for one miss my StarTAC

Samsung been talking foldable phones for 5 years now and still nothing. Only reason they keep bringing up this phone is they have nothing to compete with the new iPhones coming. The S9 is a bust and the Note 9 is a niche product. Samsung has to come up with a smoke screen to keep the Samsung Defense Force hyped up until the S10........
That is simply disingenuous.
Samsung has been talking for years about flexible, foldable displays. Only recently Samsung has been talking about an actual foldable phone. And when Samsung Mobile's CEO is saying they will launch such a phone soon I see no reason to doubt or question his statements.

I’ve used it. And most of the customization so to speak is useless. iOS comes customized to work and to be fast. Android has ten thousand settings to get the phone to where you need it. But hey, to each own.
True. I used ios and couldn't stand how restrictive it was omfg

We all know Samsung will be the “first” to do it. For their bragging rights.

If apple does it, they will perfect it, and do it right....but not anytime soon.
Apple won't make a foldable smartphone. That'll be just embarrassing

They are rushing in order to put their brand name first. Xiaomi, Huawei and Oppo have also announced foldable phones in 2019 so it's an impression/prestige race now, rather than producing something that will actually be useful.

Its not useless if you know how to use it. And ios is locked down. That's one reason it stays optimized. Think dude. And i don't see why yall brag about having less features. If apple did it, then all of the sudden it matters

Sorry but that's just BS. There are things Apple also does that I don't find useful. But Samsung takes the gimmick to a whole new level. They go by "Me first" philosophy. They see that someone else is going to come up with that foldable crap and now they try to rush it out. What could possibly go wrong, lol.
As for iOS being locked down, it all depends from what angle you look at it. For me it have all things I need and it does them well. But for some others it doesn't. So that is totally subjective.

Soon we’ll hopefully be able to angrily slam our phone shut after an argument. A vital experience that’s been missing since I got the first iPhone.

Quickly pressing the side button, or the “end call” button doesn’t have the same effect.

You can still throw it. That just work.

I don't see how apple could perfect it.
They have no relevant IP and experience in developing such devices and by 2020(the year Apple is rumored to launch a foldable phone) Samsung should be at the second or third generation.

Samsung will be first because they invest a lot of money in research and development(more than Apple actually) and because they don't just assemble phones, they design, engineer and manufacture a lot of the the components that go into a phones like the Screen, camera sensors, RAM, Storage, batteries, modems, SOCs, even a new magnesium alloy which could be used to make the phone's frame etc.
I don't understand why it's so hard for apple fans to acknowledge Samsung efforts to bring new and better technology(even innovative) to the market(which is generally available to be used by other phone manufactures as well).
Why must Samsung be mocked and taunted on this site with every single occasion no matter the subject.

Realistically speaking there is no way Apple could even have any hope of developing a foldable phone without the help from display companies like Samsung or LG for example.

1. You still can't install apps on YOUR device from anywhere but the App Store

2. You still can't downgrade YOUR device OS when Apple decide to slow your device down

3. You still can't load music or videos on YOUR own device without iTunes.

Totally locked down and closed sourced.

I use a Mac. That's what Apple does right. The iPhone and iPad and Watch and TV are locked down and self respecting tech person should not use them. Only grandmas.

With over 2 million apps in the App Store I have no desire to install some shady apps from the dark corners of the internet. You on your device? Be my guest.
I have had no slowdowns and I don't keep a phone for generations. I upgrade every 24 months. I have friend still using iPhone 5s, 6, 6s and they are totally fine. Wish I would say the same for Android devices, if you lucky you would probably get only 1 OS update (after 6-12 months)
I wan't to watch the video. I don't care what player is playing my video as long as it does play well. Most phone users are not tech freaks.

If these are the sort of reasons you are able to bring up then yeah, terribly locked down OS lol.
