Reality check: even if Samsung did introduce fully bendable screens in 2017 like the video, they would do so knowing that they couldn't possibly produce them in any significant volume. When Apple adopts technology for their products, it has to be something that can be mass produced on a scale that completely dwarfs their competition, so the "bleeding edge" type of things like bendable screens with low yields just aren't practical.
It doesn't have to be something mass produce for apple to implement it. They could easily sell it as a limited edition 2,000 dollar phone. Apple fans would still buy them.

Oh my gosh - you're right. I am sure they haven't even thought about that. I am sure that they've been working on the screen with no consideration to batteries and components for the rest of the phone. You should totally call them! ;)

Wouldn't be the first time .... I mean 1.5 hours usage from a pair of bluetooth earbuds....

TBH, like what always happens, Samsung will be first to the punch with a feature without a use or problem to solve, and then Apple will implement the same feature in a near-perfect manner a bit later.

Without a battery and electronics to match... the usefulness of bendy screens is even less than bendy straws.
Very true. Without a battery and electronics it's just... well it... yeah, it's just a screen. Literally just a component of a device. It would probably be more useful with a frame as well. Although I agree with your point about a part being useless without the other parts, I'm not completely sure why the point is being made. Seems self evident. /s

damn Samsung. If they pull this off it would be amazing. Smartphone on the go and unfold it at home for a tablet.

Next week...

"Apple Rumored to Launch Fully Bendable Smartphones in 2020"

I find it interesting how so many assume one of the largest tech companies in the world doesn't have prototypes just like this in their R&D labs.

Putting out concept videos like this is smart marketing meant take ownership over the "idea". Apple never has and probably never will produce videos like that.

Nice concept Samsung.

It remains to be seen how durable (and practical) those things will be. I have a hard time believing that it wouldn't develop dead pixels/screen distortion within a month of two of folding/unfolding the screen several times a day. If they can achieve this in 2017, kudos to them. But shame on them if they release it knowing it will have problems, just to look innovative.

As for Apple, they don't do concept videos for unannounced products, but they do fill patents...

Apple have beaten them to it.

They produced a bendable smartphone a few years ago in the form of the iPhone 6.

Whether that's a good thing or not, I will leave for others to ponder.

And for Apple's big debut.... 2017 iPhone has THREE stereo speakers. Innovation, here we come.
You guys are so easy to placate. These concepts have been around for years and Apple has many patents on them too. Apple has their own working prototypes just like these. Then only difference is that Apple doesn't release or leak photos like this to get people excited. That;s Google's job and apparently now Samsung's too. If Apple ever releases something like this it will be because they've tested it internally for months or even years. It won't be because a bunch of internet commenters got excited over some concept pics.

I'm not a fan of holding an Edge phone. It just doesn't feel comfortable to me or that I have a good grip. They are nicely built, but the design doesn't grab me.

You are supposed to grab it!

While I applaud new ideas, everything is fine for what I do now and working.

What I would like to see is to be able to use the phone as a mini projector.
Since there is already a lens in there and double lenses have been talked about maybe it can be done?

This screen technology will not be in production in volume until 2020.
Gimmick meaning a needless technology or that it can't be built in mass production?

I think none of the above apply. You'll notice how thick the one side of the foldable phone is due to the requirement to bend the display without an acute angle. It is doable and it is coming (already in Samsung phones anyway).
[doublepost=1465319119][/doublepost]Here's what I learned from the video:

1) Apparently foldable phone guys make women horny
2) The roll out phone guys make women easy and forget how horny they were for the foldable phone guy

Nice sexist crap, Samsung/

I could be tempted back to Samsung if these ever become a reality!
I was thinking the same thing. If this rumour is true, Sammy are going to kill Apple's 10th anniversary iPhone celebrations stone dead! This makes next year's iPhone 8 seem obsolete already! And you won't see an Apple version of this idea until years down the line of course. This is true innovation at work, not just Sammy copycatting anymore...and I have to admit I think that's history now too. I have to begrudgingly give it to Samsung and Android in that they've taken the technological and innovation lead out from under Apple's feet!

Pablo - yes, we do know what Apple is doing - VERY LITTLE !! Timmy has been CEO now for 5 years and what have we seen that has been on par with the previous game changing products? Timmy's magical pipeline of innovative products that never arrives. My belief is that Apple is at a critical inflection point this WWDC - Timmy's constant babbling about what is coming is not cutting it anymore for many of us. I hope we see some real substance next week, otherwise confidence in Apple will continue to drop.

well... In the mac side, all the line have bieng clearly improved...

the OS X had improved a lot too.

IOS had improved a lot too.

Iphone 6 was a hit...

everything it's going well,

Good for Samsung, and it takes a lot for me to say that about a company I despise. I used to be a die-hard Apple fan, but Apple has been creatively bankrupt for years and now the chickens are coming home to roost. With all of those billions spent every year on R&D, they don't seem to be going anywhere. Apple, in my opinion, is the new RIM.

Hope this is true. Would be pretty neat. But bet the first gen devices will suffer many issues as they see real world wear and tear from daily users.

No kidding. Given how many people can't even take proper care of charging cables, I am imagining these bendable phones will be subjected to some pretty hellish levels of carelessness in short order.

I hope Apple is not sleeping at the wheel. The lack of substantial updates on iDevices and Macs seems to point to that.
That is what I always feared once they decided to venture on too many things. Watches, possibly cars, etc. Too much and they might have been paying the price for it.

I've not read all the replies, but isn't this just an update to Microsoft's Courier concept from a few years ago?

I do like the idea, but looking at that concept don't you have an issue where your front screen is getting scratched up on the table whilst you're using the device in tablet mode? Also for it to be balanced both halves need to be the same thickness with the 'top' half containing housing two screens and the 'bottom' half containing a screen plus all the internals. That's going to be quite a thick unit when it's folded.

Funnily enough I think the second concept thing they show at the end is probably more feasible. Rolling is much better than folding if you don't want creases when you open it up.

Right. I remember how no one here believed Apple would release a smart watch that didn't best every other smart watch out there on battery life. Surely the battery would last for a week. Right?

Tim Cook drives innovation and creativities so well (?) lol sorry, but cant hold myself laughing.

we are still here reading each other's jokes only because forums.samsungrumors.com doesn't exist.

Apple has nothing more than larger and larger iWhatever with further and further stick out cameras anyways.

I don't want to use Apple anymore, but I am using it and watching this samsung ad on this got darn Apple forum. wtf

We all know Apple is dying, we cried. And the next morning, that got darn CEO is still doing this "innovation business".

Where is our help, gosh!
