Always. Steve Jobs would always introduce the competitors product, then say what the problems were, how Apple fixed them, why their version is better, and introduces the latest and greatest. Apple didn't invent the smartphone or the tablet or the MP3 player.. They simply made the best versions and redefined the space.
And that's what Samsung did with the smartphone, I fail to see how them adopting an apple philosophy gets all the fanboys knickers up in a twist.

Huh wtf how is this even possible

Samsung calls their version of bendable OLED displays, "Youm". Here's an explanation:

http://www.oled-info.com/samsung-youm

They've been showing it off for several years now. The problem with actually using it is two-fold:

1. Production quantity. IIRC, Samsung said they didn't expect to be able to make more than about 40,000 displays a month at first, which would severely limit the number of phones using it. (Just means I'll need to really work hard to be first in line - grin)

2. Bend life - At first, they'd only last through a few hundred ~180 degree folds before starting to lose pixels. Everyone's been working on solving that. Samsung in particular has been filing patents for their case designs which are kind of V-shaped from the side... allowing the fold itself to have a greater bend radius.

I only hope they don't use Tizen for their first models. Although I'd be really tempted anyway :)

Haven't we been hearing about Samsung folding displays for years now? Wake me when this is more than just a concept.
I guess your AAPL position won't let you sleep for a while. So you may see real products in the while.
Just a joke, no offence intended

I'll believe it when I see it. On the other hand, I fully expect tech like this to show up at some point in the future. It would be a shame if it has to come from the likes of Shamesung. Unfortunately it seems Apple is too busy with social issues and gimping customers at the low end with mediocre storage capacity to focus on the 'next big thing.'

He used a cute nickname. Bless...

Samsung's first venture into new territories can be a hit or miss. I'll watch with enthusiasm, but I highly doubt I'll be an early adopter of this.

Still, it's very exciting news for technology in general. And the potential is great.

Someone has probably beat me to this but "While not bendable, Apple's 2017 iPhone....." Well that's odd because the iPhone 6 was well bendable and I have one as proof lol.

You do realize this is a forum where people can actually watch a video labeled 2014 (actually released in 2013) and decide Samsung is just trying to be first. As if they came up with this idea 3 weeks ago. Same forum where the article clearly states this rumored product would be an experimental test case to gauge reception, yet we get comments like this... wait, PSA: Careful, head might explode from this insight. You've been warned... like this: "This IS bendable, but its anything BUT cool.... I already have something that bends... its called a wallet." What does that even mean?o_O:oops::(

As you pointed out, Samsung has been talking about folding displays for years. Maybe they've worked out enough kinks to take it beyond the concept stage, but not enough to have a mass market debut. Hence the test case rumor. Might be getting close to the time to wake you.:)

Samsung has a history producing unique gadgets that few use until Apple or others come along and make the technology work.

Not sure why others like this but I think its just a terrible idea. Flexible screens are good and I'm sure there will be use for it but the video shows total crap. If that was on the market right now I would feel bad for the people buying it.
So sad to see Samsung trying to do a MOCKUP video that is NOT cool at all. If mockup can't get you excited then I doubt the real thing will.
Or is it just me who has a taste for elegant things? Because this is not elegant solution at all. Gimmick at best.
Flexible screens will be amazing in other areas, not phones or at least not yet and not in the way this video shows.

And the last product in that video? OMG, really? You will see how impractical this gimmick is as soon as you hold it in your hand.

This is a really cool concept that, once sufficiently refined, could add genuine utility.

Before everyone starts criticizing Apple over this, though, keep in mind a couple of things. First, any work that Apple is doing in this area is secret, so they may be every bit as far along on this as Samsung. Second, Apple's philosophy has always been to wait until technologies like this are highly refined for the end user before releasing them. This is in contrast to Samsung, which releases tons of interesting products without a well-defined use case. One could even argue that Samsung's curved-screen phone fits into this category, as many users will tell you that Samsung didn't devote that much attention to what value the curved edge would offer to consumers. Simply put, Apple isn't always first to the party, but it often has offered a much more polished product once it enters. The same could be true here.

What most of us are saying is that if this is developed correctly, phones will not be phones anymore. In other words, it is a potentially a new line of products. Of course it wouldn't make much sense in phones as they are now.

True, but the problem is:
1) Have they refined cloud services? (iCloud is pathetic)
2) Have they refined smartphones? (see iPhone 7 rumors; iPhone is still great but pretty soon Samsung will dance around it)
3) Have they refined desktops? (see pathetic MacMini, and Mac Pro. I give you that iMac is still pretty great)
4) Have they refined laptops? (see the pathetic MBP line. MB is nice but for $1,700 is not that great as a refinement)
5) Have they refined smart watches? (I think they are on track for something, but they're focusing too much on the bands, and it's hardly a revolutionary product)
6) Have they refined music streaming service? (Apple Music... please...)
7) Have they refined the television? (I love my ATV4, but it's far from being a revolutionary product. Granted, the TV industry IS the bottom line problem).
8) Have they refined Operating Systems? (Up to a little bit ago, yes. I think iOS and OS X are still the best around, but we're seeing an increasing number of issues).

...Not to sound like a fan boy, but you are naming situations that happened under Cook. Cooks problem is he keeps trying to invent, not reinvent, rethink, and "think different".

Edit: I also do not disagree with you on any of these points. The lineup has become cumbersome. Steve's main thing was focus and not copy anyone else. Apple keeps trying to be something its not. It needs to refocus on what it's good at. Focus on what sucks in other products, reinvent them to become the template for other companies to rip off - and most of all, make it simple, simple, simple.

Your points:
1) iCloud is Pathetic. What is it? A google copy? A dropbox? What is it trying to be?
2) In my opinion yes they have, although I do think no body style change is suicide.
3)No; but iMac is fantastic.
4) Not at all. Customers are not buying them either if you look at their latest report.
5) No. Terrible UI, Slow, Feels clunky and is a useless add on product.
6) No. Terrible UI, Slow, Feels Clunky.
7) No. Absolutely not - Playstation Vue is the king of this.
8) Yes.

I wonder how Samsung will implement battery life? Maybe two batteries?

Maybe. But the device will probably be huge compared to a one screen phone. And you will rarely use it in the unfolded space. So assuming they do use two batteries they should have no trouble getting the current smartphone 1-day of life.

Well of course I am bringing up stuff that was under Cook. He's been the CEO for what, 5 years now almost 6?

I predict a massive recall ...
there's no way these phones will be durable.
Overall the whole concept is silly. When you bend something fully it often (not always) leaves a crease. Even cloth often does that. So, there goes the elegance out the window. I predict this tech to work in areas when you need curved or wrap around display as I think its great. Bendable? For everyday use? HAHA, not now and not in next 5 years. Maybe one day but for now, not a chance. Samsung will once again come on the market with something silly (just like their dual edge displays) just to be first but it won't be used much and it won't have the elegance and simplicity the consumer wants or will benefit from.

Just because the tech allows it doesn't mean it has to be used. Feature is only as good as the solution it provides and at this point it doesn't provide anything. Even the video shows up that drawbacks and the mediocrity of it.
But then again, Samsung was not usually the one to provide elegant solutions for daily issues.
