Overall the whole concept is silly. When you bend something fully it often (not always) leaves a crease. Even cloth often does that. So, there goes the elegance out the window. I predict this tech to work in areas when you need curved or wrap around display as I think its great. Bendable? For everyday use? HAHA, not now and not in next 5 years. Maybe one day but for now, not a chance. Samsung will once again come on the market with something silly (just like their dual edge displays) just to be first but it won't be used much and it won't have the elegance and simplicity the consumer wants or will benefit from.

Just because the tech allows it doesn't mean it has to be used. Feature is only as good as the solution it provides and at this point it doesn't provide anything. Even the video shows up that drawbacks and the mediocrity of it.
But then again, Samsung was not usually the one to provide elegant solutions for daily issues.

On the flip side - it could easily be used on a smart watch type of device where it's more about a flexible/curved display than an actual "fold"

I could be tempted back to Samsung if these ever become a reality!

nah, I prefer a solid working OS in a Mac environment. For me, a Phone is still something I use for calling, checking my mail and for various other "small" things. For serious work I prefer a big screen with some solid computer power.
True, the idea of "stretching" out a screen to make it bigger looks and sounds cool, but it will take some generations to evolve until it could truly replace a larger screen laptop device where you can run native products on.
And all the brands will have similar devices by the time it all would works really well....

Granted, again, this all looks nice and cool, but I doubt it will be a game changer straight from version 1. The "real" game changer will be in bendable screens for general use, like on chairs, tables, or whole walls decorated with bendable screens.

I'm not a big fan of Edge... I feel like that's another gimmick to be first. Apple had patents on that years ago but never pursued it... at least not yet... and I think Edge is a good example of why... there's little utility and the UX is poor.

The warped looking content and glare along the edges drives me nuts and the notifications along the side is straight out of Apple patents but is pretty useless.
Myself I like the hardware, but if I owned one, I doubt I would use the features of the edge itself.

So basically just an overglorified flip phone? Lol History does repeat itself

If only this made calls back in 1982! :p

I've been waiting for this ever since smartphones came out, and things shifted from phones getting smaller to screens getting larger. I'd like a screen on the outside for quick immediate views, and an unfolding screen in 2 or 3 segments, each sized to around Apple's 4" screen devices. I think Microsoft had a concept with two rigid panels with small bezels and a hinge.

I think any really new form factor is likely to come out in Android first, since there are many different companies, which can each try varying things, and often have many different low volume models, instead of Apple's very small number of models with quite high volume. But hopefully after the idea has been proven, and gone through iteration, it'll be available broadly.

They could use this technology to fold clothes on their washing machines. :)

Apart from that, I think that the key will be the user experience with a foldable device. We need to wait until the first real implementation.

That's the difference between the two companies. Samsung actually invents and makes the technology, Apple just "repackages" and assembled other companies parts, they don't actually make the technology.

Immediate reactions are "that seems a really interesting concept, certainly something different". Immediately followed by "how would that actually work realistically, what would the screen quality be, would it be practical and what benefit would it provide?". For now it seems a bit of a gimmick. The difference with Apple is that usually they take emerging technologies, bring them together, advance them and don't release the product until they can make them work properly. By the sound of it this is still likely to be very much work in progress for Samsung.

I was intrigued at first, but then I watched that terrible ad...

It wasn't an ad, of course. It was a video used at an industry show.

That's partly why it was done in a style that lightly mocked consumer stereotypes.

(In this case, the tech wannabe, and the tech groupie.)

You can't take it seriously. I thought it was pretty humorous myself :)

Just the opposite...

Since Samsung appears to be beating Apple to this punch and there's nothing to directly spin "Samesung copying Apple" it's a "gimmick"... soon to be followed by "useless", "99% don't need" and the usual anti-<everyone not named Apple> punches.

I recall how much of a "gimmick", "useless", "99% don't need" PLUS "fragmentation", "one handed use", "pants with bigger pockets", and on and on was spun against phones with bigger screens when Samsung was pushing those and Apple still clung to 4" or less.

I'm still looking for all those pants with bigger pockets and, apparently, all of our hands grew.;)

You've just won.

hmmmm, Samsung may 'make' the technology, but it's Apple that (for the most part) design everything that enables these products to work as they do. If Samsung were so innovative then the phone and tablet market wouldn't have been basically clones of iPhones and iPads over the past 10 years. About time Samsung brought something NEW to the table.

That's the difference between the two companies. Samsung actually invents and makes the technology, Apple just "repackages" and assembled other companies parts, they don't actually make the technology.

Why? it could have two batteries and have 10+ hour battery life just like an iPad...
why do you think it will be super heavy? People carry wallet phone cases that probably weigh more than this thing. They showed the rollable oled display this year i believe i don't see why this can't become a reality by next year. Polished maybe not but it can be a consumer product imo. What do you think technology will be in by 2030? way more advanced than this

Ahhh there's the key- 'rolled up' not folded. It will be interesting to see how this is implemented if it ever comes to market.

Good for Samsung. Once they perfected the tech, then other companies like Apple can simply use them as OEM. Remember, Samsung's arm of displays and semiconductors are not the same as Samsung Mobile. The mobile division still have to "buy" the components later (same thing with NAND chips, etc, which Samsung also make and sell to everyone).

This^. Proof of concept helps sell components to other companies as well. That's my theory on why Samsung throws everything at the market they can, the component division uses the product division to show off their components.

Without a battery and electronics to match... the usefulness of bendy screens is even less than bendy straws.

I'm not a fan of holding an Edge phone. It just doesn't feel comfortable to me or that I have a good grip. They are nicely built, but the design doesn't grab me.

Call me a party pooper, but I just get a bad feeling the durability of such a thing would be horrible for everyday use. I guess we'll see given time.

BTW... seems like this rumor went around last year too about the time a new iPhone came out. This is not the first time we've seen this.

Oh my gosh - you're right. I am sure they haven't even thought about that. I am sure that they've been working on the screen with no consideration to batteries and components for the rest of the phone. You should totally call them! ;)
