Well, given that the Note 3 sold over 5 million in the first month, one could easily say that less than a fifth of those customers wanted the watch that was the companion for it.

Also, some vendors were giving steep discounts for buying both. Yeah, worldwide it could easily be close to a million, especially after the GS4, GS3, and Note II joined the bandwagon.

You conveniently failed to mention that those 5 million "sales" are all channel sales of the note 3. The article you linked to, had channel sales in the title, but you left it off.

The Galaxy Gear Watch is a complete an utter failure. No lies from Samsung on sales number is going to change that fact.

If you disagree that the Gear is a failure, please post a picture of yourself wearing your Galaxy Gear Watch.

Yea, I didn't think so...

So much pain and anger!

LOL..

And what you want to be sure is that you don't pluck the green tomato too early and you want to make sure you don't criticize a small green tomato for not being a big red ripe tomato.

Err hellooo??? Aren't you're the one who plucked the green tomato too early?

Nobody wanted a tablet either. Tablets lingered for 10 years until Apple came out with theirs and now everyone wants one.

smartwatch is not the same as a tablet. It's usefulnes doesn't even come close to tablets.

Don't stress yourself out. The previous comment I linked to helps explain what a channel sale is, and how that's actually the same way Apple reports its sales.

If thats' not enough then there are is the raw search data. Some of those links there actually point to sales call references stating that Sammy was trying to get a 2-3 Gears sold for every 10 Note 3's, which would put their desired amount at around 900,000 or so which means they kinda hit their mark if the 800,000 holds true.

Now for me personally, I again say calm down. I have been bashing the Galaxy Gear since I arrived. Quoting and claiming facts to support my opinion doesn't mean that I own a GG and Samsung stock.

I'm not a fan of this thing either but to those saying that it has to be charged daily: there are people that wind their watches up every day. So charging watch A overnight vs. winding watch B before bed boils down to the same thing...

inb4 "niche market" "people r stoopid y0" etc., etc...

Don't forget the 33% return rate on sold samsung watches ... that makes ~34,000 in/on customer hands ....

It's a 30% return rate, sorry, I know I am splitting hairs.

Agreed. Folks that charge their phones every night are the same way. Why complain about battery life when you'll stick in on the charger every night?

Now, I don't know about you, but that alone killed the hype for me. Then looking at it destroyed any hopes of me even trying it out . . . it's ugly. I don't need to charge my phone every night, and I don't want to add additional expensive devices to my daily kit. The phone and the laptop are more than enough.

It IS ugly and you're right, I don't have to charge my phone every night. But what killed it for me was the concept itself.
I'm a watch collector and a watch enthusiast. I love watches and I always wear watches. I can't imagine wearing...THIS...on my wrist instead of an actual watch. Even if Apple made the most beautiful, most successful iWatch ever, I just wouldn't be able to bring myself to wear it.
Tough to explain if one isn't a WIS but that goes for any hobby. :D

That is the first time that I've heard that. I seem to recall that Apple themselves stated that when they say "sold" it is to the end user.

Apple has never said that, just bloggers.

It's okay, it has to be explained again nearly every time sales/shipments comes up.

There's no doubt that you innocently read it somewhere. There's a lot of internet myths out there.

If you're really interested, just do an advanced forum search for posts with the words "shipped sold" from my id. Those messages have contained many references over the years.

Cheers!

Probably more likely specified by Apple....or are we saying LG screens are crap because of poor Apple designs? Can't have it both ways?

Your going of topic, lets put it this way.

IF Apple comes out with a iWatch and IF it does end up being successful, the chances of Samsung taking the iWatch concept and applying it to their Galaxy Gear is very High.

Honestly I have never seen it in person and have never seen anyone wearing it.

When you're dealing with innovation and when you're dealing with startups, I always make the analogy to small green tomatoes. What we're dealing with is small green tomatoes and what we want to do is take care of them and work with them so they can become big red ripe tomatoes.

And what you want to be sure is that you don't pluck the green tomato too early and you want to make sure you don't criticize a small green tomato for not being a big red ripe tomato.

It's a 1.0 device. I like it a ton. It's 1.0. Personally, I don't think enough people gave us the credit for innovating and getting it out there. Not easily done to integrate all this functionality into one thing. But I would also say over time this thing is going to get big and red.

Samsung wants to make great products but has no idea how, and they call it "unfinished" instead until they come up and/or find something to steal that turns it into something useful.

Don't criticize unfinished products for being unfinished crap. In other words, you bought unfinished crap, and you're better not complaining about it. It's not Samsung's fault that there is no iWatch to copy, yet.

It's a crappy device. [Samsung Executive] like it a lot. It's unfinished crap. People don't gave them enough credit for throwing an unfinished product on the market.

What the **** is this guy even talking about. That was about the worst speech from a high-tech executive in this decade so far.

Samsung needs Apple to do the base R&D on the product category.

Yeah, my take on it was going to be:

"When you're dealing with innovation and when you're dealing with startups, I always make the analogy to small green tomatoes. What we're dealing with is small green tomatoes and what we want to do is take care of them and work with them so they can become big red ripe tomatoes."

translation: let Apple do it, then copy. Then dodge lawsuits.

800,000 world wide is really poor considering most of those will have been give-aways with new note and galaxy.

I don't call this innovation, why the hell is samsung trying to be apple. It's almost as bad as dyson vacuum cleaners claiming to be revolutionary!

Come on you can't reinvent something that already sucks, literally without actually killing an older category. ipad killed notebook for example. The iwatch/gear/dyson didn't and won't kill their predecessors ever.

When I hear people cry innovation it's not making something better it's actually making something that is so much better it changes the market and creates a new category that replaces the old.

Every place I've seen, still charges $290 on up for a new Galaxy Gear.

Where are these give-aways with new phones? Thanks!

Also, I just noticed that it's got good reviews on Amazon, which is a bit of a surprise. Hmm. Wonder what they're going for on eBay. Huh. About $250 -$330. Not super cheap yet. Darn.

I still think smartwatches need a real battery breakthrough to become really popular. (I want a color display, too, not B&W like some.)

Yeah. I'm not a big Samsung fan, far from it. But I'll admit that even 50,000 is quite a bit sold in just a couple of months. Now… since the article concludes that the reviews were generally negative, I'd love to see statistics on how many of those 50,000 had already been returned. I'm sure it's an impressive number! :D

Agreed. But more impressive will be how many are on users' wrists!

Samsung themselves have now come out and clarified that they shipped 800,000 to retailers and sold 50,000 to consumers. So yes it is a massive flop as of right now.

Maybe Samsung wants to get into exclusive haute horlogerie and limit their sales to 50000 pieces per annum, like Patek Philippe
