Ha ha ha... I'm 100% an Apple guy, but if I had one of these, and they sent out an update to brick it, I'd DEFINITELY be switching to another brand after this. Phones are way more than just a convenience anymore.... wow I'd be angry.
For real - my phone is right next to me in bed. Shouldn't have to worry about my safety or my phone exploding while I'm sleeping.

Such a masterpiece of a phone, if you ever tried it out actually. But Samsung had to rush it because of the iPhones. Unbelievably stupid of them. I hope they have learned their lesson.

Apparently, they haven’t learned their lesson. According to an article about Apple’s iPhone 8, Samsung is rushing (again) to be the first with a buttonless (home) phone. The next one will probably decapitate Users.

While I understand the need for safety, I am not sure this is legal.

The consumers did buy the device and chose not to take Samsung up on the offer for a refund or exchange, knowing the risks and restrictions the government has placed on the device.

Now Samsung is pushing out an update that will disable the phones that people paid legitimate money for and OWN, sorry, but manufactures don't get the right to decide to force the consumer to do anything.

Samsung has handled this whole mess so poorly from the very beginning that I can't see anyone justifying their behavior.

Normally I'd agree with you, but keep in mind this device has gone through a full recall via the CPSA. This is no longer a simple transaction between a company and a consumer. I'm not intimately familiar with what this authorizes the company to do, but it definitely changes the legal status of the devices are they are no longer legal for resale by ANYONE.

So you would be angry because a company is bricking your faulty phone that could catch fire/explode, burn down your house or car, that you're still using and did not send back during several known recalls - all to keep you and everyone around you safe? o_O

I despise Samsung as much as the next person but I think you're logic is flawed.

You also don't own the software - you merely have a license to a copy of it. So they can take it away (assuming they put the right language in the license agreement, which they probably did)

If you'd jump brands to punish them because you were too stubborn to return a product even the US Gov't says is dangerous to keep, then I doubt ANY company would miss you. You'd likely be the first in line suing if things went south at a later date and would blame them regardless of the facts, including your part in the situation.

But there brick phone will have a headphone jack like they laughed about it. I finally get the joke. Lol

They're replacing it. The stubborn holding onto a possible hazard makes no sense.

I met a guy the other day and asked him if the iPhone in his hand was the SE. He said no, but was eligible for an upgrade. He told me that he wanted to get a Samsung for his next device, but the Note fiasco turned him away from the Samsung brand. His wife got the S7 six months ago, and with trepidation appearing in his half smile, said it didn't blow up yet.

How can people walk through life thinking a product they own could potentially explode their dick off? It must be Darwin experiment.

Depends on how it handles it. If it's a slow roll out where it gives owners adequate warning of an eminent "shut off" date I think that is fair and we are talking about public safety here, not just a wonky phone. Also any update should allow users to still sync w/ a PC via USB. If Samsung totally bricked the phone with no way to access data then that would be going a bridge too far.

Bet your house on it?

I don't have a phone like that, but if you look at a LiPo battery catching fire, I'm guessing it would be similar. I haven't had an issue yet with the LiPo batteries, but I'm really careful with them.

brickdate!

Brickgate?
[doublepost=1481307864][/doublepost]All this over a phone that 'exploded' rarely. Now, look at those 'e-cig' devices, and how many people have been harmed by them, and the fact that people fly with them in both their checked and carry-on baggage, and tell me what is a greater risk to the public. (And that doesn't even address the malware that people have found on them)

I say ban e-cigs. Outright BAN THEM!

OH SNAP! What I want to know is how many devices exactly caught fire. We have at least one or two confirmed reports of people being bribed by Sammy to keep quiet about it. I feel like with a forced-brick software update, this problem may have been way more widespread than they cared to admit previously.

Brickdategate!

I seem to recall dozens of reports.

I don't know, but some third party company could make a battery that doesn't fail (say Mophie, ZeroLemon, PowerBear)

Wait. Wouldn't the user have to hit the "install button" AFTER the download the update? Or they will be automatically updated??

The S7 doesn't blow up any more than any other phone.. This really shows how much damage the note battery mess has done to their Samsung's brand. :)

All batteried devices could explode your dick off.. My wife's MacBook could easily have killed her and/or our baby daughter when it's battery caught fire in the night.. near the bed.. When it wasn't even plugged in. But it doesn't put us off tech. :D

I wouldn't have a note7 though, anyone not sending them in for replacements is crazy, and I'm happy Samsung are solving that issue.

Found a Samsung ad the other day, so I had some fun. Applies now.

It's sad that this happens, we have to keep the market competitive otherwise, company's get lazy on trying to 1-up the rivals.

I really was going to get the note 7 since the 7 wasn't appealing to me. Thank goodness I didn't!
