Really glad I got an iPhone 11 Pro last year, I’ll have an 18W charger for years now no extra cost! 😂

Exactly. You and millions and millions of users. This charger/EarPods drama is the usual behaviour of people when you take away something they are use to get. The world is flooded with iPhone chargers, even grandmas and their cats have many many spares. So yeah, just another drama that makes sense a bit later to people.

If this is true I doubt it's a reaction to Apple. I think people forgot that these decisions are made months and months before the trigger is pulled. Even more so with designing a new model. Don't get me wrong, initially, all Apple's competitors copied them to at least some degree, if not outright cloned the iPhone. But these days Apple is almost assuredly already working on iPhone 14. And Samsung is probably working on one or two models into the future as well.

It’s disingenuous to put forward cost savings as the swing vote here. The EU is putting laws in place about E-waste. And yes, shipping millions of cables and wired EarPods are basically e-waste waiting to happen. So a small cost savings, very small I’d guess, is probably not the motivating factor here.

iPod touch doesn’t ship with a charger or a voucher...

Apple sold 66 million iPhones in 2019. Not sure how much the charger and headphones cost, but lets say together it's an extra $5. That's $330,000,000 dollars. That's not a small chunk of change. That's like three F-35s and a jackpot winning, leftover.

Having said that, I am very happy that they'll be producing thousands of tons less e-waste.

EDIT: I was in a rush and mistakenly only used the sales figures from ONE QUARTER. It's more around 190 million phones. So the total savings by not including those items would be guesstimated at more like 1 billion dollars. Sorry for the dumb mistake.

I wonder if people will pick up cheap knockoff chargers instead. Those have caused issues in the past.

Given I have something like a dozen power bricks in my house, I applaud the decision not to give me yet another one I will not use.

Yup. I think I have somewhere around 10-12 power adapters in my house, I don’t need any more. Regardless if this rumor is accurate, it only makes sense for these manufacturers to move forward with this. Including things that potentially could help from unnecessary waste From an ‘environmental standpoint’ and cost reduction.

I'm surprised. I mean, I knew all Android manufacturers would follow Apple's lead eventually just like they do for everything else Apple does. I just didn't expect it to start so soon. This is good news. I hope others follow as well.

It's disingenious to overlook the tons of useless proprietary 5W chargers that end up in landfills. If Apple had shipped universal USB-C >=15W chargers they'd be in use.

As for iPod, there's a big price difference compared to phone plus it's expected to connect the iPod to a computer to transfer music which also charges its relatively tiny battery. Same reason you don't use a lawn mower as justification for not including an alternator in a car.

Seriously, this is good news for our environment. Please stop complaining. This is how all electronics should be sold, you buy what you need.

What you can complain about, if it happens, is if this will be marketed as above but price drop doesn’t match actual cost.

Yep. People also need to stop buying phones every year. The chips are incredibly capable these days. They should last 4-5 years easy.

Apple & Samsung fanbois attacking each other, while tech giants organize themselves to squeeze every penny they can.

What's next...MacBooks without power adapters? Ridiculous. Yes, many of us already have power adapters, but to sell products without a critical component such as a charger being included is absurd.

Oh, you wanted SEATS and a STEERING WHEEL in your new car? You'll have to purchase those separately! Don't you have seats from your last car you can use? WTF.
Bluetooth headphones mostly come without power adapters, ditto for fitness trackers, some Apple Watches, GoPros and many more devices.

I'm fine with assuming they lower the price accordingly. Something tells me they'll charge the same and keep the difference though.
They should give you an option of including a charger for free, or for like five bucks. Like taking your own bag to the grocery store. If you want a charger, they should give you one. Me, I order a new phone every year and my wife every couple years, plus iPads, and we have USB charging outlets. Every time I open a junk box to clean out, I find at least one iPhone charger. So this is fine by me.

I'd agree with this move if the industry wasn't in the middle of converting everyone over to USB-C. I just feel like it's a few years too early. We just got our first iPhone with USB-C power adapter included last year!

Buy cheap China (not Chinese) crap chargers that catch on fire like everyone else will would be my guess.
I did notice the other day after going through some old junk boxes that some cheap charging cables I bought on Amazon years ago that Apple had managed to make non-functional through some software updates years ago now work with my iPhone 11 Pro. So I suddenly have a ton more charging cables.
