I must be honest I expected Samsung to mock apple then do the same a few years later ala headphone jack.

The fact they want to do it asap as well says something.
Companies must have data that says people have plenty of charging bricks and the shipping/production costs must be more significant than they appear to be

I was annoyed at first....until I grabbed a small box and went around my house collecting charging blocks and cords. I had 10 charging blocks and more cords....all in various outlets around my house. I even had some plugged into the guess room in case guest needed a charger lol

Phil, you got it right. Courage. First the headphone jack and then the brick and earpods. I even give props to Samsung for trying to reduce the e-waste.

I’m sorry if I’m spending $1K on a phone it should work out of the box. We all know they’re not going to reduce the price of the phone so they should offer a credit for people who need one. Don’t put it in the box but offer a credit for people to order one or pick one up in store. And a fast charger. My guess is the chargers most people have sitting in draws is the 5W one.

Apple sells over 200M iPhones per year. Their 18w USB-C charger weighs 2.39 oz. Do the math - that’s over 15,000 TONS of waste every year, just for a charger. It also makes the box twice as thick, which means more paper and more shipping cost (and more fuel burned). All that just to include a charger that more and more people already have.

Do people actually use them at all? I normally never even take them out of the box. I charge the phone on a pad next to the bed at night and during the day, if needed just plug it into the computer.

Just a thought

Has anyone ever thought that this decision was made partially due to the supply chain disruption during the global pandemic?

Customers would rather get their phones on time than wait longer for a phone that comes with accessories.

What's next...MacBooks without power adapters? Ridiculous. Yes, many of us already have power adapters, but to sell products without a critical component such as a charger being included is absurd.

Oh, you wanted SEATS and a STEERING WHEEL in your new car? You'll have to purchase those separately! Don't you have seats from your last car you can use? WTF.
Dang it, you just gave them another idea!

probably for the better
dont need more chargers and cables polluting our earth
yet sometime i feel i dont have a charger close by
no worries

You can buy apple certified cords and chargers that are 40% cheaper than apple's, and have higher quality.

My Anker power supply lasted a few weeks past its warranty date and they wouldn't replace it. All my Apple chargers are working. Since 2007. I know I probably just got an Anker lemon but they were a brand name I trusted and I was bummed there would help me out. Apple would have said, well it's only a few weeks past warranty, we'll send you a new one. Because Apple has the best, most forgiving and generous customer service in the industry. That's one thing they've always gotten right. For decades.

Ugh. I sell my chargers with my phones when I upgrade. Guess I’ll be buying 3rd party chargers from here on out. Thanks for screwing your customers again, Apple.

Doubt they're all USB-C which is what the whole industry is in the midst of converting to. For many people they're actually short on USB-C chargers. I could use spares myself for recently added devices like Raspberry Pi 4, power banks, home/travel, etc. and because demand is exceeding supply the prices are still inflated.

At least give the customer the option to have a charger, ex. if you buy a new phone at an Apple Store they should give you a charger if you request one. I may not need one but if someone is buying their first iPhone..I think it would be a good idea to give them a way to charge their first phone.

This is still a rumor, but competitors are like:"They're doing that?? From now on, we are too!"
No they all get together and decide to do it and decide who will go when and all the other parts of the act. Just like the cellular carriers do when they want to raise prices.

Exactly. And no matter how many have a megacache of cords and adaptors, there are always going to be noobs entering the ecosystem. And a lot could be clueless to all this news of no way to charge their devices out of the boxes.
