Aren't you concerned that this year's iPhones won't have 5G? You'd be stuck with 4G for a few years.

No. Because 4G works fine and 5G will bring no perceivable benefits for users. It's just a number on a piece of paper that spec whores can brag about.

Perhaps you should also ask Samsung that question. I mean, 3 out of the 4 S10 models they sell DON'T have 5G. I guess they're all "stuck" with 4G for years as well?

When you hold these phones you realise that Samsung keeps the best OLED panels for themselves.

Is that why the iPhone always steals the crown of "best smartphone display" from Samsung when it launches just after the Note?

No surprise. Even using the same panels Samsung loses because Android has a completely useless version of half-baked color management. Can't even properly display more than one color space on the screen at a time.

One of my favorite devices.

My Note8 is still a fantastic, do-it-all device. Split-screen multitasking, dark mode, back button, headphone jack, DEx, fingerprint and retina sensors for login, USB-C, the obvious pen, and a superior mail app are the daily-use differentiating features that make it hard for me to go back to iPhone.

But nevertheless, I may, MAY give iPhone a shot this fall for 2 years. Let's see what happens at the keynote.
More likely to give it a try in 2020 as supposedly this is essentially in theory an Xss year, but we'll wait for the keynote. I would LOVE for some company, ANY company, to leak a phone like crazy and then it not be the phone at all when it comes out. It would be hilarious.

5G is a gimmick and will be for the foreseeable future. Carriers haven't even rolled out full speed 4g/LTE, and people think they are going to do something different for 5G? Erecting all of the extra towers alone is going to be an issue because of cost and NIMBYism.

Exactly. It’s amazing to me that anyone cares. Apple events didn’t matter to most people for years and years. Releasing a new phone isn’t deserving of such an event every year. Apple knows this and I’m sure they are trying to figure out a way around it. Samsung is a hack appliance company. Do they hold refrigerator release events. Industrial drill events? Only for people who care about that specific thing. This is soooo silly. But it makes Samsung and the Korean Govt. feel like they matter in some way, as if they are moving anything forward. They are a component maker. The only people I know and have met who seem excited or energized Andre Samsung Sales Reps. They feel like they are part of a company anyone cares about for a few minutes each time. I hope they give everyone on e of those cool foldable phones they bragged about...

That's some hard Apple-splaining, bro. Take it easy, you don't have to fight Apple's battles for them.

Who would have thought that Samsung would eventually beat Apple on aesthetics?

Consumers don’t care about smart phone aesthetics. All these phones generally look the same anyways, what they do care about, is the platform they belong to, either iOS or android. I’ve never heard anyone outside a tech forum form discuss the aesthetic’s on a smart phone phone. Your post is a clear example of an exaggerated opinion.

Not really. I'm away from major cities, I drive from home to work (both destinations where I have access to computers) and I honestly don't use my phone that much anymore, so I don't need the extra speed.

As a matter of fact, I don't even own my phone. It's work issued, and I get to choose between Apple and Samsung (went with the latter since giving up a 4s).

The entire industry is convinced 5G is the real thing but you know better. Did not we see this with Apple fans before? Sure we did many times. According to them BT beacons were a real thing as opposed to NFC gimmick. Well, the attitude changed once Apple finally added NFC to iPhone. The same will happen with 5G. Everybody knows that the reason iPhones do not have 5G still is because Apple could not find 5G modem supplier (and Intel failed). Who are you trying to fool with your ignorant rants?

I seriously don't get the hype for 5G for everyday usage. I get 30-60Mbps down consistently on my phone no matter where I am. Why do I need faster internet? I can stream any video I want instantaneously, YouTube buffers quickly, and I'm never downloading large files. I can't imagine the general public cares about gigabit wireless data, let alone care about it enough for it to be a crucial feature in their next phone.

Now, if I could buy phone that makes my data cap larger and more cheaper, I'd buy that.

Considering how iterative smartphone releases have become I'm not sure we need an event to announce them anymore.

Yes, we do.

If you are not interested in releases of new technology, why are you wasting time hanging around on a forum site dedicated to technology? There are plenty of other forums on the Internet dedicated to other topics.

Man, Apple's bezels look thicker each passing year. I don't think they need to go any smaller, but when you see an iPhone X next to some of modernthe Androids, it sort of stands out.

This is shaping up to like the s8/iPhone 7 year, where Samsung's flagship just looks so much better. the iPhone 7 looked like a dinosaur next to the s8.

Meanwhile I’m wondering how to hold it without the screen getting in the way. Or a case, which I use. I’m not sure I want a non-bezel phone from any company, including Apple.

People on 4G in crowded places do not get 30Mbps. Bandwidth is an issue which is addressed by 5G. Sure 4G is pretty good, still 5G is better. You may find yourself, say, at a stadium/concert etc. with 4G users not being able to connect while 5G users enjoying their phones. Not super critical but still...

K but actually, those were all things that other manufacturers jumped on before they reached useful levels of relevance in everyday life. We really didn't need LTE years earlier, nor was the lack of NFC a huge issue prior to Apple Pay. At this point, any increase in speed over what LTE already provides (100 megabits or so most of the time) is ultra negligible, especially when you consider that 5G won't be properly implemented for years, and nowhere near its peak advertised speeds. 4G hasn't even gotten to its theoretical maximums yet ffs.

That's at least the take that him and I have on 5G. I'd love to be proven wrong (I'm never against things getting faster and better for users). Until then, tone it down with the "ignorant rants" crap - we all have opinions based on our own experiences, and my experience is certainly that LTE took years to get to usable speeds/availability, and it's still nowhere near used as much as the technology allows.

Smartphones are not tablets. Nobody holds them by the bezels. One would have to have really small hands to be able to hold an iPhone by the bezel :)

There were at least two important NFC based features before Apple Pay: Google Wallet and automatic pairing of smartphones to photo/video cameras (and other devices).

Maybe now that Ive is finally gone, Apple might start getting their aesthetic right.

Samsung sucks due to having Android, but they get the design right.

Let me know when they have. I'm still waiting.

Samsung is smart to launch a month before the iPhone. They can try to sell a few before the tsunami that is the iPhone comes out and steals the spotlight from virtually everyone.

Yeah, sure. As if the release of a new iPhone has excited anyone in the last decade.

Newsflash: The smartphone market is over-saturated, "matured" and just piss-boring.
