Oh joy, yet another "Samsung sucks - they copy from Apple" thread.

As hard as this may be for some of our lesser educated members to understand, Samsung are not copying apple. For one thing "retina display" is not a technology. It's a term invented by the apple marketing department because they didn't want the same "high resolution display" name that their competitors use.

Now, with a tablet there is only so much you can do. We are at a point in technology where we have to wait a few years for the next gen super cpu's ( I'm talking 3ghz+ quad or oct core arm's). The logical thing to do right now is improve the usability as that's pretty much all that can be done. The screen is a logical upgrade. The tech has only recently become available and was most certainly not an apple innovation. Companies like Samsung and LG are the ones doing that research and development, not apple as they don't make displays.

The assumption here seems to be that if apple's rumour surfaced first then anyone else who is rumoured to be doing the same thing MUST have copied Apple...if that's what you want to believe then more fool you, but Samsung is much more likely to have had access to the tech way before apple. The issue has been getting a CPU that can power it reliably (the A5 should suffice but it will take a performance hit, that's for sure).

Wow a whopping 50 pixels he he... now THAT'S a deal breaker! I'd rather give up 50 pixels and use IOS (UNIX) than some crap google OS he he...

first "computer" since 2006

Can't wait! This will be my first computer since 2006 1st genration MacBook! FYI, my MacBook is working well, thank you.

At least someone is trying to compete with Apple.

I agree, but I wouldn't be surprised if what they put out kindof sucks and is underpowered, then apple somehow does the same thing spec wise, but it just works better. The horsepower to run that display isn't trivial. Nobody has been able to take apple rumors and make awesome stuff first it seems. Remember balmer with the HP tablet before the ipad was introduced? lol

If samsung can pull it off smoothly first, more power to them, but the whole android part of it is a turnoff to me, so I'd never consider buying one. But I welcome competition as it will only make apple stuff better in the long run. My life in the apple garden is good, I see no reason to leave.

One of these days, with the endless flame war Apple v. Android, this kind of front-page news will end in Wasteland :D.

Now this I'm in favor of. I would rather have companies compete with each other in terms of business products than try and hinder each other in the courts.

You do of course realise than Linux underpins Android - which is a UNIX derivative kernel - just as Darwin underpins iOS?

Android is just as UNIX-ey as iOS is.

It's also totally and utterly irrelevent to the rumour of samsung using a high resolution display.

But, thanks for your input.

In what way is creating a new screen capable of high resolutions copying Apple? And it's only a rumour so far that Apple is actually going to use a "Retina display" on their next iPad, so again, in what way are they copying Apple?

Oh goody, now we have "My rumor is better than your rumor."

You do realize that both products are just rumors at this stage?

Just let them get on with it. They won't make anyone rush to buy one because of the screen quality.

Why don't they just focus on one tab and make that great. How many tabs have they got out now??

LOL, this kind of 'competing' has been going on for years.

Every PC on the market is capable of trumping any Macintosh (capable, not that it does, the hardware on the PC side is way better).

When the iPod was big, there were MANY superior alternatives. Cowon aka iAudio was consistently releasing DAPs that were not only of the same quality, but almost every time they offered more; external media card slot, UMS/MSC, no need for software to transfer media, flac, ogg, divx, xvid support, longer battery life, 3-5 band equalizers, better supplied headphones, better SOUND in general (cowon is king on audio quality in the portable area).

The Tablet scene is going to be no different. Every manufacturer is going to give consumers more bang for their buck, and critics ALWAYS overlook the shortcomings of apple products, as if to favour Apple unrealistically. Theres no denying that Apple skimps out on hardware specs and offerings (proof? just look how AWFUL video cards are for macintoshes).

What Apple has going for it, and it always has, is an area where the competition is 95% of the time clueless; USER INTERFACE. Nobody delivers a product like Apple does that makes devices usable without reading a manual. Android is coming along nicely as another alternative, and eventhough I have an android, I still think it needs some work (more fluid GUI, it can get laggy sometimes).

Im getting really tired however of apple getting a free pass everytime they release a crippled product by their own inability to provide their customers at least SOME options. How long did it take Apple to incorporate an SD slot into the macbook pros and iMacs? Why isnt there a broader choice of DECENT and CURRENT video cards at a reasonable price? Why are iPod, iPhone and iPad users restricted and forced to use iTunes? Why isnt there greater support for other video formats right out of the box? Why is there no microSD slot or removable battery on any iPhone? Why does iPhone not give some customization of the UI and system preferences, like, i dont know, a different keyboard?!

Or am I the ONLY one who enjoys having options?

This would be in Samsungs best interest and is a reason Apple is so successful. They have a model of iPad per year (so far) and although its SSD size change (and 3G vs non-3G) its essentially the same piece of hardware that performs consistently.

Patent infringement or not, this is good for the consumer as Apple and Samsung will NOT conspire to fix "tablet" prices.

I still don't see a use for either, though, but I guess millions of others do.

I don't really care much that Samsung is trying to fiercely compete with Apple on their mobile products because that really just benefits me as a consumer in the end (even if they are copying).

I will say this though. I can't help but find it quite plausible that Samsung did get, and move on the on the idea of a super-high resolution tablet when they worked with Apple to produce one for the iPad, and then target the release of that tablet to compete with the one they know Apple is preparing to put out.

Think about it. If Apple has been working on a retina display iPad with a release target of February (or whenever), then Samsung has known about it all this time as a supplier. Whats to stop them as a coopetitor to take the idea of knowledge of such technology and try to preempt their largest opponent in the process. Makes sense from a business perspective to me.

Personally, I don't really care if they do beat Apple to the market with the new Galaxy Tab. If have really grown to dislike Android and prefer iOS (interface, ecosystem among my MacBook, iPod and eventually iPad and maybe iPhone) and WP7 (interface, development tools) devices at this point so I still plan on getting an iPad 3.

With so many companies and so much being sunk into R&D (or so I hope), you would think they would have come up with a unique defining feature or 2 of their own, outside of merely improved specs all round.

I mean, Sony made theirs wedge-shaped, Asus incorporated a sliding keyboard, what did Samsung do?

This is really good news as another large manufacturer producing these things in bulk will help drive down costs and improve yield.

Samsung made the thinnest tablet when it was released.

Samsung is not really "another large manufacturer", it's the main display supplier for Apple's iPad ;). On top of that "in bulk" is somewhat wishful thinking, considering the dismal quantities of non-iPad tablets sold.

I hate those displays that use dithering to achieve a higher resolution... I'll stick with the tradition panel thank you very much.
