Yes. Samsung invented its own display technology. Embedding 2560 x 1440 resolution into 10" display.

But let's be honest here. Did anyone ever have the slightest idea to use larger than 300 PPI display before Apple began it with iPhone and iPod Touch? Was there any manufacturers really care about PPI numbers on a smartphone display just before iPhone 4? Or even a slightest thought of using IPS display just to have a great viewing angle (although as we know we have IPS display technology for quite a long time) ... again, before iPhone 4?

Has it ever come to some of Samsung's engineer that it is IMPORTANT to also count display PPI and not just resolution? A 50" 1080p HDTV is not great anymore once you count PPI number on it.

Again, Apple may not invent this "retina display" technology, but, Apple thought about it, implemented it into iPhone, and as usual Samsung just thought .. "Oh, that's a great idea, how about we use it on our own tablet?"

Yeah, no one else but Apple ever saw the upside of higher resolution. In fact, before Apple came to the table, we all had VGA resolution on just about everything. Oh and yeah, TN too. Well, CRT at first.. but after that, TN... at best.

Why do you think companies like Samsung invented better screen technology to begin with? Because Apple told them to?

p.s.

PPI is an empty spec. In itself, it means nothing. Its only relevant in relation to distance. Further, i still see no one but Apple giving a rats about fronting "retina" or "ppi". Rather, as always, we're talking resolution. And of course we've always been concerned with viewing angles.

Its not that Apple thought about things first. It's that they had the guts (and market support) to try things out first. All things mentioned have been expensive. To get expensive things out in the market a few things are nice to have: e.g. volume orders, willing-to-pay customers. Apple clearly have both.

----------

4x4=16; 3x3=9

Say what? Different ratios all together.

4/3 =1.33..
16/9 = 1.77..

p.s. if you weren't all that serious, +1.

Well, with the advent of phones with 720p screens. Expect phones with a higher PPI than the iPhone 4/4S.

That means Samsung, Google and Sony Ericsson are copying Apple because they have/will have phones that exceed the iPhone in terms of PPI?

It's called competition, Samsung makes Apple's screens.

And as far as I know, Apple didn't invent pixels and high resolution panels.

Apple, where's my 1080p MacBook Pro?

i miss the days when not everything turned into a debate about who copied who

seriously calling out COPYING just bc the news is about samsungs high resolution screens is hilarious. i take it u'd prefer if everyone but apple stayed on a <900 resolution? nice competition and choices for the customer right there ... not

Copying isn't competition.

It's a very effective form of competition. Let someone test the market, then mov in as it grows and capture market share. Apple's been very good at making it hard to copy the entire eco-system; but many companies aren't and despite early innovation lose out to later entrants.

MS is a good example of how a fast follower can successfully compete by being a later entrant.

Apple envy? Bitter much?

Hardly....I think the only samsung products in my house is a TV and my two monitors. They make pretty nice screens that do the job well.

Why did you even bother posting? What exactly would I be bitter about?

Samsung may indeed be first, but can they ship enough to make it viable for them? We know that Apple won't be able to make them fast enough, to satisfy demand.

Or am I the ONLY one who enjoys having options?

Probably not, but you do have to recognise that there too are people who simply don't care or do not wish to bother with this sort of thing. They can't be bothered to fiddle around with settings, open up their computers to upgrade stuff, mess around with maintenance programs/schedules or even change their wallpaper. They trust that the default settings are good enough for them and just use it as is.

Or as some put it so succinctly, they want a product that just works. :)

Although I believe that the iPad will remain king of the tablets no matter what, its great to see that other companies are fighting back with their products. It keeps Apple from slacking and prices won't get too out of hand. When I get a tablet it will be an iPad but i thank those who buy otherwise.

Apple will continue to lose marketshare. They are too dumb/proud to realize that their model of business will lead to apple of the early 90s.

You've said what I think, thank you. I am an Apple FanMan, (I'm 56 ferfuxake so by no stretch of the imagination can I be a Fan boy) I love most things Apple and I have lots (I mean LOTS) of Apple kit in my house and my company. But I also tire of the regime that keeps me tied to whatever Apple chooses I am allowed to do. The fact that they have only just let us out into the playground and play with our text notification sounds is ridiculous. iPhone battery dead? Go buy a new iPhone mate.

I dislike Samsung because they do copy - not just Apple, but everyone and every thing. They are copiers and make copiers designed by other companies. But Apple asks for some heat because of their stupid, stupid single-mindedness at times. Which I agree is both a strength and a weakness. When they bring out a phone that makes texting a texting job and not a text-editing-and-correcting job, I'll be happier.

LOL, this kind of 'competing' has been going on for years.

Every PC on the market is capable of trumping any Macintosh (capable, not that it does, the hardware on the PC side is way better).

When the iPod was big, there were MANY superior alternatives. Cowon aka iAudio was consistently releasing DAPs that were not only of the same quality, but almost every time they offered more; external media card slot, UMS/MSC, no need for software to transfer media, flac, ogg, divx, xvid support, longer battery life, 3-5 band equalizers, better supplied headphones, better SOUND in general (cowon is king on audio quality in the portable area).

The Tablet scene is going to be no different. Every manufacturer is going to give consumers more bang for their buck, and critics ALWAYS overlook the shortcomings of apple products, as if to favour Apple unrealistically. Theres no denying that Apple skimps out on hardware specs and offerings (proof? just look how AWFUL video cards are for macintoshes).

What Apple has going for it, and it always has, is an area where the competition is 95% of the time clueless; USER INTERFACE. Nobody delivers a product like Apple does that makes devices usable without reading a manual. Android is coming along nicely as another alternative, and eventhough I have an android, I still think it needs some work (more fluid GUI, it can get laggy sometimes).

Im getting really tired however of apple getting a free pass everytime they release a crippled product by their own inability to provide their customers at least SOME options. How long did it take Apple to incorporate an SD slot into the macbook pros and iMacs? Why isnt there a broader choice of DECENT and CURRENT video cards at a reasonable price? Why are iPod, iPhone and iPad users restricted and forced to use iTunes? Why isnt there greater support for other video formats right out of the box? Why is there no microSD slot or removable battery on any iPhone? Why does iPhone not give some customization of the UI and system preferences, like, i dont know, a different keyboard?!

Or am I the ONLY one who enjoys having options?

But they did provide their own music store to download it from. Other media players you had to get it elsewhere. You normally cannot buy single songs, you had to buy the whole album, even if you only liked a few songs. Apple removed DRM from its itunes store. These are things that helped make the iPod popular, not better specifications.

Again better specifications in hardware don't matter much if the tablet is still laggy and the interface hard to use.

Most manufactures cannot beat Apples price point for their iPad, either its cheaper ( Your bang for the buck/Cheaper hardware ) or cost more ( Same or equivalent hardware )

Im getting really tired however of apple getting a free pass everytime they release a crippled product by their own inability to provide their customers at least SOME options.

Options like: The best customer support in the industry, the best software/hardware integration, they write their own drivers, more stable & less likely to crash.

Why are iPod, iPhone and iPad users restricted and forced to use iTunes? Why isnt there greater support for other video formats right out of the box?

The iTunes store was what brought the success of the iPod/iPhone/iPad and has more music sold and downloaded then from any other source. The iOS gaming Center is bigger then even XBox Live.

It might be restrictive to you, but apparently not to millions of others.

Why does iPhone not give some customization of the UI and system preferences, like, i dont know, a different keyboard?!

People are more concerned with if it works like its suppose to without problems, more so then worrying about customization.

Why is there no microSD slot or removable battery on any iPhone

Apples batteries can be recharged 1000 times with much longer battery life then most devices. So why does it need to be replaceable?

Using a removable battery means adding additional hardware making the phone bigger or the battery smaller, something that some people are not willing to compromise.

Or am I the ONLY one who enjoys having options?

Or Different options, Apparently so...

...

after owning a galaxy 10.1 and an ipad2 I can say for sure the iPad is better than the galaxy tab in spite or hardware because Honeycomb is pretty awful compared to iOS. Sure you can put widgets down and do this and that but other than fluff like that the core functionality (browser, syncing, etc) is all far worse on the galaxy than the iPad. I also owned a touchpad that I bought during the fire sale and the touchpad with apps and a thinner design I would have preferred to the iPad, but the design was too bulky and there wasn't enough software. Definitely even as it was though the touchpad beat out the galaxy 10.1 for sure

You do of course realise than Linux underpins Android - which is a UNIX derivative kernel

Please, what branch of Unix did Linux emerge from ? Because frankly, here I thought the original idea came from Linus being a student of Andrew Tannenbaum, and the first versions of Linux used concepts from Minix.

Silly me I guess.

We're going to be like that are we?

It's important to note, that yes, while the shape is nothing unique, or the colour, it certainly didn't have to all be like that and most certainly didn't need to imitate the dress code Apple set for the party.

ffs... i'm so tired of ignorance.

here.
joojoo-tablet_1.jpg

it's not an ipad (it's a joojoo)... it was launched before the ipad.

and this article of the 7th of january of 2010 already shows the hp slate.
http://crave.cnet.co.uk/laptops/hp-slate-gets-face-time-in-microsoft-keynote-49304616/

fool yourself if you want but don't try to convince others with what you were fooled with.

was ipad revolutionary? yes.
was it unique? no.

why was ipad revolutionary? because apple grabbed a dorment product area and made it successful.

"but the ipad is much thinner that all the previous tablets"... true but that was only possible because of the components tech leap. size, heat, function.
lcd's were crap before crt's were discontinued. mass production of lcds helped the creation of good tablets.

so tell me. where is samsung copying the ipad by throwing a "retina" display first? after all there are the ones that provided the technology.

Apple haters

I'm always fascinated how many Apple haters always come here to "discuss". Why they just do't go somewhere else, where they can find some agreement how the Apple is bad and Samsung the best and how Apple copy from Samsung.

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. Samsung saw the success of the iPad and sees what consumers want.

Supply and demand. Nothing new here.

Exactly. If Apple want's to keep trying to shift paradigms all the time, the should be prepared for other companies to try follow where they had success. If I created a successful product, it would be kind of obvious to me that other companies would try to get competitors out.

Nostalgia

This is bringing back the good old days of the 80s and 90s when we picked out a computer using objective quantitative criteria instead of all this squishy subjective "experience" stuff.

Maybe now that Steve's gone, we'll finally return to facts instead of opinions, and pay closer attention to the fundamentals of hardware -- screen resolutions, processor speed, storage, etc. -- and leave behind all this nonsense about whether the device is "delightful", "friendly" or "pleasant" to "use".

it's not an ipad (it's a joojoo)... it was launched before the ipad.

They were almost released at the same time. Yes, the Slate was announced 20 days earlier, but lets not grasp over straws here.
