Well, they are frenemies as Apple sources parts from Samsung.
I think one needs to draw a distinction between the branch of Samsung that sells phones and the part of Samsung that sells electronic components. Just because I am at loggerheads with a few people of a particular race doesn't mean I suddenly hate everyone of said race.

The only people who care about the MP size of their phone cameras are nerds and geeks. 99% of iPhone or Android buyers couldn't care less.
This extends to the whole Android vs. iOS debates really. Beyond these tech sites where you get geeks and those who are extra particular about their electronics, I've met some who do have specific reasons for getting one or the other. However, I've also talked with plenty of people when asked why they got iOS or Android, their response has been in the lines of "it just works", "I like Android (or) iOS", or it was recommended by friends/family. These people don't care that Android is more customizable (they just throw icons on their home screen without changing their layout), with more choices (they never delve beyond the same manufacturer, like Samsung). These people don't care about iOS' privacy stances (not when they use so many Google products, and are on Facebook an hour a day on their phones).

It should also be noted that the largest photo that can be uploaded to Facebook is 2048px by 2048px. That's roughly a 4 megapixel image.

The largest Instagram photo is 1080px by 1350px. That's roughly a 1.5 megapixel image.

Sure it doesn't hurt to capture more megapixels for cropping and for the poster-sized prints that people always insist that they do on a regular basis.

But you don't necessarily need 108 megapixels or even 48 megapixels for The 'Gram

As others have pointed out... better pixels are preferable to more pixels.

:p
