I don't really think that Apple will really release a smartwatch. It's such a dumb idea unless Apple can revolutionize the design, battery life, and use case of such product. Smartwatches at the current stage are totally disastrous.

It could be a good idea if someone can do it right. For those who still want to use a watch it could be nice to have one that does a lot more. Of course it needs to last longer then a day and do the right tasks.

This is basically a colored Pebble that cost 3x more.... The price point is horrible. Even if Apple brings an amazing smart watch to the market, $299 is really pushing it. A companion device should be no more than $199.

For a companion device, I think $199 is too much. In fact, I'm going to go lower than my earlier statement. $79 would be ideal. $99 is more likely. $129 is possible, but definitely the limit. Any more and it should be its own animal.

re: original article
i'm not buying it
what is the use of the device if you need reading glasses to check it if your over 40yo
not the form factor for me

If Apple had released it, I'd predict it would be a total failure.
Since Samsung released it, it is already a total failure.

First Microsoft, now Samsung. Microsoft listened to all those people who claimed that Apple would unify MacOS X and iOS, and worked hard to beat Apple to it, creating Windows 8. Turns out Apple isn't doing this, and Windows 8 is a total failure. Now Samsung listened to all those people claiming that Apple would build the "iWatch" and made a product exactly like these people predicted. But totally different from anything Apple would build. Well, they should have waited for the Apple product to copy it.

Windows 8 is such a failure that its allready in more houses than all osx versions combined.

Take off the camera and make it $199 max.

Only reason to have a camera would have been if it could sense and memorize where you are and auto set functions that way.

I also never see the point in a watch that you'd have to turn on to see the time. eInk displays make more sense here.

I wouldn't be surprised if apple leaked to the world that they were working on a watch (even had some people working on it) just to get other companies to make one, and apple won't ever release it. lol

Haha... I was thinking... hoping for the same thing! It's going to flop, even Apple's I believe won't stick. Apple must know this? They did file to get those patents for the flexible battery to go in the wrist strap though. It's just one more thing for thugs to steal from you and it will be flashing them in the face saying take me, my owner is a moron

Coming out with a watch is.

Coming out with a new device that isn't a watch but still is worn on your wrist is not.

Have to unlearn what you have learned.

Exactly the "iwatch" patent is for something else. Like at tv set top box or itv, who knows?

After reading all these threads it is safe to say, apple won't be putting out a iwatch like Samsungs. I'm sure it was to mislead and Samsung and they took the bait. Who really cares, if someone wants to shell out $299 on a device let them, it is their money.

I hoping the Iphone 6 with a larger screen comes out along with the 5C on the big date. Sick of waiting, otherwise it is the S4 for me.

It's funny how Samsung themselves are driving the Android fragmentation. I'm not talking about screen sizes or devices with old OS versions and such, but how they're bolting so many proprietary features into Android. Like Android's MDM specification. There's a whole raft of Samsung-specific extensions ("SAFE") that don't work on any other devices. Probably more than the stock-standard Android MDM spec (and most of SAFE's features are lifted from iOS). And again here with "S Voice". One could easily come to the conclusion that Samsung has designs on subsuming or supplanting Android. "Android S" or "Samsoid" or something.

You mean you are not texting, or otherwise staring at your phone, every waking minute? Must be a generational thing. ;)
I'm approaching geezer-hood and after wearing a watch for like a 100 years I cast mine off after I realized the time is displayed just about everywhere I look. (Or I just don't give a rat's arse what time it is.)

It's not worth my time to search thousands of posts to check if someone flip flopped. But we both know that by reading here daily that what I said is correct. Plastic went from garbage to good.

I don't know why you think to know what I know, but ok...

I find it quite normal that people who like the rumored products speak positively about them here, it might give you the impression that "Apple fanboys like any junk as long as an Apple logo is applied to it", but that's irrelevant.
I'm a good example for it - yesterday or so I wrote that the blue iPhone 5C looks good - now someone like you obviously would think "wow, Apple users like plastic phones, but they hated plastic before" , but I never did hate plastic before. So really it all goes down to either finding those "flip floppers" or just accepting that your theories about Apple fanboys liking anything with an Apple logo on it is extremely basic (aka primitive) generalizing.

Epic Fail.

This is exactly what everyone would say Samsung would come out with...basically an iPod Nano with limited features. And these features are pretty bad and horrible battery life and interface. Relying on 3rd party apps is also bad. Not shocking at all, this is what I expect from an 'engineering/tech spec' focused company and not a design/usability company like Apple.

They did this so they could beat Apple to market so they cannot be caught up in another lawsuit with Apple.

Whatever Apple comes out with will not be a smartphone on your wrist like this thing is.

It will be a new device that combines multiple things into something you won't want to leave home without. From NFC, health monitoring, connectivity and other features along with a design that doesn't look like a watch (I mean seriously, it was SOOOO obvious what Samsungs watch was going to look like).

In fact, Apple will probably not even use the term Watch. They will use something that relates to a wrist band/bracelet/or device always with you.

I also find it funny that people defending Samsung are saying things like "You don't know what Apple will come out with..they could have come out with something just like this" and I think the majority of us know that Apple would never come out with something like this epic fail of technology.

I was going to post the Joker meme "And here we gooooo..." to signal the start of the smart watch wars....but I mean seriously this thing is just so awful I think this is more appropriate of a look from the Joker.

Your post is wack! You seemed to have iWatch, or whatever Apple releases, figured out. It doesn't take a genius to know that the very idea of a smartwatch is a pathetic excuse to try and get the sheep to go out and spend more on junk that they don't need.

Why in the world would I need a smartwatch? Let me think this through properly
1. To tell the time?
Nah! My watch already performs this function well with acute accuracy

2. To tell the weather?
I have a smartphone. Watch do I need a watch for to do that?

3. To read emails?
Nah! My cell phone does a great job of that already.

4. To measure my heartbeat?
Nah! I don't care about that unless when I am talking to my hot wife or some random hot chick.

5. I have to recharge my iWatch..
WHAT?? I would need to now keep an eye on my smartwatch battery life? Nah! You can have it back.

A watch is a watch! There is not much else you can do with it because the screen itself is a major limiting factor. Apple is essentially going to re-brand ipod nano into a smartwatch. The very idea of a smartphone is going to be a fail irrespective of the manufacturer.

Yeah, scruff! Show me one time anyone here has ever said plastic was terrible and cheap!

Fanboy sellout hater astroturfers.

Please elaborate - where exactly did anyone state that "nobody ever said that 'Plastic was terrible and cheap'"? Thanks for your effort.

If Apple's 'watch' is anything like this in implementation or design, then I will not be interested.

It is bizarre to launch a watch whose battery life lasts "about a day". You need a watch all day and then some with heavy usage allowed for, or there is no point. It is not like a phone or laptop where you can just plug it into a power supply and accept that fact.

It need's to not look like this, not be so bulky and last for day's.

iWatch

I believe the iWatch trade mark registered by :apple: is actually for the TV product they are working on. The watch is a complete red herring and is designed to show the world who are the cribbers of the world.

This would be so funny and, would actually show the consumers and not the judges directly what copy cats do.

If and when Apple decides to release a "smart watch" I hope it won't act just like a secondary screen companion to a phone like the Gear is.

My wants:
1. Heart rate monitor
2. Pedometer
3. Bluetooth / NFC
4. Storage for music for workouts
5. Fluid UI

I hope the watch is geared more towards health awareness and fitness than a companion device to a phone....and it better not cost $300
