Are you sure about this? I thought most households were still running XP.

Windows 7 is in more houses these days. XP is mostly sticking around through businesses that can't upgrade due to one reason or another. It still controls a good 30% of the Windows market, though.

Windows 8 controls about 8% of that pie, and it did actually surpass all versions of OSX in pure numbers recently.

Microsoft listened to all those people who claimed that Apple would unify MacOS X and iOS, and worked hard to beat Apple to it, creating Windows 8.

...where do you get your news from, man? There's not a single thing in this statement that has a basis in reality.

Windows 8 sucks. I am sticking with 7 till 9 comes out just like I stuck with XP when vista came out.

Microsoft has never released a smartwatch. As far as I know Sony was first to market about 1.5 years go and pebble and few others beginning of this year. This year still marks the end of cycle 1 of smartwatches with Samsung coming in on the back end of that and Sony releasing the first GEN2 model. The mistake Samsung made is trying to cram too much stuff into a watch when technology couldn't yet make those things small or cheap enough. Over-ambition is a common mistake for Gen1 devices. Apple waits too long to release a product in any market to make these mistakes, but SOMEONE has to make them and actually release them for the whole market to learn what works and what doesn't.

Actually, when you look at a video of the Gear, it doesn't seem as huge as the picture. Although the OS is sluggish, that's software that will be updated within a few months.

Give it a few months then re-judge. Not that Apple fb's would listen to reason though. :)

Sony, or SonyEricsson was first and created the SmartWatch market 5/6yes ago, not 1.5yrs. This the SW2 wil be their 5 such device, ever evolving and offers 4 days runtime on one charge with continuous usage. It's also water resistant.

Samsung is getting a LOT of flack here for their 3rd SmartWatch, when their the first to make a phone in a watch (twice), not unlike a Dick Tracy watch. It lasted a few days if I recall, take a look at gsmarena to see the facts.

I do agree Samsung rushed to be "first" like a child. I cannot wait to buy Sony's SW2.

Three is nothing wrong relying on third party apps, as not only does it save on internally development costs and time, it creates and allows for an open market with better ideas of apps - not unlike the iPhone mist creative and forward thinking apps many of us don't use!!

One such app uses the BT connection range limitation and proximity to alert you if you're leaving your phone behind, and helps you find it by sounding an audible alarm on the phone, until you're less than 1ft away. A viewfinder for the phones camera and now also for their new QX10/100 camera accessories via the phones wifi connection to these. 3 way remote captures will be a lot of fun.

That looks pretty good but it sounds like it won't be much competition for Apple's watch (at least in this first iteration). This is what you get when you rush a product out just to try and be first.

One word/company Sony... (for this kind of smartwatch) So not first. If we are talking about having an LED Display.

I love this forum! Bashing a product that isn't even out yet.

In Car vs Wearable

I wouldn't be surprised if apple leaked to the world that they were working on a watch (even had some people working on it) just to get other companies to make one, and apple won't ever release it. lol

Totally... The in-car market is just ripe to be taken with a lot more money to be made, and Apple have already said they're on it. This watch crap is all a nice little distraction for their competitors.

However, Google also have a solid long-term plan for wearable tech which will unfold soon enough. If they were smart, they will wait for Apple's attempt to come out before releasing anything.

Anyhow... as others have said... a nice time for technology and the world.

Tbh, I'm totally not feeling the smart watch. It's nothing against the Gear, it's just that I'm not a fan of the smart watch idea. Doesn't matter if its made by Samsung, Apple, Google, or Microsoft. Just totally not feeling it.

I have been looking at all the current smart watch options right now, and none of them are doing anything for me. I truly feel like it is a technology accessory that I will never be able to buy. Right now I wear a Nixon. It's nothing special. It was around $200, which actually isn't a whole lot once you grow out of the Fossils, but I digress...

While the features we all agree will be seen in an ideal "iWatch" are awesome and actually useful (NFC, notifications, iPod control, even video), when I get right down to it I can't see myself wearing one. Mainly there are two reasons:

1.) I just can't see it being that stylish. Let's admit it, any watch can tell the time just as well as the other. We wear them as accessories. I work in a business world, and I consider my watch to be part of my "dressing up" for work everyday. I just can't see a smart-watch looking as good on my wrist as most high-end watches with good-ole-fashion minute and hour hands do. I was looking into the COOKO smart watch (http://www.hispotion.com/cookoo-smart-watch-9515), which still sticks to the design that I prefer, but a layout like that would be missing a lot of the cool features that we have began expecting of a smartwatch.

2.) Along the same lines as #1, if they ever do come up with a stylish yet feature loaded smart watch, everybody will have one. This is already the case with iPhones right now, but communication devices aren't quite "expressions of one's self" as much as watches are. Anyone who has ever invested in a nice watch knows that they don't want to get to work or class or whatever and see that most the other people wearing watches have the same one.

I agree that the one-day battery is a deal breaker on a watch. But for the idea of smart watches in general - I like being able to glance at my watch rather than pulling my phone out of my pocket. It is convenient and less obtrusive and more acceptable in situations where pulling out the phone seems impolite - meetings, social situations, etc... As you even say, if I want to know the time I glance at my watch. At least with my Pebble that is how I use it - at a glance info. It vibrates 15 minutes before meetings, shows text messages, displays my Runkeeper stats while running and allows me to change music without pulling my phone out while running. I understand they are not for everyone but I don't understand the theme of - don't buy it, just use your phone for all that - if you want to pull your phone out all the time, feel free. It nice to have all those features on a phone I just find it awkward to pull it out of my pocket all the time for even basic information.

I actually like the pebble watch. It makes much more sense than samsung's crack at the smart watch here. Also, you brought up good points about being in situations where pulling your phone out isn't acceptable.

In my opinion, smartwatches need to be more like iPod Nano previous gen.
Believe me, they will be betterly designed like that, and maybe less expensive in price and design problems

Too bad this will only woth with their latest phone which they did at launch.

Many people may also want to have used with ith their S4's too.

Take that Apple :p. While They were always been "rumored" about an Apple Smart-Watch, Samsung actually bought ome to the table. ;).

If the rumours are true, apple were meant o release around now, but were unhappy with battery life, so delayed.

What's better, coming first with a shockingly bad product that is almost universally slated, or delaying and coming out with a quality product?

Okay, I was defending the Gear's innocuous design until I saw this picture:

delays is ok, but the length of time will matter.

Personally, we're coming up with wacky ideas about to take photos, but the above attachment takes the cake.

Epic Fail.

This is exactly what everyone would say Samsung would come out with...basically an iPod Nano with limited features. And these features are pretty bad and horrible battery life and interface. Relying on 3rd party apps is also bad. Not shocking at all, this is what I expect from an 'engineering/tech spec' focused company and not a design/usability company like Apple.

They did this so they could beat Apple to market so they cannot be caught up in another lawsuit with Apple.

Whatever Apple comes out with will not be a smartphone on your wrist like this thing is.

It will be a new device that combines multiple things into something you won't want to leave home without. From NFC, health monitoring, connectivity and other features along with a design that doesn't look like a watch (I mean seriously, it was SOOOO obvious what Samsungs watch was going to look like).

In fact, Apple will probably not even use the term Watch. They will use something that relates to a wrist band/bracelet/or device always with you.

I also find it funny that people defending Samsung are saying things like "You don't know what Apple will come out with..they could have come out with something just like this" and I think the majority of us know that Apple would never come out with something like this epic fail of technology.

I was going to post the Joker meme "And here we gooooo..." to signal the start of the smart watch wars....but I mean seriously this thing is just so awful I think this is more appropriate of a look from the Joker.

Okay, I was defending the Gear's innocuous design until I saw this picture:

Not defending the overall style, but...

A wrist camera is useful with the journaling software to keep a personal diary, or for real estate agents, field reps, etc.

In enterprise apps, we'd likely use it for barcode scanning.

I think it's made deliberately obvious, so others can tell it's a camera. Everyone's so concerned about Google Glass and such.

No iWatch : Samsung Galaxy Gear Wins [Forefeit Rule].

No Matter the Galaxy Gear its an Crap, Its the Best SmartWach today (btw I'll dont purchase it with my new Galaxy Note 3).

And about the iPhone 5S novelities:

  1. 64Bits:
    • Only Mandatory to handle 4GB+ of ram (unlikely to see on iOS devices until... 2020...).
    • Apps wanting to take on performance improvements needs to be rewrittern (despite thus "so quick"still needs to be rewited, recompliled and re-submitted to iTunes).
    • Android's Snapdragon 800 on Note 3 and Galaxy S4 actually much faster tan A7, requires no rewritten apps to deliver full performance, while we could see an 64 bits cpu on next gen Android devices (mandatory coz will run on 4+gb ram) it actually will justify the 64Bit jump.
  2. Fingerprint Sensor:
    • Already from 2011 on Motorola Atrix Line (and much earlier on some WinCE devices).
    • while I suppor it adoption doesnt drive big interest on customers, neither is an sales deal breaker.
    • Actually FPS are not as safer as an strong password, are close to face unlock on androids.
  3. Motion m7 sensor and Motion API:
it was the really very good news, may look something useless, but this solution open ups a new world of possibilities on AIR GESTURES and GAME CONTROL, will be a new STD for some developers, I hope to see it on the new iPads. KEEP TRACK ON IT
