The only reason it's is front page is because it's Samsung and will generate page views. Same thing will happen tomorrow when the new Galaxy is announced, because MR knows that thread will be flamewar heaven and easily get 500+ posts.

The coverage is relevant due to Samsung's ongoing relationship with Apple, in terms of patent disagreements, and real competition in the mobile sphere.

I don't see any smartwatch there.

Oh it was a joke. Don't be too literal.

Oh it was a joke. Don't be too literal.

There were other, better jokes already made in this thread, yours wasn't even remotely amusing...,

No, it's not pretty obvious at all: it's pretty obvious that health monitoring in smartwatches was an interesting idea long before Apple's rumors got wind: that's most likely Why Apple itself hired experts in that field in the first place.

Or more rudely said, it's pretty obvious that Apple is obsessively chasing after ideas which are already decedes' old and which have been or are being already implemented in actual products by at least half a dozen other companies. Some of these products most likely predate Apple's rumors too.

Samsung is not chasing Apple, is following the trend of smartwatches in general. This trend predates Apple's rumors and most likely "inspired" Apple to go in that direction too.

You're really in some kind of denial.... We get a heavy load of talk that apple are looking to do health related stuff for its watch, then Samsungs new Gear has some health related stuff. It correlates. Unless you can show me links to any info that Samsung were planning this for the Gear 2 from before the talk of Apple doing it, your point is hardly valid.

Once Samsung deploys Tizen on their galaxy phones, it would funny if Google sues them for infringement.

Wow, only 5 months after Gear 1!

That's exactly my reaction - 5 months and already a $299 purchase is rendered significantly less in value. Imagine the v1 was a holiday gift, it's now old news, and probably they'll release at least one new version before the holidays again, meaning your gift would be 2 versions behind the latest.

Gotta love those companies that release so often - makes you wonder why people buy them at all when a new version is just around the corner. Wouldn't it be more prudent just to wait a few months until a better version came along?

To me this quick release of the Gear 2 confirms that Samsung is responding to what Apple might release.

The Gear 2 must have been nearing production when the original Gear was rushed out to counter a possible Apple iWatch.

Just more of a reason to avoid this. The Gear 3 is probably nearly ready for production. Feels like Samsung is just throwing a bunch of cr*p at the wall to see what will stick.

It needs to look good before it becomes acceptable as a wearable piece of tech. This is not.

Fully agree. And that'll go for whatever Apple delivers too. I pray it looks nothing like a Nano converted to a watch.

I don't see the groups of people I associate with fit the market for this type of product, but we will see. I don't wear a watch and what the rumors indicate it won't even come close to make me want to replace my Polar with it.

Stop trying to piss off Mac people.
Pissing off you doesn't mean "pissing off Mac people". You might actually believe that your opinion is shared among the whole Mac population, but that's not the case, also because I'm part of "Mac people" too: I own a rMBP 15", a iPhone 4S and iPad Air (and no Android at all).

Nobody is saying that Apple invented anything or even that the products have not been around for a while.
The poster I was replying to begs to differ since he was talking about "chasing after Apples feet".

The race to the top is to see who does it better. The wheel has been around for quite a while now yet it doesn't stop tire companies from introducing new designs, treads every year after they figure out what works or an improvement. There were portable music played around for decades... The iPad topped them all. Thats just life. Since you hate apple so much, go troll an android forum.
That's exactly my point: that's where you will be able to talk about "chasing after Apple": if and when Apple releases a killer smartwatch and others start to copy its specific implementation.

5 months and a new OS to boot, oh and something that is compatible with more devices than its predecessor. And Apple's the one that gets dinged for obsolescence? Clearly the 1st gen Gear was rushed to market so Samsung could claim first (at least amongst the big boys like Apple and Google). What was the point of releasing what they did last fall other than an obsession with making sure they had a "smart watch" on the market before Apple? Same thing with this Galaxy Note Pro that has received meh reviews from sites like Engadget and the Verge. Being first doesn't matter if the product isn't great.

Like many companies around the world at least they are trying to offer consumers items they may wish to purchase if they feel they would like them.

I fail to see what is so horrific with this as a concept.

Perhaps you would like to see one car for sale, on brand of food, one normal watch, one bath soap?

At least, like millions of other companies all around the world they are actually bringing items out for sale, and offering them to people who may like them.

Sure, you personally don't like them, fueled unfortunately be some ANTI SAMSUNG brainwashing that's only fit for the school playground.

Do you do into furniture stores and tell people that brand of furniture is rubbish, or they they have bought the wrong car, of they clothing is the wrong brand?

What you don't like, matters only to one person on this planet... YOU

To not like something simply down to what logo is stamped on the side is even sadder. I can assure you, without ANY question, if this was made by Apple, exactly the same product, that just worked with iPhones, you would have a totally different opinion of the product.

I won't be buying one. I can't see mysef buying an Apple one also.

But at least Samsung are offering something for sale.

And why we have Samsung stories, Flappy bird stories and other stories, here, because sadly there is no Apple news.

Personally, I, and I'm sure others would like the now lumbering monolith Apple has become to try some ideas out for sale, and not just take the safe, lets tweek what we have and take no risks approach they have these days.

It will be their long term undoing if they don't get some fresh, new exciting life into them, and just stick with same old same old, but we have made it a bit better this year, and if you hold the last 3 years versions side by side you should just be able to see some difference.

That's not what I, and I guess others are looking for, from one of the top worlds companies.

Whatever shape it will be, is not gonna stop Samy to copy the ***** out of it.

Serious question. How do you make phone calls on something that size (if you do)? Or you use Bluetooth paired earpiece?

i can hold it just fine
rather have an iphone, but i like to read books and its the size of a paperback

Wow, projecting much? I never said any of these things.

But here in reality the Gear didn't set the world on fire. It was ill-conceived and essentially unfinished. And given the quick release of the Gear 2, Samsung probably knew this when it released the original Gear. I don't like being a beta tester with expensive hardware for any company, including Apple.

Fair enough! Me to would like a larger screen iPhone but I wouldn't want anything that goes over 5"! I have seen some of these galaxy notes but mostly I have seen people consuming media on them or surfing the web! They do look nice but for my taste that would be really to large to hold it on a traditional style for audio calls.

Any Gear 1 owners?

Surprising not to see any "So this is how they treat their loyal early adopters - I should be given the chance to upgrade to the new one for 10¢" type thread. No one must have bought the original.

Many Mk1 products are testing the water.

It's often the case that Mk1 is released with as much R&D as you dare put into it, the public get it, and all the in use faults can show up, you get a lot of feedback normally from a 1st try release and a lot can happen between mk1 and mk2

mk3 tends to often be more a polish.

It's a hard balance. You don't really want to release something totally unfinished of course, but then again you don't want to spend billions and put the whole company to work on it, to find out the public don't really want it.

Apple have the VERY lucky position of, sorry to use the term, fanboys, so they know and are int he luxurious position at the moment of knowing anything they make will sell enough irrespective of it it does turn out to be a flop long term.

Again, in a way I would prefer a company did, to some extent try things and see what works. It's how we got where we are today in the PC and Mac world. Both sides of the fence were trying things, esp with graphics cards for PC's over the past 2 decades with companies trying new ideas to try and out do each other.

Things have stagnated into the safe and steady state at the moment, esp with Apple and that's sad.

Tim Cook has promised EXCITING NEW THINGS for this year, so lets see shall we. a tweaked iPad, iPhone, iMac and mac book, in my mind is not EXCITING

Amazing how fast Samsung cranks out the number of products. Have to wonder where the compromise is?

Have to wonder? It's right there staring at us. The entire design is compromise. I'm not bashing Samsung here. It's just a tough concept to perfect - decent battery life, good functionality, & desirable design.

News is the S/W and not the H/W

I believe this is the first *high visibility*, commercially meaningful *global* H/W product running Tizen.

Understandable that Samsung is continuing to attempt to gain control over the S/W side of their products - to be more like Apple.

The bad news: (1) Samsung has historically been *very* week on S/W and UI. There is no indication whatsoever that this has changed - e.g., no new outside hires at the highest level to drive S/W or UI, etc.

(2) Tizen is positioned as an open source project. Any open source initiative led by Samsung will fail. Samsung is used to railroading smaller developers in its home market (i.e., Korea), and does not understand what it takes to build a community or an ecosystem. The internal organizational state of Tizen reflects this - Tizen is described as open source, but the licensing model is a mess and the OS includes many components from Samsung that is not fully open source. (... To make things worse, many say that Samsung has a history of attempting to abuse FRAND patents).

Why would anyone go on a ship with a captain who will have no problem kicking you off to make more berth room for himself?... Especially if you are supposed to man the oars as well?

More competition is always good, but I bet Tizen will end up with Bada - nowhere.
